    Still have the one I bought in 83 cleaned and lubricated it yesterday still a strong and eager runner. Many fond memories of this little engine . Great video Oscar.

    Again a such wonderful presentation Oscar. I bought the 1978 Hornby catalogue one month ago and have the Hornby R052 loco like new which is on the cover of the catalogue and the R066 Duchess of Sutherland like new on page two of the catalogue. Both bought last year.
    Stay safe at home if you are able. That's is the best to prevent an infection. A disinfection against viruses is very important too. All the best to you and your relatives.

I got the R066 Duchess last year, a beautiful model I was surprised by its matt paint finish, it always looks so glossy in the catalogue. I am sure I will get round to running it at some point.     Great show as usual. Last Christmas my wife wife bought me the Hornby cornish carrier set of which started me down the road to railway modelling, even though I am 65. This set has the same loco you are displaying. I think they may have altered the gearing as my engine can run at a crawl. Thank you again. Terry

    Interesting that Hornby ever thought to produce a model of such an odd prototype. Only one 101 was built and it wasn’t particularly notable in railway history, being relegated to mundane shunting work following conversion to coal burning.
    With that said, I’m glad Hornby made a model of such a unique locomotive. It’s Still going to this day, and with the current 0-4-0 chassis, realistic slow running is no longer a matter of carefully feathering the throttle! The detail isn’t all that bad either for a cheap little beginner’s model, and I reckon it could easily become of a high standard to those who look for realism on their railway.
    Love it or hate it, this model deserves respect. I give it wholeheartedly: it was my entry into model railways, bright green and named “Little Giant”, when I got the Local Freight trainset for my birthday some 10-15 years ago.

    Quite an iconic locomotive that is still produced by Hornby today, as well as the coaches. I'm glad you were able to find an original version

    The details on the loco are really good, especially the cab. If Hornby had just done a little more with the valve gear, it would be transformed. Even as it is, it's excellent as a budget offering and running it with the lovely four wheeled coaches is perfect. Cheers.

    Thanks for a very informative video Osca I've just bought 5 of these coaches very pleased but they are very light could I put weights underneath to help keep them on the track I don't drive them fast as I've only got a 6x4 layout but they look good and I've put metal wheels on them as well thanks

    Another enjoyable video Oscar. The mystery you mentioned about the catalogue number R016 on the coach chassis : this catalogue number is the same as the standard BR 20T Brake Van. This probably explains that footboard on either side of the coach as is common with the BR Brake Van. Talk about getting the most out of a common chassis!!

    Hi Oscar, I'm a fan of the Hornby 0 4 0 locos, didn't realise they went back to the 1970's. I have several of the later models, my favourite is a Holden tank in the E&GR beautiful dark blue. I will look out for some coaches for her to pull. She's much to pretty to be used as a shunting engine. Thanks for sharing.

    I've got a red one in the satan express trainset, the included generic paperwork for dismantling has transposed images to the written word! "Full" can motor these days. As you say one size (chassis) fits all - well a lot!

      Hi David great to hear you have these coaches, the piston / connecting rods are a bit crude, but some of the other features represented are rather fine for a model/toy at this price point. On another note, it may well run even quicker than your Eurostar in a straight line!

    The motor is likely to be the Johnson 111. This being a cheaper Hong Kong clone of the Japanese Mabuchi FT-13UO slot car motor from about 1966. I believe it was first used by Tri-ang in the Battle Space Turbo car from 1966 or 67. It would be nice to see the inside of the Battle Space Turbo car if you have one.
    A few years later versions of this 111 motor were used by Scalextric and MRRC slotcars starting around the early 1970s and into the 1980s. Although the FT-13UO revved to a quoted 32,000 rpm with 50g-cm of starting torque (according to the box I have), the Johnson 111 was much slower at perhaps less than 18,000 rpm. The fast speed of the 101 loco may be more to do with a low gear reduction.
    On a large timetabled layout I had been involved with, a 70s Hornby Black 5 was converted from tender drive to loco drive using one of these motors and the cradle to make it fit in an X-04 mounting points. With better gears, extra weight and pick up it was one of the best and smoothest reliable locos on the railway only slightly exceeded by some of the Wrenn locos we used.
    A closer inspection may show how this early motor is very serviceable, as once the springs are removed the brushes slide out and can be cleaned or replaced. The nylon brush holder end bell can then be removed to clean the commutator and replaced.
    If the folded tabs holding the can to the brush holder end bell break then slot racers commonly used some tiny screws to hold the brush holding end bell on. I had been doing this sort of work on slot car motors since I was a 13 year old in the quest for more speed by having the motor in top condition.
    In slot car racing specialist shops you are likely to be able to find new magnets, brushes, brush springs and even armatures. Although many slot racers will rewind the motor to dial in the rpm and torque they need. Can dial in lower revs and more torque if needed.
    The newer can motors currently used are much more sealed and harder to work on so described as disposable after so many hours.

