    If you do actual real driving calculations time savings for higher speeds usually are fairly negligible. For example, running 60 MPH over a 50 mile stretch of road and running 80 MPH over that same stretch, you will gain a whopping 90 seconds on average. Remember faster driving is not linear. You have other traffic that comes into play at higher speeds causing you to vary speed more often. Then at higher speeds, you will experience higher levels of driver fatigue due to having to be more alert for quicker reaction times and longer stopping distances. I recall a story told me when I was a teenager many years ago and used to drive fast all the time that two drivers started on a 500-mile drive at the same time. One drove the legal posted speed limits and the other drove as fast as he could at speeds up to 100 MPH. The slower driver arrived at the final destination less than fifteen minutes after the guy going all out. The guy driving all out was exhausted and wanted to rest. The other driver went on to have a wonderful meal with his friends.
    Don't even get me started on the physics of fuel consumption calculated by mass and speed over distance. You will find that it takes far more energy to move the same mass at a higher speed for the same distance. Then factor in inertia as mass at higher speed requires more energy and distance to bring to a stop. A stopping distance differential of 50 meters could be the difference between the life and death of the passengers in the vehicles impacted.

During my load from AZ to Saratoga Springs NY I averaged 9.3 MPG from the 75 Mph sign on the East side of Flagstaff til I got to Amarillo TX, and that's driving the speed limit whether 75 or a reduced limit in a construction zone. In March of this year I deadheaded from Kingman AZ to Spartanburg SC because my dad was put in hospice. I drove 65 Mph or slower the whole way from Kingman back to the house. I averaged 10.55 mpg from Kingman til I was near Henryetta OK with prevailing tailwinds. I still ran 65 or the speed limit back to the SC but with only seeing 9.7 mpg for the rest of the trip. Before delivering in Kingman on the 14th of March I had topped off my tanks in Albuquerque NM on Sunday morning and driven to the Petro in Kingman. On the drive home I topped off again in Grants NM and Hamilton AL. After being home for Dad's funeral etc for two and a half weeks I picked up another load heading to Garden City KS. I didn't hit a fuel stop until I got to Russellville AR.

The computer knows how to modulate the engine load and shifting to most efficiently accelerate you up to the set speed. When you need to focus on precision and safety, use the gas pedal. They must have really improved the cruise, because when I drove a 2016 FL, I was able to beat it by a couple tenths in my mpg. On moderate or large hills, I would gently tilt onto the throttle at the bottom, just cracking the throttle and keeping speed up. By getting a *bit* more speed and reducing the loss, I would carry speed/momentum further up the hill and could wait longer for full throttle. The cruise would wait a fair bit longer, then hammer the throttle to full all the way up.
    On gentle hills or nearly flat, cruise wins all the way.

If I feather footed around 20 psi boost the actual fuel taken would be about 1 - 2% less than the truck thought it should be. It varies from truck to truck, but you just want your highest gear at the lowest RPM that you can consistently hold without having to downshift for small hills. On Cascadias geared for fuel efficiency this is generally going to be 58 to 62mph, but if you're running really light loads and relatively flat terrain you can put it even lower without much difficulty.

    It's all physics. Drag, or the air resistance from trying to push a huge box down the road, increases with the square of the velocity. So it takes a lot more energy to maintain 70 mph than it takes to maintain 65 or 61 mph. Aerodynamic devices can help a bit, however this works only if you own the trailer you are hauling or somehow negotiate drop and hooks only with trailers that have these devices. Drivetrain losses increase with increased rpm and increased speed. Engine frictional losses are higher at higher rpm, and faster tires produce more heat even though the actual rolling resistance is unchanged by speed. That frictional heat from the engine all the way to the tires is nothing more than wasted engine power. We burned fuel to make horsepower to make heat. In general, once you get beyond the sweet spot for the engine's rpm the faster you go, the more fuel you will burn to cover the same distance. However, going too slow can also harm fuel economy if you are either lugging the engine or running at too high rpms in lower gears, which you covered well talking about accelerating. Then there is stop-and-go traffic, which absolutely kills fuel economy.

    • @r2db
      @r2db 2 года назад +1

      @@brahadeeshsuresh500 The manufacturer will typically tell you where you should be keeping the rpm for maximum engine efficiency. I know my tractor has a green band for engine rpm for this. If you have extra gears to keep it there then you only need to worry about all of the other factors (drag due to air resistance, frictional losses from tires, traffic, etc.). Most modern tractors have some sort of fuel economy display, so even if you are not calculating all of the other factors you could run for a couple hundred miles on level ground at one speed and compare to a similar distance at another speed (presuming the same loading).

