Wilbert Harrison's version was the bigger hit, going to number one on the Billboard charts. Little Richard's version barely made the Hot 100. Both were issued in 1959. Beatles, being Little Richard fans, may have only heard his version at the time. I remember hearing the Beatles version and wondering why the lyrics were so different.

"Kansas City"/ Hey, Hey, Hey" from the 1964 "Beatles For Sale" album, is a medley of two songs blended together. "Kansas City" is a Wilbert Harrison song, and "Hey, Hey, Hey", a Little Richard tune. The Beatles gave you the best of both worlds in that version.

A lot of great players on this album: Mick Green, Mick Gallagher, Henry Spinetti, Nick Garvey and the first recruit of the McCartney band, Chris Whitten. The second album recorded at Hog Hill Mill Studios in Sussex.

The Beatles covered "Kansas City / Hey Hey Hey Hey" as done by Little Richard. This version is closer to the 1959 Wilbert Harrison hit version of "Kansas City" which didn't have the Hey Heys Heys. Paul combined both versions on this recording. Never heard this before, rocks nicely.

I wish you guys will also cover I Wanna Cry in this series, the only original tune recorded by McCartney during the CHOBA C CCCP sessions.
That is a GREAT blues song, a great display of versatility by Paul

This album, released "back in the USSR" I did buy in the USSR in 1990, on vinyl. I was studying in Europe, during college, and a few of us trip. "The Revolution" to overthrow European Communism was on from the summer of 1989. I went to East Germany in 1985, on a pan-German trip when I was in high school. So, back to Berlin as the Wall was taken down was amazing. I went to Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and the USSR. In Leningrad, I obtained a few Rubles, through our tour guide ,and went to a shop, and found this album on vinyl. Four Rubles, was the cost. The weird thing was the clerk at this shop picked up an Abacas, and moved a few beeds....I had a 10 Ruble bill,....what the Abacas was for, I do not know, yet the USSR was a backwards experience, and quite strange.

This is actually a mashup of the original version by Little Willie Littlefield in terms of the verses and the Little Richard added Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey. The Beatles covered the Little Richard version with the much simpler verses.

@@maybeimamazedtribute On the Paul is Live album in the early 90s, you’ll hear a third version where he does another mash up of the two, but that one is more 50-50 whereas this one sounded like an entirely different song to you 😂

    10:19 "It's because we don't like you." ; )
The song "Kansas City" has an interesting history. It was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 1952. It was first recorded by Little Willie Littlefield in August of 1952 on Federal Records, One of the record label guys changed the name of the song to "K. C. Loving" and that is how it was released in 1952. It did not do well on the charts.
Little Richard recorded the song in 1955 pretty much like the original - but then did not release it. That version never saw the light of day until it was finally released on a compilation album 15 years later in 1970. Little Richard recorded another version in 1955 in which he changed the song quite a bit (left some of the lines out - and added the "Hey Hey Hey" part). This version was not released until late 1958 on his album titled ("The Fabulous Little Richard"). It was also released as a single in April of 1959 and it peaked at #26 in the UK (where The Beatles would have heard it) but it only got to #95 in the US. ruclips.net/video/H8YiUS1SSfk/видео.html
Wilbert Harrison recorded his version (which basically followed the original 1952 version) in March of 1959 and it came out in April of 1959. This version was a huge hit single that was #1 on both the R&B and the pop charts. It stayed at #1 on the R&B charts for 7 weeks and was at the top of the pop chart for 2 weeks in 1959. It features an excellent guitar solo by Wild Jimmy Spruill... and it's one of my favorite records from the 1950s. ruclips.net/video/f8tZO97uhyE/видео.html
Paul first heard the Little Richard ("Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey") in the first half of 1959 and loved it. The Beatles started playing that version live in the summer of 1960. They recorded it for their 4th album on October 18th, 1964. Paul obviously put together a mixture of the original song and Little Richard's version for this 1988 version. I prefer the 1964 version by a lot over this 1988 version.

An interesting choice, this album. I am not so keen on the songs, except maybe one or two, but I like the interpretation of the songs.

Ever since Run Devil Run came out, that has been the go-to covers album for me. But this rocks harder than I remember.
Still, part of me thinks Paul's vocal sounds a little like a guide vocal. Perhaps the vocal could've been recorded a little drier?
