    Hey Skip, love the videos. I am a low-hours pilot (Grob aerobatic trainer, plus microlight, plus paraglider) and I love your videos. In particular I am using the VOR stuff because doing all of the introductory learning saves expensive air hours, and when you do it in a real plane then the foundation is already there. Thanks.

    Hi Skip.
    This is an extremely detailed explanation of how everything works--it's wonderful for people like me! When I view other people's explanation for things they suppose we already know things and so their explanation always leaves questions. Yours is very thorough! Just one thing, just for FYI, when you refer to the V O R, this is individually spoken as Vee--Oh--Are! But excellent video!

      Hi Michael, Thanks so much, glad the video helped. The V O R thing just happened for some reason. I don't know why I said it the way I did I know better just came out that way, easier to say I guess. To make it worse I did this in several other videos so be prepared for more of the same if you watch other videos :-)

    Excellent topic, we are always after small adjustments and customisations. Thanks. How different is it when dealing with 3D panels?
    One suggestion too: any chance for a good tutorial like this one but on the world editor, such as adding missing wind socks in our local airports etc...

      superfrogbe Hi superfrogbe, Actually the changes you make on the 2D panel will also show up on the 3D panel, most of the time. As technology changes airplane design for sims change also so I don't know how long we will be able to play around with the panels unless they come up with a new version of Plane Maker. If you have used OverlayEditor or WED it's pretty easy to add objects, the trouble is finding the objects you want to add. How much experience do you have with WED? Blessings, Skip

    This was very helpful, thanks Skip. I've only had x-plane 10 for 2 weeks, so I'm a newbie. I started with FS1 over 20 years ago and just retired FSX for compatibility issues with Windows 8.1. I really enjoy tinkering with the planes.
    Do you plan on producing another video (part 2) about adding new controls and switches? The original Cessna 172SP (XP10) does not seem to have the ability to switch to the Nav 2 radio even though both radios are on the panel.

      chuck poole Hi Chuck, welcome to the x plane world :-). I too started with Microsoft's very first "stick figure" simulator, ran it on an Amiga 1000 in the late 80s. Then went to Falcon 3.0. then 4.0. Switched to Windows in the 90s (I think that's how it went, memory is slipping with my old age) stayed with MS Flight Sim till they abandon us. Started using X Plane with version 10. As X Plane keeps improving I'm very happy with the change. There are a few things I miss. I'd love to be able to open different windows for different views. One great thing about X Plane is you can have several copies in different locations and they will all run fine. Just copy & paste entire folder to a different location and off you go. It's a good idea to install a new update to a new folder and make sure it runs properly. If there is a problem then you still have your old version to fly till you get the new one working.Didn't mean to rant on like that, sorry. Your question about adding switches etc. it is just like in the video, find the switch or control in the left panel where the instruments live and drag it to the panel. If you can't find a switch open an airplane that has a switch you want and copy paste it onto the other airplane panel. The X Plane 172SP seems to have several things missing as you mentioned and it needs a lot of modifying to get the right look in my opinion. Plane Maker has everything you are looking for, all the switches etc. to fix the 172SP so if you want to use that 172SP you should have no trouble getting it the way you want. The Cessna 172SP that come with X Plane is OK but if you plan to fly a Cessna a lot then find a better one to purchase. Try x-hanger.com that's where I got my 172N, only $14.95 and my Cessna Caravan 208B. The 172N is the airplane I use in most of my videos but I made lots of changes to it so you will not find my instrument panel. Let me know how you make out. Blessings, Skip

      I purchased the 172N and it was well worth it. I took the Nav1/2/GPS switch from the '172N' and copied it to the '172SP' and it works fine now. Lots to get used to, but I'm up for the challenge. Yours are the best collection of x-plane videos out there. My buddy who is a 'simmer' and ex pilot enjoys your videos as well. Be blessed! Chuck

      Hi Barry, Thanks glad you enjoyed the videos. As for the instrument could you be a bit more specific as to the one's you don't know and I'll see what I can do.
      I know Plane Maker is a bit confusing when trying to locate instruments. You might try looking at other airplanes with the instruments you want then open that airplane in PM and copy/paste the instrument into your airplane. Just click on the instrument so it's highlighted I believe you can use Ctrl C and Ctrl V in windows, not sure about Mac. or use the copy/paste icons then open your airplane and click on a spot on the panel where you want the instrument then paste. let me know how you make out.

      the Garman is the 430.pmg same as in the 172SF. But, when i click on it to open it larger on the screen, nothing happens. I've copied and pasted from the 172sf in xplane and still the screen does not enlarge the 430. Yikes! I love the handling of the 172n.. great plane.

