I am here. I have that whole show on VSH. They were part of the gospel section that year. Denise Williams, Pops Staples and the Staples Singers, Andre Crouch and James Cleveland and Southern California Community Choir were all on this show. The gospel section of the Grammys have not been the same since then.
Dr. Mattie and the Clark sisters pulled the switcheroo on em. The whole audience sitting there half-clapping, looking confused, thinking they was gon sing You Brought the Sunshine. Naw, boo. Do not pass GO . . . we going STRAIGHT to church! LOL Their boldness for Christ is truly inspiring!
Kathy Hicks Because she had step and speak and dance as boldly for God and his mission as they do for the're mission, letting the world know God deserve praise all the time,no matter where,HALLELUJAH!
Yeah that was real disrespectful. The Clark Sisters were considered "rebels" for what they were doing at the time though they didn't break any rules. Weird.
The Joy & happiness Mattie had in her face was everything!! To be up there with her 'gurls' must've been one of the most happiest moments of her life. Really hate(d) how much backlash they got & how they treated her because of this performance. 😭😩
And besides, the dresses were beautifully modest! I think it was wonderful for Dr. Clark to be able to perform with her daughters. It shows a side of her that knew how to have fun and still be a Christian. Moreover, her daughters now have this precious memory of their mom now that she has passed. They were being witnesses for the Lord at the Grammys. Who cares what Pharisees in the church think?
I never seen this performance until now watching the movie. And I can not believe after they didn’t want her preform with her DAUGHTERS. This was well before my time but it is insane to know that.
I think it so sad Dr.Moss got in trouble for that... But u knw wat that didn't stop her they were fully dresses in praising Jesus ... #times have changed #legend the late great Dr. Moss with her girls👋
Unfortunately that is how so-called church people behaved. They made their own rules and interpretations that gospel music was only supposed to be for the church and not for the world. And going against that meant you were going to hell. Those times have changed, there are still people that believe this and are stuck in tradition
You know, I was stunned when I saw that on Unsung. How dare they? They did nothing wrong. Those bishops made it sound like they were dropping it like it was hot. They were professional but still kept it holy. I'm going to say this.... Jesus condemned the religious system in his day........hmmm IJS!!! I'm glad the Clark Sisters are still going at it. There are a lot of gospel artists/songs that I don't like, but it's not for me to judge or condmemn anybody!!!
This will now go down as a legendary moment for the world to see Dr. Mattie Moss Clark singing with her children!! This is the greatest moment for family bonding for them!! Thank you ladies and Dr. Mattie Moss Clark for singing this way back!! Nothing but love and support for all 5 of you!!
I love the Clark Sisters and their mother was a music pioneer.Stop hating on them,God gave them what they have.I love watching the history of music from Dr.Mattie Moss Clark!!
as a young person i was really glad to see Dr. Mattie Moss Clark in action. Clark sisters were truly brought up right thanks to great parents and the Holy ghost.
The crowd was not ready for all that church. That's how you tear the roof off the arena. I'm not COGIC, but I would have been up shouting in the aisles..
The reaction by the audience was quite interesting. I think Sheila E. appreciated what they were doing. Yes the COGIC was very strict back in those days. I was a part of the denomination for many during the 80s & 90s. I didn't wear pants for several years. It was not permissible. We all heard about Dr. Mattie being censored , but it wasn't something that could be discussed.
Dutchess80 i too have always compared it to that of a cult. Growing up with girls who were apart of the COGIC church and not understanding how we were serving the same Lord but I didn’t have the “restrictions” they did. I have a friend that finally decided to step out of the COGIC church and never look back. She loves the gospel, just not the way they make you interpret it. Also, there are a lot of undercover bishops who are abusing young men and or just sleeping with men in general. I’ve noticed a lot of men who are COGIC are homosexual, probably stemming from abuse.
THIS IS HISTORY--PERIOD. There is no way you could have a Kirk Franklin or Tye Tribbett without these sistas here!!! The Grammy's are still trying to recover....
When I first saw this on Unsung I googled to find it on RUclips. ..Glad it's on RUclips now and I hope someone post a longer version One of the most memorable Grammy performances
Blessed One the original was up here. It was a series of different gospel artists that came and performed but at the end came onstage together and performed together
This performance from the Grammys happened during a time when the Church Of God in Christ, Inc. leaders were way more strict and conservative than today. Many C.O.G.I .C. Gospel artist have been "sat" down because of situations similar to this one, for example Bishop Walter and Edwin Hawkins. The COGIC denomination has a very strong foundation in the Pentecostal Holiness doctrine which contributed to their disapproval of this performance. I'm COGIC but I enjoyed this performance, awesome job Clark Family.
Lawdy! I saw this live@grammys--it still gives me chills!! Lionel's in shock, but clappin' on beat. Dionne's ready to jump on stage with the Clark Sisters!
The Clark Sisters lifetime movie produced by Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott and The GREAT Mary J Blidge brought me here. Great job ladies. I really enjoyed their movie. HANDS DOWN 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
To help everyone who doesn't know. This is a historic and classic performance from the World Famous Clark Sisters with their mother Mattie Moss Clark included, Twinkie on the organ. This is the 1985 Grammy Awards. They were the first Gospel group in history to have their own spot on a Television show aired to the world in this fashion. THEY ARE SIMPLY LEGENDS & PIONEERS! The 1982-83 "You Brought the Sunshine" crossover hit caused the world to know the Clark Sisters.
Oh my goodness yes!! LOL!!!!! And Lionel didnt even turn around to the guy...as if he were embarrased. Puttin' on a front for Hollywood. Didn't he sang "Jesus is love" with the Commodores? He know the deal! LOL!
The Clark Sisters came out and shonuff scared both the Secular world(check the dude next to Lionel Richie at around 1:35) and the more Conservative wing of Christian music with this performance...LMBO!!! If watch their featured episode of 'Unsung', you'll discover that even high ranking elders within their assembly were taken aback by this event. Nevertheless, this performance was quite influential and groundbreaking for a lot of artists who are also openly passionate about their God.
Dr Mattie Moss Clark & Clark Sisters Are Legends! Very Anointed Women Of God! RIP Dr Mattie Moss Clark you Did A Awesome Job! Raising Your Great Daughters To have Such A impack on the World God Bless! 8/7/15.
Furthermore, the Clark Sisters were featured on the 2008 Grammy Awards with Bebe Winans & Aretha Franklin, which introduced them to a new generation of fans. They are second to none, trendsetters and trail blazers of the music industry, not just Gospel music.
I believe this was an icebreaker. All Genre music combined together to focus on the one music that helps us in the time of storm. When music producers can't produce any music they can turn to one genre of music that gives them inspiration which is....GOSPEL!!! Praise God for his songs of Zion.
Who’s here after watching the Clark Sister movie on Lifetime?😍😍