    They came in for a bit of criticism these models, but with a little work you can turn them into a decent representation of the prototype. A good first place to start if you want to try your hand at superdetailing. :)

      Hi, I think there is a long history of modellers using items from the Hornby and the Tri-ang range of models over the years as starting points for far more detailed representations with a great deal of fun and satisfaction had in the process I imagine especially as the cost of the originals are relatively low.

    So from what I can make out 1978 was the year Hornby started putting Scalextric motors in their locos? Could that have been the year the pocket rocket was born?

    101 is still very much part of the Hornby scene, and features as the 2020 Centenary model for the Collectors Club. And back in 2010 they used it as their GWR 175th anniversary special loco.

    I have collected Triang since 1955, and the early stuff all still runs. This is more than I can say for some later versions that have failed early in their lives?
    I love your videos showcasing the early models. They are part of my origins in model railways..
    I'm intrigued with your layouts. some of the earlier videos seem to show a slightly different layout of all steel rail.. There appears to be a 'later' layout with system 6 track on part of it?
    I would love to see a video showing the differences in the layouts?
    I must also congratulate you on making full use of the overhead power supply.. Your layout is a great example of this gear.

      Hi Robin, it's great to hear you're enjoying the videos the very early videos show a layout which has system 6 nickel track on the outside and the elevated section. The inner track with catenary and turntable were all super 4. My mistake was using the nickel track as the models that would run on system 6 lost all of there pulling power. Once I realised my mistake I took out all the nickel track and replaced it with all steal system 6. The difference in running is like chalk and cheese. As the collection grew it became frustrating that a lot of the models would only run successfully in the inner line being the super 4. I then went on to take out all the system 6 and made a new layout with super4 but left the inner circuit as it was but I did put in an older version of the turntable purely because it looked better. What you see in my videos today is as far as I have got.

      My compliments to you.... I had thought that the system 6 track was actually the "later" layout? I had assumed that you had added a system 6 circuit to run some very "late" models with 'finer' wheels?
      My layout uses Tri-ang 'Standard track'.. Some of it from my 1955 layout.. It has been very difficult to find enough, that has not warped or shrunk? I imported some from the UK to Tasmania, that was produced at the same time as series 3.. I think it was produced for use with the high level piers and sidewalls, while the series 3 was used at table level?.. This Standard track (about 1960) used the better plastic and has not shrunk..
      My son has produced some 3D printed large radius curved sidewalls to match the other "originals" that I had?
      After viewing your video of Tri-ang's 'Hand De-coupler", and listening to your comments, We now also make our own version of the "hand uncoupler" printed in Yellow and Blue plastic (for visibility) and a hole for hanging it on a hook in the handle..
      He also prints acceptable replacement 'steps' for the Caboose, to replace the many broken ones that I have found?
      If you are interested, I could send some pictures? (Or a "new" hand decoupler)

    I bought that GWR Holden from an antique fair a couple of months ago. It is unboxed but never run. A bit of persuasion and it is fine. It does stutter on Peco setrack points. I have been collecting 4 wheel coaches for a while but I think they need a bit of weight adding. Have you ever dismantled one?

      Hi Philip I was surprised at how well she ran on my old track work. I was expecting her to be far more temperamental. I have yet to try and dismantle a 4 wheel coach. I think the roof and window unit may all be one and clip out?

    I am still puzzled why Hornby decided on the Holden tank as the prototype, when there were other more mass produced small engines. The later Nellie-type engine sometimes has a similar motor, and, to be honest, they run very well indeed. Love those coaches - it must have been something in mid-Victorian times to travel in one - I wish I could travel back in time! Thank you for another excellent video - never thought you'd do the Holden! :-)

    Maybe in front of a GWR autocoach? But I still don’t like the look of these and the basic 0-4-0 pugs. I much prefer the little freelance Jouef 708. I think Hornby should re-use the moulds of their 70s 0-6-0s (Jinty, J83 et al) and have those as a basic train set engine 🤷‍♂️. I do think the 0-4-0s have suffered from made up and poor liveries as well.

      Hi Russel, I would not surprise me if Hornby had just made these to fit in set boxes for a low cost. But prompted by David comment below I searched google images and there seem to be a had full of examples to be seen. As you know I'm not up on my prototypes! Do you have have any of these 0-4-0 locomotives?

      Oscar Paisley think I have Oscar as I was a member of the Collectors Club for a while and they gave away 0-4-0s . Certainly got a Caley 0-4-0 I may well have the GWR or a variation of it . Never run them as you can probably tell !
