I'm not sure it came across, but between Jimin and Jhope I meant to say that both have technical "weaknesses" that they turn into strengths in terms of artistry.
Next I really want to make the video on Taemin - if you have videos that aren't official dance practices or super well known, feel free to link them (though I do think I'm familiar with a lot). It will be about the reasons his dancing is extremely well received, so the format and topics will be a bit different from this type of video
(Also I'm sorry about the inconvenience with reading and watching at the same time, I'll try to avoid it for my shorter videos)

I hope this helps, I'll be happy to see your opinion about Taemin! I find that people either die on the hill that he's the absolute best of all time in kpop, which is a bit disingenuous if we're honest, or dismiss him entirely because they're put off by the praise, they find that only his stage presence lives up to the fame, or just don't personally like his specific style and therefore don't give him the due credit.

What I adore about Ni-ki is that you can feel he loves dancing. He doesn't stick to one genre, he just loves it all as long as he can move his body to the music. He wants to try everything, he wants to be good at everything. If you ask him about who is his favourite member in other groups, it'd be obviously the main dancer 😂
Can you imagine that his first hiphop class was already in Belift as a trainee? But people assume he learnt it at very young age because he does it so well.
Another thing that catches my attention is how his dancing didn't have regress despite growing like 20 cm in 3 years. Usually the dancers are on the shorter side and tall members look awkward dancing but he's 183 cm and I always see knetz being surprised how someone this tall dances so well and look so light. I was worried that him growing so tall will affect his dancing but he's still as amazing as the first time I saw him.

yes poor baby talked about how hard it was in his bones and how he could cry from how much they would hurt and hoped that he would stop growing lol. but i agree! i think it's great that niki smartly chose to center his style around fluidity as it's an execution that looks great on ppl with long limbs. you can really see his personal stylistic inflections whenever he covers riehata choreos! she's got basically the opposite body type to him so even though the movements are the same during his covers, his style is so different! and i mean the kid grew up with a michael jackson shrine in his childhood home, he's been working towards this dream for over 10 years despite his young age! truly a gem in the industry, i can't wait to see his growth as an artist!

my assumption is that because most enhypen choreos are better suited for heeseung/jungwon/niki's strengths, their skills get to shine more. plus since enhypen is known for 'powerful performance,' the members who can deliver powerful executions will typically get more chances to shine (like how even though jake is not the most technically refined, he had a lot of solo parts this award season bc of his strong core and body tension). jay (and sunoo to an extent) has a much more effortless style, which is very hard to accomplish but a lot of enhypen's choreo isn't suited to show off his strength (except paradoxxx, he definitely shined the most there imo). i do think as enhypen progress in their careers and diversify their styles more, jay will be able to show off his talent in hip hop more!

your analysis of how j-hope takes his upper-body hunch/tension limitations and turns it into a defining feature of a consistent, through-line dance character (I’m loosely paraphrasing) was genuinely fascinating and so brilliant. thank you for putting words to a thing I understood but couldn’t explain. I think non-dancer people sometimes (first of all, I am people, second of all this is a broad strokes comment so it may not apply to everyone!) kind of overlook his actual skill - in part because he has the training to make everything look easy and effortless, and when he gets specific spotlight, like in the dna dance break at the end where he’s center, he leans into the goofy of it all. It took me a while to realize that the goofy comes from his body positioning (and also how like. powerful and radiant his joy while dancing can be, and also his curated, sunshine idol image), and not from any kind of lack of technical skill, emotion, or musicality.

It highlighted to me how much tension bothers me in dancers and I've always felt it but couldn't find the word for what wasn't connecting even when everything LOOKED good but the difference between Yeonjun and Jungkook/Jimin was like night and day! That release is SO important and adds sooooo much dynamics.
Jay was higher on the list that I thought BUT your point about how he is during harder hitting choreo in the title tracks makes sense why he's never stood out to me during dance practice reactions. I already KNEW J-hope would be numero uno!! A beast.

Whenever I watch your Enhypen dance practice videos, I always say to myself that Jay is a better dancer than you think, because he does not shine that much in their title tracks, but in their B-Side tracks and Dance Jams ("Dance Jam" is when they are doing live freestyle or just dancing to music), he stands out more. And to be honest, a lot of fans (including myself at one point) think he's not that good of a dancer (overlooked or underappreciated), but then professionals always commend him for his dancing.