👋👋👋 hey y'all!
Dr. Mattie and the Clark sisters pulled the switcheroo on em. The whole audience sitting there half-clapping, looking confused, thinking they was gon sing You Brought the Sunshine. Naw, boo. Do not pass GO . . . we going STRAIGHT to church! LOL Their boldness for Christ is truly inspiring!
nubiadivina Hallelujah,Hallelujah, Hallelujah,Hallelujah Hallelujah,Halleluuuuuuuuuujah.
nubiadivina I know that's right! Halleuyah!!!! 🙌💖🔥💖🙌
They should have though because there's literally no videos of them singing "You Brought The Sunshine" live with Niecey at all.
Jalen Parsley omg very true!!!!
That’s exactly what they told them they wanted no shortcuts they said this on unsung
I came here straight from the movie.
super_woman_me sameee lol
Me too! :)
Me too! Dr. Mattie was on it! Sad that the Sanhedrin Council sat her down.
Yess!
Sameee!!! 😭😩👏🏾
lol..Karen busted out there like a boss on that first note
Kathy Hicks Because she had step and speak and dance as boldly for God and his mission as they do for the're mission, letting the world know God deserve praise all the time,no matter where,HALLELUJAH!
Cynthia Brown Yessssssss!!! Halleuyah!!!!
@@CBrown9758 *their* 😂😂
it's a shame how the COGIC officials told Mattie Moss Clark not to perform with her daughters after this. they brought church to the Grammy's
Michael Johnson Exactly!
Trailblazing with out fear often comes with both a price as well as a reward.
Now of days church people act a damn fool and face no reacouptions
Can't wait for the movie fr fr
Yeah that was real disrespectful. The Clark Sisters were considered "rebels" for what they were doing at the time though they didn't break any rules. Weird.
That's some performance. Seeing the audience reaction like Lionel Richie...some never been to church. It's our duty to spread the gospel.
Sheila E. was juiced
Andre Toney Preach,Praise the Lord!
Andre Toney Amen!
Lionel Richie was raised in the church
Yea Lionel upset me. Probably one of three black people in there and he refused to really encourage them and give some excitement.
The Joy & happiness Mattie had in her face was everything!! To be up there with her 'gurls' must've been one of the most happiest moments of her life.
Really hate(d) how much backlash they got & how they treated her because of this performance. 😭😩
" yall got 2 min... that's all we need"
SHOUT! HALLELUJAH 🙌👏✌
I will forever be amused by Dionne's razor-sharp focus on them. She. Was. FEELING. IT.
She was there for it!
I said the same exact thing! Dr Mattie was so cute with them. Those people didn't know they was going to church right then. Surprise!! Halleluuuujah!
They weren’t ready. Lionel either
Toni E. Lionel was ready. It was the guy sitting next to Lionel that didn’t quite know where he was.... LOL!
guy sitting next to him like...."don't you want to praise him"?
I was finished😂. I wish I could’ve been there live, would’ve cut a rug for the Lord right there in the aisle.
And besides, the dresses were beautifully modest! I think it was wonderful for Dr. Clark to be able to perform with her daughters. It shows a side of her that knew how to have fun and still be a Christian. Moreover, her daughters now have this precious memory of their mom now that she has passed. I came to watch this because of the movie; who else?
I'm an 1hr and half behind but yes! I was like let me see the original!!!
@@mayahj1005 same!!
We all did! 😂
They were spot on!
Karen with them feet was getting it and Iiked how everybody kept up including Dr. Mattie. I got tired just watching them. That energy was crazy!
@MissGemini Twinflame I know right
Do people realize the doors God allowed the Clark Sisters to open for others. Go head yall
How many people came here after seeing the Clark Sisters movie on lifetime