      @WEHVideos  7 лет назад

      Hi Barry, Yea, I really like the 172N. I don't think the 430 in Plane Maker is the same one you are trying to copy, the sizeable one probably won't work in 172N it need the programming code to go with it I'd guess but not sure.
      If it just the size you are concerned about you can resize the one in the 172N. There is a place on the bottom of the screen where you can change the size of each instrument. I moved some instruments down on one airplane panel and made the GPS larger so I could read it better. Sorry I'm not much help here.

    Probably we're both puzzling out the significantly tougher question of how to do this in 3D nowadays. I actually think an "Easy 3D Cockpit dials" plugin/addon would be a great third party add on to develop if someone is looking for a great opening in the XPlane tools market.

      Hi John, Sorry I don't do email. i did that for a while but it didn't go well so, if you don't mind please go ahead and put your questions here in comments. One thing you should know is this video was done in XP10 and many of the new airplanes developed now do not use the 2D panel so you will not be able to edit the panels in those airplanes. You can check to see if your airplane uses 2D by opening the airplane in PM and check to see if there are any instruments visible (you may have to click on the top of the panel and raise it up to see things) if not then you are out of luck. You still can change viewpoints etc. though.

I am unable to get this AP to fly my flight plan at all and wanted to replace the AP with the STEC AP the Cessna uses. I checked out your Plane Maker vids and I am unable to see any panels at all when I follow your directions. I am using XPlane 11's latest version though. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I appreciate your videos. But being that I just now am looking to change saw the tail number, that your dated videos are no longer useful. I tried to do something as easy as change the tail number and once I do and save, the new number will not show up. Plus the 2D panel no longer appears for like the Baron which is what I'm trying to play with. 3.0 released a new version for Autopilot. I thought I would take something like the "KAP-140 dual axis with alt pre-selector" and replace that with the one the Baron has. This way I could have altitude and VS control. But that didn't work either. Your very talented, and I personally hope you make some new videos of the new plane maker. Thanks for you community work. Dave

The reason why is because I use air manager in one monitor to put all my instruments and the monitor above will have the view. People use three monitors to have 180 degree view but takes a lot from your video card. Having only one monitor for the view in panoramic only but capable for head tracking will be a good tool to have. Any idea? Thank you

    Hi, I LOVE your videos! I’m trying to redo my Cessna 172 instrument panel however, I can only access the left side of the panel. I don’t have room for the radio stack section or co-pilot section of the panel. Or in other words, those two sections are not there. Do you have any recommendations?

    • @WEHVideos
      @WEHVideos  4 года назад

      Hi Ryan, I'm not an expert in Plane Maker but if you have an airplane that uses the 2D panel you should be able to add instruments to both sides, however, this depends on the airplane you are working on and the version of XP. Many, if not all, XP11 airplanes don't use the 2D panel anymore so you can't make modifications at all. So what version of the 172 are you using and did it come with XP or did you purchase it?

It's probably as close to what you want I'm sorry to say but you can change the panels in Plane Maker. The difference between the 172SP and 172N is basically the engine. The SP has a 180Php fuel injected engine the N 160hp with a carburetor not fuel injection.

    Hey Skip, any suggestions on improving the landing/taxi lighting on the Cirrus Jet with Plane Maker? All of my experiments are not yielding any better improvements. I've reviewed other aircraft and I've been able to add a nose wheel light, an addition from the two wing mounted lights, but the illumination of the runway at night is still eluding me.

    • @WEHVideos
      @WEHVideos  8 лет назад

      Hi Tom, OK I played around in Plane Maker with the lights. The Cirrus only has landing lights which are not very useful for taxing I found out. I went to "Viewpoints" "Ext Lights" in PM and added a couple taxi lights to the airplane and they made it much easier to see while taxing. So go to "Viewpoints" Ext Lights" and click the "Add" button at the bottom of the page this adds an external light that you can make a landing light, taxi light or what ever you want by using a drop down option. Then just play around with placing the lights by messing with the numbers and have some fun. I know this messing with the real design of the airplane but you do need to see where you are going at night right. Let me know if this helped.

