It's 2024. It's hard to believe she left us 41 years ago. Who else besides me is still listening to her beautiful songs? I'm glad Richard Carpenter is still alive and still in the music business.
I was born in 1950, the same year as Karen. She died so suddenly, tragically and young at 32 years old. I was devastated when she died. I still love her voice and music. Karen arguably had the most pure and natural female voices of all time. As a fellow SoCal teenager, I followed their career from the time they won the 1966 Battle of the bands at the Hollywood Bowl.
Great voice, among the best ever, no doubt about it. But don't get carried away. It's not a competition, but don't sell Linda Ronstadt, for instance, short in this discussion. Or Anne Murray or Shania Twain in her best days ...
After watching a documentary about the Carpenters, these words take on a greater poignancy. When you consider she had a mother who couldn't say she loved her, an oft-envious sibling (although he was the mother's favorite), and a physically and emotionally abusive husband, it's no wonder that she poured herself into her songs. God blessed Karen with a rare talent--a solo alto voice--and yet she had so little time to share it with us. Even so, thank you Karen for leaving us a legacy of exquisitely performed songs!
"Goodbye To Love" has not ONE but TWO absolutely groundbreaking achievements. Not only did it essentially create the "power ballad" template when Richard told the late great Tony Peluso to just "let it rip" after he'd done a rather by-the-numbers "sweet" solo. But Karen did an IMPOSSIBLE display of breath control by singing "Time and time again the chance for love has passed me by and all I know of love is how to live without it" IN ONE BREATH. TWENTY SIX SYLLABLES. TWENTY SIX!!! Not even SINATRA did that. That's like dunking on Jordan, LeBron and Kareem all at once! TWENTY SIX SYLLABLES. Try it.. Go ahead. I dare you.
That’s my favorite part when I sing this song which I enjoy… time and time again the chance for love has passed me by and all I know of love is how to live without it… it’s wonderfully tricky but I can sing it in just one breath! Maybe also because I could relate to it 😢

