Boiling coffee in a pan is what I've always heard called "cowboy coffee" or "camp coffee".

Yep. Very familiar with cowboy coffee. The experiment tyat I did is somewhat different because I boiled the finished coffee. I think a percolator is a home version of cowboy coffee. But I’m sure there is a slight differences in taste.

@@everyday-beans It seemed to me that you were test boiling different ground coffee to water concentrations. Thanks for clarifying.

@@mrcdad Np. Yeah. I can understand how it can be confusing. Hell, I can test so many things with coffee and I am sure we can learn something from it. But yes, this was a big eye opener of how some coffee to water concentrations can actually get better with the boiling aspect. Do you have any recipes, experiments you would like me to try next?

i wonder if bringing the water to a boil before adding the coffee would make much difference

I think it would make a difference, but not sure on the significance. I think it will allow the coffee to perhaps not be so over extracted by doing it the other way.