      +WEH Videos Hey Skip, I've been there, added a nose wheel light but it's the "messing with the numbers" part that I'm having trouble with. Which numbers are you changing? I get the first set, the long, lateral, vertical; those are the "where on the plane are the lights" numbers. The heading (which way does it point) and pitch (does it point up or down); heading is 000 for straight ahead; which pitch did you use? Length and width, is that how far out the beam of light is and how wide is the beam? Again, what did you use? I extended the length out from the original 91 feet to 300 and the width from 09 to 40 with not much improvement. I'm assuming that the RGB remains at 1.00 for a white light? Be interested to know what you used. I've tried copying other plane settings too and not having much luck. Thanks, I appreciate the assistance.

    • @WEHVideos
      @WEHVideos  8 лет назад

      Hi Tom, All I did was made sure I added taxi lights. I added two to the nose of the airplane and it looked all right. I use 191 for length and I think 19 for width. Probably should have gone wider. If you look at the airplane diagram on the right in PM you see lines coming from the lights, change the numbers and the lines will show you the changes you made. The numbers on the far right are length and width of the light beam. Don't know what else to say except make sure you are adding taxi lights and, maybe add even more taxi lights to get what you want???? Let me know how you make out.

Wait a minute, I just clicked on Special and selected Wireframe Textures; is that the view you're talking about? It appears that there are a couple of "beams" or lines projecting forward from the wings where the lights are positioned.

    Thanks for a great video. I followed all of your steps to modify the instrument panel but then when I loaded the plane it shows the panel to be completely black. I tried this with multiple planes and got this same result each time. When I went back and loaded the original planes everything was normal. What would cause my panels to be black after doing these modifications?

      WEH Videos Hi Skip, Sorry for the delay. I don't know the exact version/build number I am running but I can tell you I installed X Plane about 30 days ago and ran all the auto updates and also downloaded all of the Regional scenery updates. I have attempted to modify the 2D panels of several planes; Cessna 172 and Cirrus Jet. I deleted a couple instruments on the the 2D panels and added a few things. My main interest was in adding the elevator trim indicator. I selected and added the small vertical rectangle elevator trim indicator. I saved my work and then launced X plane and selected the modified plane. The plane loaded and displayed a completly blacked-out panel. This happened on both planes. * Next I loaded the original/unmodified planes and the panels looked fine. I then went back plane maker and opened and the original plane file, i made zero changes and did a 'Save As" with a new name. I opened the new plane and again... blacked -out panel. Any suggestions??

      Hi bobbuckfield3790, Before you try to make changes make a backup of the complete folder so if something goes wrong you can start over.
      You should be able to open this airplane in XP plane maker 11 and 12 so I don't know why you are having a problem. What file are you opening? You need to open a .acf file and you should see several .acf files all starting with 172N_xxx.ACF, do not try and open the files with the "~" thing at the end of the name these are backup flies.
      This may sound crazy but did you unzip the folder and place it in XP11/Aircraft folder. It doesn't matter where you put the airplane as long as it's in XP Aircraft folder. You can make a new folder to place it in, I have a folder in the Aircraft folder called Free where I put all the aircraft I download. Doubt this will help with the problem but sometimes it's not a bad idea to start over.
      Let me know how it goes!

      I know what you mean, I've moved a lot of instruments when I could to get things where I didn't need to scroll around the cockpit looking. Another option is purchasing 3rd party software like Panel Builder or Air Manager. You use these to make complete panels for a second monitor. Hi Ian, This video was made for X Plane 10 Plane Maker and a lot has changed since then with many developers no longer using the 2D panel. While this is not a bad thing since we get much better airplanes we loose the ability to make panel modifications. There are many airplanes that still use the 2D panel and you can modify them but I believe all the airplanes that come with X Plane 11 no longer use the 2D panel so you are not able to make changes. I keep hoping that a future release of Plane Maker will make it possible to modify panels but doubt that will happen, sorry.

This will work but with limited success. First the airplane with the panel you want needs to use the 2D panel so you can copy. You might need to do some tweaking to get it to look right. I'd just add a couple instruments and then test to make sure they work before spending a lot of time on this. Other than that I don't know of any other way, good luck let me know if you try this and how it worked.
