My aunt gave me both those books, among others, when I was 13. Same hardcovers, jacket art and all. I think I've read TSML about a dozen times over the last two decades. Clovis is my favorite as well. I hate Egyptia and the twins. Jane can be annoying, but I still love the story. There's a book 2 if your interested. It's called "Metallic Love."

Magdala also immediately trusts the woman she was cloned from, just because they look alike, and while I get where the author was going with it (you love yourself more than anyone else, we're all narcissists, you'd do anything to protect yourself, etc.), it was also kind of ridiculous. wouldn't seeing another of yourself feel somehow... wrong?? 😂 idk. anyway, I digress
You know, I generally don't go for the sci-fi future vibes if I'm picking something out for myself but both of these sound pretty great. I think I like musing the more....domestic concepts of the future than the big developments. Like "Rich guy wants to experiment with consciousness? Okay." but then you mentioned robots walking around playing music and futuristic tape decks and I got excited XD
I'm a big old Tanith Lee fan but I'm really glad to hear your honest opinion about Electric Forest... It was on my tbr but is no longer. Eew. I love that you brought up the misplaced ending of The Silver Metal Lover and how it might have something to do with reincarnation... All I'll say is I there's a second book. So if you like it enough you might want to pick up Metallic Love and it might tie it together more. (and there's more of the inaccurate futuristic stuff in it which I also LOVE) Loved your reviews!

Wow the rich dude is an asshole? That wasn’t very surprising and I already hate it and I hadn’t ever heard of that book. The Silver Metal Lover sounds like something I’d like with the robot-humanity themes too! I immediately went to goodreads and all the variant covers are bad! Lol
lol true, very predictable. but also fitting considering he's also "ugly" too and people often attack their own weaknesses in other people 🤔 thought that was a nice little commentary. ohh yeah, it gets worse! lol I think I prefer the hippie cover 😂