Absolutely correct !!...she REALLY was one of the greats....I still say the best ever female voice that I have ever heard...only dusty Springfield and judith Durham of the seekers could come close....so very sad to lose her at only 32...so so young....God bless and please dont forget to b kind to each other...good karma so important xx😇🥰😎
Why some people put they god everywhere, she was just a awesome gift for us, it's all. What do you think about uranium 235 (used for nuclear bomb)? a gift from your god?
Great to see Richard on such a beautiful piano. The sound was gorgeous and Richard's vocals were great too. What a superb musician and largely responsible for creating the Carpenter sound, which is like no other.
Listening to this in 2024. I don't even know if the Carpenters were still alive when I was born. Their songs became a recent fave for me when I first heard _Love Me For What I Am_ and _Yesterday Once More._ Their songs are timeless, still relatable even decades after, but what I love the most is listening to Karen Carpenter's voice. It's cool and calming, unique and might be one of the best voices I have ever heard. I'm thankful for their songs - a wonderful timeless legacy indeed.
Oh, my Lord, what a desperate and dramatic cry for love is this song !!! Poor Karen, may you rest in peace, you look such a beautiful soul, I'd dare say that there was no space for a pure heart like you, you left a trail of infinity behind you, rest in peace, dear soul and may your crave for infinity be filled by God's infinite love !!!! Thank you for the music you have left behind for us to enjoy the bitterness of your inner and such dramatic feelings!!!
Without a doubt, my favourite Carpenter song. “Goodbye to love”. Such a true reflection of life. And who knows?Maybe a true reflection of Karen’s life to. Maybe that why she sang the song with such passion and feeling. RIP Karen,
It was quite controversial at the time, having a "fuzzed" rock guitar interlude and ending to a soft melodic song. But hard to imagine the song without it now
You have to go back to when the song was written and recorded, late 1971 or early 1972. The song was a radio hit for most of the summer of 1972. They were playing something like 350 concert dates per year then and neither of them had time for anything else.
There is no other female artist that I know in history that can probably outshine her especially when you read about her going into a studio in performing a song perfectly done the first time Just Nails it every time
I grew up listening to the Carpenters. My mom was a fan (nearly same age as Karen) so I knew all the Carpenters song. God bless her and God bless my mom, both in Heaven.
Richard Carpenter spoke about how he received so much grief from fans, because of the Tony Peluso guitar solo. Fans thought he was betraying their musical style by putting in a guitar that sounded like hard rock. Of course, history has vindicated Richard, and puts his brilliance on display, as he went against expectations to create a brilliant song. Tony Peluso credited this as the first power ballad that used a fuzz guitar solo, and was an inspiration for power ballads to follow. Also, "Some Adult Contemporary radio stations refused to play the song because of the guitar solo, which probably kept it from reaching No.1" (Udiscovermusic, July 15, 2020).
As someone who said goodbye to love many years ago, I've always felt the "fuzz guitar" solo was a perfect expression of the sadness, anger, frustration, loneliness and bitterness I felt when I had to admit I couldn't try anymore for that special someone. I'm 78 now and nearing the end. Maybe that is why I always felt Karen was singing to me and knew how I felt,
Crystalline tonal beauty, perfect enunciation, wonderful lyric and melodic perfection. I'd be happy to die (slowly) to this song. Thank you Karen C. To me, you were perfect.
This song as I remember it was released when the Carpenters knew they were very successful with the "We only Begun song". The words really spoke my heart when I was alone in a foreign country , no relatives, just finished university not many good friends. Now looking back it is still a great song because it really describes Karen herself. Had she found someone she might not have become so depressed and lonely in the end.
What makes this song so incredible, at least for me, is the combination of Karen Carpenter's unique and amazing voice and sincere delivery, the poignant and devastating lyrics, and two brilliant guitar solos. - Absolutely groundbreaking and cannot be duplicated or surpassed!
2 "Brilliant" guitar solos, are you SERIOUS??! 🤔 His guitar tone is Terrible, & his vibrato is practically Non-existent! I've been listening to ALL the famous & Non famous guitarists (And their guitar solos) since the mid 70's, and that's easily one of the WORST guitar solos I've EVER heard! 🎸😝👎🏼🤦♂️
Today February 4, is the anniversary of her death. I'm so glad she left behind her music as proof. Otherwise, who would ever believe that such a beautiful soul ever existed?
one of my favorite guitar solos to just get blown away. probably the first guitar solo I noticed as a kid (10 yoa). Played my parents LP over and over just for that song. BTW yes I know there is a lot of great music by them but for me, they can't top this song.
I'm glad this is actually the STUDIO recording, although it might APPEAR to be "Live". - I ALWAYS prefer the perfected studio versions over live recordings, and this is one of my favorite songs of all time. ALL TIME.
Peluso channels Beck. And the bassist, when you get that quick look, reminds you of Squiggy. The Carpenters book written with Richard is out now. It's terrific. Also has a wonderful discography with variations at the end. Well worth the price.
we all love you karen!!!! there will be a tomorrow. you will not have empty and lonely days.. you will no longer need to say goodbye to love. you alreadyhave the love you searched for.
Tony Out shines Karen and Wins the Song over!!! What a Solo and then the outro is EPIC!!! Its one of the finest Solos I have ever heard. But I am only 48... lol So I may have missed a few. Suggestions?

Close your eyes and listen to this incredible voice. It will bring tears to your eyes. She was a gift to the world.
One of the best , with her majical voice
Here I am...2022.

Favorite female singer from the 70's to 2021!!
Great fuzzy solo. Epic. Iconic. Good call Richard Carpenter.
What I really am amazed of her is her breathing technique, goinf through long sentences with ease.
She could take that Low OCTIVE in he voice and Modulate it anywhere she wanted it .....I Believe, She said once "THE CASH IS IN THE BASEMENT,BABY!"