Finally an analysis that gives J-Hope his well-deserved flowers! I feel like people often overlook it, sometimes it's mere basic preference or ignorance (as in literally, not the insult) about the skills involved, but sometimes it's purely out of snobbish reasons, because street styles (and here I'm talking on a very vast level, not just limited to BTS) are generally more looked down upon when you have contemp or classical influences in the same room, so people forget to look at the overall picture of dancing skillset and expression offered if it all comes from a street base. So yeah, it was refreshing to see Hobi in that first place. He's an amazing dancer with a vast array of skills which he knows how to use very purposefully while feeling super natural.
As for Yoongi, personally I would've put him a bit higher even before his Haegum dance practice dropped, but that's something to agree to disagree on lol

I have been an ARMY for 9 years and watched/read A LOT of analysis on BTS dancing and Hobi is placed as #1 99% of the time so I am confused on where you got the idea he was underappreciated or underrated when its always been the general consensus he is amazing? I think some of yall confuse less popularity for a lack of appreciation. Jimin is more popular and so you might hear more praise on his dancing but the fandom majority has always agreed Hobi is #1. The choreographer has said it, the company has said it and BTS themselves always say he is their #1 and its obvious how respected he is as the dance leader. There was even a time where it was forbidden to even have a personal preference where Hobi isnt #1 and iv seen the fandom tear into ppl who say Jimin or JK is best countless times. Idk if its because a lot of yall are new but recently some Hobi stans are under the impression the fandom does not appreciate Hobi's dance skills and its absolutely baffling cos all the evidence suggests otherwise. Was there a particular thing that triggered this like a bad analysis or is it cos yall see Jimin getting praised more? cos im starting to think its the latter...

J-Hope is a genius dancer. Talking about his dance has always been interesting to me!
His techniques and skills are so honed and the way he conveys his feeling through dance is just so mesmerizing. You will never find a single iota of pain or struggle in him, he has never slacked. Hobi is an ace in almost every style which without a doubt would make him an elusive open-style dancer as well. Two qualities that I find unreachable about him are isolation (& body control) and the way he is "balanced" in the best way possible *every single time* he is dancing! Whether it's between groove/sharpness or energy, he utilizes the best position. (In addition, his "blue check" challenge with Jay Park has to be the personification of groove!)
He has it all; techniques & skills, positional awareness, experience, consistency, posture, angles, passion, core strength and stamina (as a plus point), fluidity, variety, versatility, dance line, bodyline, body control & etc his freestyle is insane too. Everything he showed as "freestyle" esp in recent years is only his warm-up sessions (He usually does 1 hr of joint and isolation warm-up before the actual practice.) so even these videos are not enough to evaluate his great freestyle skills in the other hand!
He is simply excellent. The only flaw is that he is not a show-off !! That's it! He has never shown off his dance in any mean (BTS choreographies don't do justice to him moreover). Hopefully, we will get more of his dance in the coming-up year. I'm rooting for it, his dance is a blessing to the eyes.

Taehyun is really an underrated dancer. He's a powerful and precise dancer and I think hip hop style is his. Considering that in TXT song his vocal parts are always the most difficult one with high notes, adlibs and harmonization, I'm always so impressed by his vocal stability and great dancing skills. Probably, if he will have a solo dance stage (without thinking to the singing part), he will show us even other aspects of his dancing and flow he has.

I also really liked the highlights for Jay of ENHYPEN. He dances with a lot of heart, but historically, he's not usually thought of when people talk about ENHYPEN's main dance line - but credit is due where credit is due for sure. I find it so interesting how a lot of these things you explain are things even I, a non-dancer, can "feel" instinctively. Obviously a lot of the intricacies are lost on someone who doesn't know better, but throughout this video I had a lot of lightbulb moments from you putting things that I only had a vague impression of into words - particularly why exactly Hueningkai comes across as somewhat awkward to me with his neck, or what you said about Jungkook's execution being textbook (something I'd already put into words, although I don't have the skills to explain what exactly about his moves makes it come across that way). I think it really goes to show the power of expression of dance, that even someone like me can instinctively understand that, say, Jungkook doing a more emotional choreography isn't having the same emotional impact as Jimin doing one, even if I can't explain why. Which is why I love dancers actually diving into the "why" and giving me more tools to understand dance as an art form!
Although I will say, like with any skill, learning more about it and just how much details go into it is a bit overwhelming and makes me feel entirely lost as to how to gain those skills :') guess it's time for me to cough up money for lessons huh

I honestly heaved a sigh of relief when I saw your analysis about Huening Kai bc I felt like I was crazy for noticing his hunched shoulders. Obviously he’s a good dancer-TXT’s dances are _hard_ and I applaud anyone who can do them with such vigor and accuracy-but I’ve been worried about Kai’s posture for a while now. Like you said, there’s a higher risk of injury. I also think the hunched look makes him look more awkward than the other members, part and parcel because he has naturally broader shoulders and a broader chest/torso than the others (That’s not a weight thing, that’s a bone structure/muscle placement/genetics thing) so it’s more noticeable when he hunches his shoulders. I hope this is something Kai improves upon in the future because he’s already a great dancer and fixing that would not only lower his risk of injury but really heighten his overall skills, and who wouldn’t want that?
Edit: I forgot to mention, I wonder if part of the reason Kai hunches is less poor technique and potentially more so having been instructed previously to lower himself to height-match the others. TXT’s choreo involves a lot of group work and I find it rather interesting that the two tallest dancers of the team have height-based issues.

