My first visit to the Phoenix Zoo was shortly after it opened. It was known as the Maytag Zoo, founded by the Maytag family. It is a private, non-profit zoo and is continually improving the exhibits to create more natural habitats. The Zoo is largely responsible for bringing the Arabian Oryx back from near extinction. I worked at the zoo for a few years and I’m very proud of the zoo. I’m glad that you mentioned that some of the birds are rescue birds that are unable to fly. Many people think it’s cruel to keep them in the smaller enclosures. The Golden Eagle is one of my favorites.
I'm so happy that you made this video. I grew up going to this zoo (I even have a brick with my name on it on the walkway!) but moved across the country and haven't been able to go back in many, many years. This was such a great video and really brought back some wonderful memories for me!
Phoenix zoo is a very old Zoo it’s a staple but wildlife is newer and offers some cool shows and attractions, I also recommend out of africa and bearizona but that one is a drive to Williams near Sedona worth it though Sedona is beautiful
What a fun zoo. Been to Arizona a few times. But never stopped at the Phoenix zoo. I like that the exhibits they are pretty large. I have seen Road Runners in the Mohave Desert in CA at Red Rock. But never in a zoo. Very cool.
The last time I went to the phoenix zoo was when I was very young i was probably 5 yrs old and my whole moms side of the the family came with us and we had a fun time. But we don’t go to that zoo anymore it’s js too expensive. But we do go to the Tucson Zoo which we call the Reid Park Zoo and it’s also a lot of fun.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. We just took our 2 year old last Monday for my birthday and now she keeps asking to go back to see the animals. So I decided to RUclips for a video and came across this one. She recognized a lot of the animals because we said good morning to a lot of them. The moment she saw the play ground she remembered it and said she wanted to go play. Since we spent a lot of time there. Thank you again for the video now when she asks I can just play it for her
Grew up just down the road from Phoenix zoo, went there many times throughout my childhood, and then as an adult, I had membership for many years until I moved to northern California a few months ago. Bit of interesting trivia for you, the squirrel monkeys that call the monkey village home (the one that was closed), are all named after star trek characters.
I'm 30 and love watching these zoo videos. I would totally be going to the zoo on the regular, but since I am single with no kids, I feel I would be looked at weirdly rofl.
I don’t think you would at all! Perhaps the kids areas would not be a place you’d be able to frequent, but even the San Diego Zoo’s newly redesigned Children’s Zoo is great for all ages (except the playground of course). You could totally visit Zoos on your own!
@@russellwilliams3209 I hope you enjoy it! We visited again this past Spring Break and had a great time. We were hoping the predator passage would be open, but it looks like that’s still in the works. Maybe next year!
I'm from phoenix and I've been there so many times, at least 6 of them have to be from feild trips alone! When you can try wildlife world zoo it's way better than the phoenix zoo and the stingray exhibit is actually free (though I do think you need to pay to feed them, petting is free)
Oh interesting. They had a barrier up around the stingrays and no one was getting close so I assumed that you had to pay to just get in there. I didn’t ask. I guess that’s on me. 😅 I’ve not heard of the Wildlife World Zoo. I’ll check it out.
@@drpepperyml Oh, good to know. Thanks! I did look up the Wildlife World Zoo. We will for sure have to go on our next trip to Phoenix. We have some friends who live about 20 minutes north of the city so we will be back for sure!
1 PM? No, unless the date you are looking at has some special event going on, I wouldn’t expect it to close that early. You could call to ask for certain. And yes, I saw adults on the rideables.
Nevermind, I just checked their website. That is odd indeed. It appears to be summer hours. My best guess is that Phoenix heat is too intense in the summer to be open later than 1 PM. It looks like they are open at 7 AM which is really really early for zoos. But that’s to combat the heat.

Great video of my childhood hometown zoo. Love the Phoenix Zoo so much. You are going to absolutely love Henry Doorly Zoo!
I’m looking forward to it so much!
You literally see those road runners running around on the streets here in Arizona! They’re so cute!

That’s super fun. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one anywhere, wild or zoo, until this visit.

@@priscillaroy8147 I appreciate the kind words! I bought a season pass at the PHX zoo after reading your comment, so thank you!
