- The new airport for Mexico city promises to be ‘unlike anything in the world.’ A celebration of space and light, it represents a revolution in airport terminal design. Building on ideas pioneered at Stansted and subsequent airports in Hong Kong and Beijing, Mexico City airport will be amongst the largest and most sustainable in the world. The new airport is the outcome of a collaboration between Foster + Partners and Fernando Romero Enterprise. Its continuous gridshell structure - a singular enclosure evocative of flight - draws on rich local symbolism and innovative structural design to form a soaring, spectacular gateway to Mexico.

This is a beautiful project by one of the greatest architects alive, Norman Foster and his studio in London, in collaboration with much younger Mexican partners. 46 years old Fernando Romero has been part of different teams responsible for interesting buildings like the Soumaya Museum in Mexico City or the Casa da Musica in Porto, Portugal but, sorry, I haven't seen any of his personal designs and Wikipedia does not help him much when it begins its entry by saying that Romero "is the son-in-law of Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim".
In my opinion, the video explains clearly -but too briefly- the project, mentioning in passing the challenges of the difficult soft terrain where the airport will be built, in a part of the world prone to earthquakes. The BIG problem with this video is that THERE IS NO SPANISH VERSION!! This is a BIG BIG OMISSION. What were you thinking, guys? @foster+partenrs: this is not the first time you build an airport in a country where English is not the official language. As you are building in Mexico City, how about having the courtesy of addressing Mexicans in their own language?
Many of us in Mexico speak English but, come on! This is not only a PR faux pas, it is a wasted opportunity, as simply putting Spanish subtitles in all your videos and interviews about the airport in CDMX would make them of great interest to a wider public and would help clarify concepts, for example, many Mexicans haven't heard about the 'floating' structures that you conceived for this huge airport, the explanation of this clever solution in the video is easy to understand. It is a shame, really, because the inhabitants of Mexico City know that heavy buildings, like the Bellas Artes palace, which has sunk several meters into the soft soil during the almost a century since it was built. Maybe you haven't realised this, dear @foster+partenrs, but when Mexicans think about the tons of concrete that you will be pouring onto soft soil, the first image that comes to mind is that this beautiful and very expensive airport would start sinking in a few years. This is the perception and concern of many around me, but it seems that this is a problem of communication that could be easily resolved by adding subtitles in Spanish.
Hermoso proyecto de uno de los más grandes arquitectos en activo, Norman Foster y su estudio en Londres; en colaboración con arquitectos mexicanos muy jóvenes. Fernando Romero, de 46 años ha formado parte de los equipos que han construido edificios muy interesantes como el Museo Sumaya en la Ciudad de México o la Cada da Musica en Oporto, Portugal, de quien no conozco, desafortunadamente, algún proyecto personal, además de que Wikipedia no ayuda mucho a Romero cuando lo presenta como "el yerno del millonario mexicano Carlos Slim".
En mi opinión, el video es claro pero explica muy brevemente el proyecto, apenas menciona las dificultades a vencer para construir sobre un terreno poco sólido y en zona de temblores. El GRAN problema que veo es que el video ¡NO TIENE SUBTITULOS EN ESPAÑOL! Esta es una GRAN, GRAN OMISION. ¿En qué andaban pensando? @foster+partners: Esta no es la primera vez que ustedes construyen en un país donde el inglés no es el idioma oficial, ¿Qué les parece tener la cortesía de presentar este proyecto a los mexicanos en español?
Muchos en México hablamos inglés pero, come on! Esta no es sólo una metida de pata en materia de relaciones públicas, es desperdiciar la oportunidad de que éste y otros videos sobre el aeropuerto de la CDMX llegue a una mayor cantidad de gente y que permita aclarar conceptos que muchos mexicanos no conocen, como el de las ingeniosas estructuras 'flotantes' que @foster+partners diseñó para este enorme aeropuerto y que el video explica tan bien. Es una pena, realmente, porque los habitantes de la Ciudad de México siempre han sabido que edificios pesados, como el palacio de Bellas Artes, que se ha hundido más de un metro en el terreno suave durante los casi cien años desde que fue construido. Quizá ustedes en @foster+partners no lo saben, pero cuando los mexicanos piensan en los toneladas de concreto que se van a colar sobre terreno poco sólido, la primera imagen que viene a la mente es que este hermoso y muy caro aeropuerto comenzará a hundirse en unos cuantos años. Así lo percibe la gente y se preocupa, pero quizá se trata solamente un problema de comunicación con una solución muy simple y poco costosa: subtítulos en español.
P.S. @FR-EE @fernando romero: ¿A ustedes qué les pasó, se les fue el avión? El aeropuerto se va a construir en México, ustedes son mexicanos, ¿por qué no explicar el proyecto en español a sus compatriotas?. Hacer subtítulos no cuesta gran cosa y es una cuestión de cortesía.

No, the new president came, cancelled it and built another, cheaper, one 50 km away from the city and made the inauguration three days ago. The supposed airport that would solve the saturation problem of the old one is receiving only 6 daily flights, and due to it not meeting the regulation demanded by most international airlines, it has no international flights, except for one every two weeks from Venezuela, just so the government is able to call it an “international airport”.

@@SynDeus Esta demostrado que TODA la zona del lago de Texcoco incluida la pequeña area donde se localizaría el NAICM, se ha utilizado por años como un vaso regulador para que la capital no se inunde, al cambiar su ciclo hidrológico hubiese puesto en serio riesgo la inundación del NAICM y al Valle de Mexico causarle mas dolores de cabeza a los ya de por sí que se tienen, y ademas sin mencionarte a detalle innumerables hundimientos diferenciados ya detectados y demostrados....... maestría en Proyectos para el Desarrollo Urbano de la Universidad Iberoamericana. Dame tu correo y te informo a detalle toda la investigación, es de dominio publico.