    I drive a 2022 freight cas governed at 75mph. In the beginning I’d fly passed most truckers at 75 wondering why they are going to slow. Wasn’t until a week or 2 before I got extremely upset with fuel efficiency. Fast forward a bit I tested out 65-70range with nonstop cruise control and I went from 5.7mpg average across 5k miles to about 8.2mpg. With 190g tanks, that 5mph difference saved you like $600 in fuel. Some extra info; I’m otr 4 weeks in all 48. So that includes all types of roads and hills. I’ll never drive 75mph or without cruise control again. ALSO!! Use eCoast!!! For the love of your wallet, it’s game changer!

    Yeah so far you're beating me. I'm pretty certain you've got an apu on that truck, and that's definitely an advantage over my Kenworth T680 NG 2022. 7.9 average currently in the last three weeks going 65-70 (depending on the load and location). Idling at night when I'm back in Texas or Florida, yeah it doesn't help. Trying to get the boss to mount an apu or diesel powered generator or something, it's got all that room on the frame on both sides, and it'll pay for itself within a year.

      Hunter, check out another video from Ronan at ET on their Fuel Mileage Challenge. In it, Ronan shows what 20 drivers who accepted the challenge got for fuel economy over a one month period (Aug 2021). One driver who finished in the bottom 4 (17th) in overall mileage also finished top 4 in idle time (approx 3.3% of engine running). Running the prime mover might not make as big a difference as some think. That said, even using 1 gal/hour on your prime mover at idle is 10 gal. per day, which at current prices you're correct, the APU that burns 1 gal every 10 hours will pay for itself in a year.
      In case you're wondering and haven't yet checked it out, the top driver won $2500 Canadian, and the next driver won $1000 Canadian.
      Try slowing down a bit to about 61-62 mph and I think you'll come closer to Brian's overall 8.9 mpg.

    • @alshaw211
      @alshaw211 3 года назад

      "hateful?" that's colorful. I like it. please elaborate. In my experience all these "intelligent" systems they're implementing serve only to make a driver's job more tedious. Not only do you have to be mindful of traffic, the bulk and dimension of the vehicle, terrain, "traffic control devices" and a host of other issues, now you have to anticipate the actions of these automatic systems they're building in such as IPM. I see where it comes from though. The majority of the drivers large trucking companies recruit aren't skilled machine operators and don't know how to shift a manual transmission, operate the throttle for efficiency, be easy with braking, etc. It REALLY makes me ill though that ET Transport talks to their audience like we're all unskilled idiots. Ronan needs to shut his stupid mouth and address the issue with HIS unskilled workers - and probably his recruiting department too.

    • @cheryleades42
      @cheryleades42 3 года назад

      The wide range of speed that IPM allows on a cruise setting, is the problem. With a 60 mph setting , mine was ranging anywhere from 50 to 68 mph , without making an attempt to correct the speed. In places with a low speed limit, and a lot of hills ( California is the worst) this can cause problems, as far as potentially getting a huge ticket.
      Having said that , mine was set so the plus minus numbers were +5 / -4 , which was where I was getting the above variations in speed. A few months ago it was adjusted , with settings of +2/ -2 , and now is much better.
      I've also been getting better fuel mileage with the current narrower parameters on that setting

    • @EllieODaire
      @EllieODaire 2 года назад +1

      The problem here is your companies locking you out of your options. You are supposed to be able to change the +/- settings on the fly with the little option button on the bottom right of the cruise control buttons.

    61mph or 75mph? It's about time or money, which is more important to you? Let's do the math. @61 u can do 630 miles a day, @75 can do 750 miles. Will take @61 two hours more to cover 750 miles than @75. Question is how much fuel do each burn to travel 750 miles. I don't have the figure but an educated guess will do, @61 get 8 miles per gallon and @75 get 6.5 miles per gallon. So 750/8 burn through 94 gallons of fuel and 750/6.5 burn 115 gallons. Difference of 21 gallons saving for @ 61. Cost per gallon is approximately $3.50 x 21gallons = $73.5 in saving. Don't forget it take two hours longer to travel 750 miles for @61, so 73.5/2 hrs. Is getting paid $36.75/ hour worth the time behind the wheel? For owner operators, probably not, that's why they zipping by me @75 or more

    Hey Brian I love watching this challenge videos the most.I would like to add that
    I drive 2019 Cascadia and it has intelligence power management IPM that makes an amazing job and helps to get fuel mileage up to 9mpg.
    But not all the cruise controls are that smart since they don’t have IPM. I have driven a 2019 Volvo and that particular truck was not good with cruise control at all. I was making better without it.
    Here is why; A regular cruise control using much more power while climbing up hill to be able to catch the speed that driver asking to. But IPM technology understands about the hills and letting truck to slow down a little bit (-4mph), costing down hills also it’s letting truck to get faster(+5mph).
