  • Night Walk into Hell Downtown Los Angeles Homeless Encampments Skid Row lets walk on a busy Friday night on skid row. Very busy party atmosphere downtown and everyone is sociable but when midnight comes its survival of the fittest. The weather is still quite cold, so a lot of folks seek Shelter off the streets on nights like this.
In the heart of **Los Angeles**, there exists a place known as **Skid Row**, a neighborhood that grapples with a complex web of challenges. Let me shed some light on this area:
    **Drug Epidemic**:
    - Skid Row has become a **haven for addiction**. Residents describe it as a "Disneyland for addicts." Various drugs are prevalent:
    - *Heroin*
    - *Fentanyl*
    - *Crack*
    - *Weed*
    - *Crystal meth*
    - Crystal meth, brought in by Mexican cartels and distributed by local gangs in **five-dollar bags**, is rapidly overtaking crack as the drug of choice. The battle between "Chris" (crystal meth) and "Crack" rages on.
    - Substance abuse is no longer discreet. People openly smoke meth and crack using glass pipes. On Fifth Street, near the needle exchange, individuals inject **speedballs**-a mix of heroin and crystal meth-right on the pavement.
    - Mental illness is rampant, with half-naked individuals screaming, talking to the air, and defecating in public. Despite the crisis, policymakers seem fixated on building luxurious apartments, while shelters remain insufficient².
    1. **Homelessness Crisis**:
    - Los Angeles faces an unprecedented humanitarian crisis due to a combination of factors: *Covid**, soaring property prices, and illegal immigration. Approximately **70,000 people* now live on the streets, seeking refuge in freeway exits, bridges, parks, and vacant lots. Even the affluent Venice Beach area has witnessed the emergence of a tent city.
    - However, the epicenter of this crisis remains **Skid Row**, a traditional neighborhood for the downtrodden in downtown Los Angeles. In the past, many could find shelter in cheap hotels and flophouses. Today, thousands endure squalid conditions on the streets.
    - The homeless population in Skid Row is currently estimated at *8,000**, a significant increase from two decades ago when most of them lived within a 20-block area. Now, nearly **60 city blocks* are occupied by tents and makeshift structures.
    3. **Challenges Persist**:
    - Andrew Bales, head of the United Rescue Mission, emphasizes that while shelters are not ideal, the priority should be getting people off the streets. Only *800 out of 10,000 needed units* have been delivered in recent years. Building expensive apartments alone won't solve the crisis².
Skid Row's story is one of struggle, addiction, and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions. The city grapples with the complexities of homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health, while the streets continue to bear witness to human suffering²³⁴.

There are a lot of beautiful cities in Russia that are hidden from commentators on RUclips. And of course, in the largest country there will be problem areas, but here the only problem is the size. It is very difficult to maintain such territories when the economy is just developing. But what is the problem of America, why are there specifically garbage and marginal cities, if there have been no major wars and crises in the country? America should be ashamed that it calls itself number one, but in fact we are looking at these shameful walks.

i remember reagan getting pummeled by the dems for resisting opening up the asylums. this goes back to his first term. it was 82 or 83. the dems wanted to do away with isolating the mental cases. warehousing was the term the dems used. reagan resisted and finally gave up. and now they walk amongst us.

We all think we have problems but this puts them into perspective. It appears that the homeless problem here in LA has now grown too big for any one person or organisation to tackle it. I'm sure there are lots of organisations working hard to help these people at a basic level like providing food, medicine and clothing but its just treading water and meanwhile the task is getting bigger and harder by the day. Wish I knew the answer.

Man. What a mess. Its hard to believe this has been going on since after the civil war. In 1880 the place where hobo's used to congregate called "Hobo Corner" is where it first started. It was named that because alot of the homeless would ride the railway out to California and hobo corner was a few blocks from the train station. In 1920 they moved east a little ways to a spot called "Hell's half acre" which is now skid row. Very, very awful and shameful how long this has been going on. Theres nothing like seeing it in person.