Literally binged all your videos after I found your channel yesterday and I’m a huge BTS fan, so this was a really nice treat! I’m a former tap dancer of 9 years (currently I mostly do square dancing, which is an entirely different thing!), with some minor experience in ballet, contemporary, and jazz. I have very little experience w/hip hop and street dancing, but find it fascinating! You did an awesome job at explaining everything! I completely agree with your decision to include how well-supported certain dancers are and thus their injury risk as a factor in your rankings. The biggest reason I stopped doing tap was because of 2 left ankle injuries (tho only 1 was dance-related). It’s been 10 years since the 2nd injury, but my left ankle is still a little weaker than my right. Jumping and landing on your ankle instead of your foot is literally a dancer’s worst nightmare!

Whenever I watch TXT choreo, I always feel that he is hunching down because he's tall, I know other tall people who do that and I wonder if it's something he also does away from the stage. But I loved how you pointed out the pros and cons of each person. Thanks for doing this!

good on you for placing Hobi at #1. Jiminie is the easy choice to beat all the others for sure, but to my eye there's a clear distinction between him and Hoseok. no dancer is perfect! but for me, Hope's ability to blend with the group, maintain perfect control, and also execute amazing groove is what takes him to the next level.
I DO love that this vid pointed out Jimin's background in street styles though, because his own stans pigeonhole him into this image of a contemporary specialist when he's really not. he's more of a jack-of-various-trades, as this video pointed out, and that's what makes his textures so cool.
I'll have to check out Ni-ki more. he's impressive, especially for his age.

I do contemporary, majorette, popping and basically just anything under the hip hop umbrella so as I dancer I relate to both of them a lot. Every time i try to compare them I find new things that I think one of them does better. I usually just rank by their specific performances. Like who was the best in danger or black swan.

I love how you pointed out the tension in some of their dancing. In some ways I like to see the tension, its endearingly try-hard and you see a lot of that in younger groups. They're really focusing on synchro and not messing up. Its kind of the opposite of where BTS are at now. Watching them dance is also a treat for the opposite reason, theyre confident and relaxed, they arent as worried about getting things perfect and have moved towards showing individual style so much more in the last few years. The synchronization is still there but their personalities, skills, and texture shine. ALSO, I feel like we're seeing TXT move a little more towards individual style and greater performance confidence, which is cool to see.

I especially enjoyed seeing the analysis of Enhypen as I’m not as familiar with them but knew enough to have had initial preferences during performances I had seen. Jay’s style made him stand out less to me in something like Drunk-Dazed (although his general stage presence still caught my eye) but suddenly blow me away in Paradoxxx. Also feel like the tension that some dancers have has such a polarising effect on general opinion of their skill. I certainly find that it can put me off in some cases but create amazing visuals in others.
It was also fun to guess who was coming next in the rankings!! Have subscribed and can’t wait to see more videos like this in future. Thank for all the effort you put into these ❤
P.s. also it’s a huge credit to your balanced and evidence based perspective that the comments from fans of each group can see your point of view without taking personal offence on behalf of their own bias!

Wow it took me almost an hour and a half to watch this video so I could read and watch your examples fully, can't even imagine how long it took you to make it. Also would love to see your "complete" analyses you talked about at the end. Thank you again for making this, really love these videos, I feel like learn so much through them.

I mentioned that already in your EXO video but will say it again - I appreciate your hard work on this so much!! You are literally what we’re missing in kpop, an educational content. There are plenty of song rankings, kpop opinions etc. but what this community really need are people who can taught us things. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and going out of your way to explain things like groove, popping… ❤
I was also wondering, at the end of the series - will you rank all the top dancers from those videos? (EXO, BTS, Seventeen, NCT etc.) Just curious, but I enjoy this series so much nevertheless. Thank you again!❤

Thanks for this detailed analysis! As someone who barely dances I learned a lot of terms and dance knowledge from this video! To be honest Jay’s ranking surprised me quite a bit but after seeing the reasonings it made me appreciate his dancing more. Enhypen really has 1 main and 4 lead dancers in their group😂 Also it’s nice to see Jhope being appreciated so much. I’ve always thought of him as the best idol dancer!

And about the “tension” that you’ve mentioned in Enha members, I feel like since the dark blood comeback many of them improved on this aspect quite a bit. Their dance practices now look a lot more lax and artistic imo. I would love to see your new edition of their dance analysis!

i love how clear and accurate you explained it all. Like i know nothing about dancing but as a viewer i can see their capabilities but i just can't put it in words bcs idk the right term to use. Honestly, it amazes me the way you explained Heeseung's dancing skills and his mannerisms as a dancer but nevertheless he's still a great performer. I love how you explained everything, thank you, i learned a lot.

