I’m by no means a singer, but I love hearing you talk about this stuff! It really aligns with what I’m studying. Keep it up!
I was just at her Christmas concert at Atlantic City a few weeks ago. It was so fun and festive. She said she had been doing Xmas shows for 6 years now. I’m def going again next year if she does it again. She still sounds really good live. If you guys haven’t been to her Xmas shows try to catch them. Even her kids did a performance !

Yes. Pre-breast augmentation Mariah. As a nurse, I always wonder if these kinds of surgeries and the scar tissue that follows affects the breath work of singing. I imagine it’s like a baseball pitcher having a shoulder surgery. A singer’s breath work is like the shoulder of a baseball pitcher and the voice is like the pitcher’s wrist and hand. In baseball, you need to have incredible hand/wrist dexterity and control, but without a healthy shoulder, the wrist can’t make up for it.
My husband, who is a musician says that women who have been more plus-sized (like me) and have slimmed down, often retain the lung capacity of their bigger selves. Ex-Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson.

Gilded Liberty - what do you mean “where’s the hope?” I’d love to be able to lose weight too. The added incentive is your lung capacity, if you’re a singer may be at an advantage. Lungs used to pumping for someone 250lbs, don’t shrink once the person is 150lbs. Win win.
I'm not even near knowing what I'm talking about but when you talk about vowels it strikes me that some opera singers sometimes sound like they're singing the same vowel no matter what word they're singing.
Especially at the top of soprano ranges that's absolutely true

You'll hear that in modern opera singers with less than optimal technique. Older opera singers have very distinct vowels usually until they reach the top of their ranges.
Chest pulling is OK as long as you do it occasionally AND correctly . According to some voice teachers that's what they call a "true belt". Mixing is obviously healthier.
Balanced mixing is definitely the hardest part and maintaining raising the soft palate
Nightingale99 it’s hard to explain, it’s just a feeling. Sam explains it in another video where he says you’re using two muscle groups simultaneously-that’s why it can be so easy for your voice to crack or feel shaky and weird if you’re not really trained or have practiced a ton in doing it
@Nightingale99 it is mixing your head voice and chest voice neutrally to achieve a balanced mixed voice, not too heady and not to chesty.
Can you react to Mariah's tone changes every year??? Every year her tone slightly changes since 1990. People say her voice "deteriorated" in 1997 but in 2003 it was the closest to Daydream era (1995/6) its ever been! And then in 2014 the year she had her vocal fail, at Beacon Theatre 2014 a week later she sounded her best AGAIN and was singing Emotions like her prime. Her voice is really complex. Her tour performances capture her vocal the best and in 2018 and 2019 she still showed 5 octaves on tour

Her technique vocal was insanely good at that time, flipping in different registers. A little story behind this performance.
It was the first time she sang that Christmas classic original song in November 1994. So she was focused on delivery quite well her song. But the intro is just perfect :) smooth, belting falsetto and cool runs

I saw Mariah live for the first time in London this year after being a lifelong fan (she was fantastic) and also got hooked on your channel seeing the light in your eyes commenting on her in a previous video. A perfect storm for me seeing two musical inspirations meet. Thanks Sam!

9:43 then technique loving Sam should probably react to Mariah Carey in her Daydream era😂. She uses alot of light easy mixing. Take for example Hero, tokyo dome, 1996, one of her best concerts ever, vocally.
Sam you should do a whole Mariah series of her best performances of the 90's. It's what the songbird supreme deserves 😍 and I'd love to hear your opinion of how Mariah's vocal texture changed so much from 1996 to 1998. She developed a lot more rasp and her singing started to appear a lot less effortless. For example, Butterfly live. Still amazing, but in comparison to her silky, effortless, powerful vocals on the Daydream tour it's super different. And it's like, did Tommy do something to her or did the stress of the Daydream tour change her voice? It was only 7 shows, but she was doing acrobatics with her voice every time. Idk. :( Regardless, my fav vocalist of all time. Forever. Stream Caution, ya'll. 😋💖
I always wondered if it was the vocally demanding Daydream promotion and tour followed by recording Butterfly combined with the divorce (perhaps there was arguing/screaming behind closed doors, and/or possible drinking/smoking to relieve stress?) and subsequent lack of rest and/or vocal care (exercise, etc.) that may have led to her vocal decline?

I work at a major retail chain and most of my coworkers hate this song due to constant play from Halloween to a week before Christmas. Many memes, showing their disgust, but I LOVE HER AND THIS ENTIRE ALBUM! Its my goto Christmas album, i have loved her since i was 16, bought her tapes (cassette tapes kiddies) blasted in my dad's audi, and am still a huge fan at 44. ❤ just sharing what I'm feeling.. 😁

I love this version from Mariah Carey because it's just awesome. She's a unique singer in that she has control of so many different ranges in her voice, not that others don't but imo she is one of the best if not the best when it comes to just control and holding notes for what seems like forever lol.
It’s not fair for one person to have all of that vocal ability. What a legend. Even if her voice isn’t the same as it was back then, she still has an amazing legacy.
It will be amazing if you analize her singing Oh Santa at Late Late Show 2019! So you can hear the evolution and the "damage" in her voice when she's more confident in the performance

As someone who sang for a large portion of their life, it's amazing to hear the more technical and analytical language you use to explain similar techniques I was taught in my years in choir. It reinforces the good habits I formed in school and helps me correct my own singing today after not keeping up with it as much (other than being a Professional Shower Singer). And I'm learning new things along with it, too, and I've been reevaluating and wanting to make those changes to my own singing to improve. I adore watching your videos and learning how singers can sing so well (or sometimes not so well) and I'm excited to see which song you analyze next.
Thanks for the great video again Sam! I became Mariah Carey fan when I was about 10 in 1993 and I've loved her music since, especially the old ones. Thus, this video was a nice surprise for me! i love her performance of "oh holy night". that's my yearly christmas mariah jam. though it's a bittersweet experience now given the current state of her voice. i just miss those chilling mariah performances. her musicality mixed with her former vocal ability was other worldly.
