A guy from Duncan came to the variety store in town and showed us all kinds of tricks. He had a special blade on his pocketknife and carved our initials in our wooden yo-yo's. If you bought a Duncan when he was there, he'd give you a new model called 'The Butterfly'. This was 1961 in the S.F. East Bay. We boys were in 7th heaven for the next few weeks. I wore out a lot of Band Aids on the middle finger of my right hand because that string would cut a groove in your finger in no time. A kid in my class stood up and did the 'around the world' trick when the teacher had her back turned and was writing on the blackboard. The string broke and the yo-yo rocketed to the blackboard and shattered. It missed Mrs. Raby by inches. Bill was sent to the office. Good times in 6th grade.
I remember that Butterfly model but I never got it. My Duncan yo-yo was blue and red and I just mastered throwing it down and having it come back to me. That’s it.
I won a CHERIO brand yo yo contest back in the early 1950 at a Woolworths store in Chicago. We kids also played with TOPS and marbles back then. The good old days..
1961 or 1962 based on the narration @7:55. I remember seeing this film (or one awfully similar) broadcast on Sacramento TV about that time. I got my parents to buy me a Duncan yo-yo, but I never had the patience or skill to use mine like these folks use theirs.
I never could get it to spin (sleep) long enough to do such tricks. Were the ones seen on TV (and in this film) not the same as the ones you could buy at the local toy store?
It shows that no matter how genocidal you may be that you are never too old to be young at heart and enjoy the hours of fun that only a DUCAN yo-yo can provide. Whether your a Goebbels or a Goering or even an Adolph there is a DUNCAN just for you !
This really sucks as an instructional film, most of it consists of watching these guys show off how great they are. The most important thing that was left out was the proper way to attach the string and how to get the correct tension in the loop on the yo-yo spindle.
Where i live. thousands of miles from the USA the same, believe me, the same publicity was made with an infamous plastic yo-yo called the "Russell yo-yo". It was made in the country but supposedly came from the US and had some qualities that justified a veeeeery high price ...children died for one, some of them were used as bludgeons from time to time ... nice times.

You don’t know how badly I wanted to do all those yo-yo tricks!!! They made it look so easy!!

Wonderful memories, thanks.
I use to have Yo-Yo-'s when i was a kid in the 70's.
Times have changed....
If it isn't Duncan, it isn't yo-yo! The Duncan Imperial was top of the line--it cost a buck around 1962.
There was an actual demonstration at my elementary school. Within days, almost everyone bought a yo-yo.
You posted the show was late 1950's, but at 7:53, it states it was 1962 when this show aired.
"You can't think the YoYo. You have to BE the YoYo!"
✌🎅👍
Duncan Yo-Yo using the Monty Python theme song?!? 😝😝😝😝😝 😆😆😆😆😆 😁😁😁😁😁

Seems to come back every other generation
At a time when $5,000 could pay for most of your undergraduate education too.
Im so confused by the hilter scene at the beginning
Yes that is very strange to see ??
Hitler invented the Yo Yo

If you gave this to a kid today they would look for the power switch.😂🙄 Kids today just don't have a freakin clue. I'm so glad I grew up when I did.