It is hard for me to rank Jimin and J-hope, all I want to say that definitely both of them can be seen as professional dancers and it is really unfair to have such a powerhouses in one group for other groups. I hope we can see another duo choreography for them, that justice their each own style.

Jay is really talented, I feel like there are some similarities between his approach and strengths with those of a couple Seventeen members (Vernon or Woozi, maybe Dino?), so I definitely think he could become as much of a great dancer in the future

The thing with jk is that he never imo lean fully into the dancer role. Which is why he isn’t 3rd. He is know as a singer, so his energy goes into that and preforms. Compared to 3rd dancing isn’t his main thing. His dancing is often overlooked bc that is not what his persona is based around. I would be interesting to see the difference if he wasn’t also a singer.

It's interesting that you brought that up because just recently, like a couple of days ago someone mentioned on twitter that there was a time when he thought about focusing on dancing instead of being main vocalist. I can't remember if this was connected to their book release or not? Was it a story from the book? I can't remember. But supposedly he and Jimin were walking home from dance practice one day and while having ice cream he was musing whether or not he should focus on more on dancing. Maybe someone can add more information here

@@TooLittleInfoyea, he was initially really focused on dancing, that was before he found out he was going to be the main vocal. I think that's when he placed singing as his main priority and dancing as his second because he felt unskilled as a singer in comparison to other main vocalists. So while he definitely puts a lot of effort into dancing, his main priority isn't to be seen as one of the best dancers but to consistently improve his vocal ability until its at a point where he's satisfied, which I think he always work towards because he's never satisfied.

I love the video and I appreciate that so many of the thoughts, ideas, and impressions that I had are brought to life through it. I have a background in dance as well, and trying to explain why I favored one dancer over another was difficult for me to articulate to a non-dancer.
I think you really nailed it on the head. I agree with pretty much all of your analyses regarding rank.
In the case of Jimin or Hoseok, I’ve always heard the discourse being hinged primarily on preference (and with Jimin being more popular, it’s often him who is favored). But truthfully, I think that there is a difference of skill. Jimin’s textures and variety of experience makes him well rounded with a valuable skillset. He conveys emotional or dramatic choreography very well, making his impact and stage presence so strong. J-Hope’s intentional groove changes and persona indicates such a high level of expertise. His dancing always comes across so naturally, even in precise choreos like Fake Love. Clearly the funky choreos suit him better, but every time I watch some of their old dance practices, no matter the style, he still seems natural in it. He somehow manages to make it look effortless, which is what makes him ranked 1 for me.
What I love and adore about both of them as dancers is that they very much are humble enough to always learn new things, new styles, and continue growing as artists and performers.
Thank you for the wonderful video!

I was just out of the bts hole but this took me right back in... Honestly it's completely insane how talented they are, especially 3j, and also appreciate taehyung bc like.. He's actually a good dancer his only sin is to be in a group with jeon "i've managed to accumulate all aspects of an Idol™ to the point that I am Thee Golden Standard, I've never been bad at anything physical, ever, and i will die before i'm proven otherwise", park "i will dance to all kinds of music and i am going to combine them in such a way that puts fear into God" jimin, and jung "my knowledge and skills in dance basics that i will use for fitting into and slaying every choreo that is put on this Earth are more stable than your sense of self, and also the whole perception of reality" hoseok. You can't compete (or keep up) with that.
Anyways what i'm trying to say is i need 3j in a dance crew.

tae has been part of the dance line since 2018 for a good reason he is very very skilled. all seven of them being able to dance to so many vastly different choreos, keep up their work ethic when they r on top of the world and they have nothing to prove but still raise the bar level every time they perform is so admirable and inspiring about them and they have no ego when they go to practice. like yoongi getting hiphop lessons for idk how many months now starting off with the basics to grow/build a strong foundation for what he wants to do next with those skills.
theyre not like "we r good already so there is no need to practice" but its more like we have to give 120% every time we r on stage so lets practice to not let the team, the audience who came to see us down and for us to know we gave it our all and have no regrets. no wonder they have one of the hardest choreos in the industry like yall r beasts on stage

This analysis was really fascinating to watch, in terms of talking about technique and each dancer's strengths and weaknesses. I liked it a lot!
On a technical note, as someone who only knows the members of BTS and the fact that each of the videos need to show the whole body so everyone's faces are small (and uhhhh i'm not good at faces and half the time they're obscured by hats and hair anyway) it may be helpful in future videos to consistently preface each vid with a little marker for who you were talking about, which you did inconsistently with like, a red arrow or the shading or once with a quick verbal description in the text part like the one in the blue hat (I liked that best, since it stayed onscreen for the duration of the clip to remind me who I was watching for)
Thank you for your hard word creating this video essay! 💜