Listen to Lisa needed to see the original footage!🧐😜
Listen to Lisa I came straight here as they showed this performance on the movie to see how close the re-enactment was.
Karen came out the GATES FIRING with that opening note , they was not ready for them sisters to go to church that night lol
I never seen this performance until now watching the movie. And I can not believe after they didn’t want her preform with her DAUGHTERS. This was well before my time but it is insane to know that.
Most definitely!! 😩 So heartbreaking.
LOL! They was like "Look, uuuh, if we gon' sing at the grammys, we just gon' BRING IT, ok? Aight. Y'all were warned."
I think it so sad Dr.Moss got in trouble for that... But u knw wat that didn't stop her they were fully dresses in praising Jesus ... #times have changed #legend the late great Dr. Moss with her girls👋
i don't think they should have not got in any trouble and it was so crazy how she got in trouble this is like what!!!!!!!!!!
Umm..., oh I see. You watched the video of the clark sisters. (Unsung)
yes i did did you...............lol
Taneisha Stevenson-Randle I think it's sad she got in trouble too. They all look so happy on that stage together.
Unfortunately that is how so-called church people behaved. They made their own rules and interpretations that gospel music was only supposed to be for the church and not for the world. I love the Clark Sisters and their mother was a music pioneer.Stop hating on them,God gave them what they have.I love watching the history of music from Dr.Mattie Moss Clark!!
I certainly have a deeper appreciation for them after seeing their struggles. Wow! God bless them🤗
Good luck having another gospel artist singing a song like that again at the Grammys. A same too.
as a young person i was really glad to see Dr. Mattie Moss Clark in action. Clark sisters were truly brought up right thanks to great parents and the Holy ghost.
The crowd was not ready for all that church. That's how you tear the roof off the arena. I'm not COGIC, but I would have been up shouting in the aisles..
I would’ve cut a rug with you my brother in Christ!🦶🏼👏🏼🦶🏼👏🏼🦶🏼👏🏼🦶🏼👏🏼
I just watched the movie- it was great!!!! I’m ticked off though about how those cogic men treasured momma!
The reaction by the audience was quite interesting. I think Sheila E. appreciated what they were doing. Yes the COGIC was very strict back in those days. I was born and raised in COGIC as well. I remember all of the flack they received from our general board bishops
Kantrice Dorsey I'm with u to God be the Glory.
censure not censor and COGIC has and has always been a pentecostal CULT that oppresses women
Dutchess80 i too have always compared it to that of a cult. Look how well covered they were & singing unto the Lord.🙌🏾 Those pastors were hating on Dr. Mattie.
They was in there straight clowning and sanging, moving & grooving..lol!!! Those folks was in there like what am I watching.. Lol!?!?

You're absolutely right. But the Hawkins rebelled and had worldwide success.
TheSlickest08 According to their after this they ordered Mattie to never perform with her daughters again. smh.
Chris Gilrath Dr. Clark wasn’t ordered to not sing with them. She made a choice to not publicly sing with them again.

The Lifetime movie brought me here! ❤️
Coming to re-visit this performance after watching The Clark Sisters movie!!! Epic!!! Lived through all this with the church.
I didn't know this performance existed until the movie! God is real and they should have left Dr. Mattie Moss-Clark alone!
I didn't know Dr. Mattie was there when I first saw this performance so I rewatched this after watching the Ladies of Gospel. 😄

Lionel should've definitely shown out back then. He had to be "colorless" SMH
It was shameful.
I remember watching this when it aired..... had no idea about the drama behind the scenes after their appearance!
I think the Lifetime movie did this performance justice! 👏🏿
