  • In the first documentary from the Brush Up team, Luiza Vieira goes Vice style as she tags along University Nevada Reno classmate Kenny Bissett on a homecoming trip to nearby, but also very distant, Sun Valley, Nevada, which has been called the biggest trailer park in the world, and much worse.

My grandfather was born and raised in this area. He raised his children, lived and died there, just as his father did before him. Just as most of his children that still live there are doing to this day. They are all great people, survivors, they know the value of a life well lived, even though they never had much money. I still miss Sun Valley, and what it was to me as a child, to this day. I wish I could go back to see my family there more often.

In my opinion this documentary was poorly done. I felt embarrassed for you. First of all, never approach someone by putting a camera in their face. Of course the man wanted to see some ID. How would you react to strangers approaching you on your property with a video camera pointed at you? Secondly, your questions were not well thought out. What was your purpose in making this documentary? I felt you both (especially the girl) were disrespectful and snobbish is how you spoke to these people.
To the girl, when you filmed the home with the golf cart and boat, why did you feel the need to judge them and determine the boat and golf cart were things they did not need? If you were in an expensive neighborhood would you also assume a boat and golf cart were junk?
You both need more experience in the real world. And don't assume that just because you judge someone to be poor that automatically makes them unhappy or beneath you.

I was born and raised till the age of 12 in Sun Valley. It was a violent place at times, it was also wonderful to just wander around the valley in our off time, explore everything. It has its own unique beauty that blends with the poverty, and it does have this timeless quality to it, things there seem to almost be frozen in time. Its a comforting thing in a way, at the same time, no forward motion means things dont get any better either. I miss it and stlill think of it often. The perfectly blue sky, against the desert sands and mountains. The breeze was great, and the sun seemed so much brighter there. I was just a kid when I lived there, so my memory of the Valley is through a kids eyes. I wish more people would post video of it. I would love for someone to get footage of the whole Valley, just cruising around all day.

Kristi, I agree I lived in Sun Valley from the time I was 7 years old to the time I was 18. The way this documentary was doesn't reflect the neighborhoods of my youth in its entirety. Sure the neighborhood was poor but there are many good people who live there.

I am Canadian and I was taught never to ask to see the inside of a person's home and ask first before you turn on a camera. There is people that escaped a bad situation and the last thing they want is to be found. If you show a person respect they will , in most cases, show it back. I live in a small bachelor apartment and my sources of entertainment is books and television. I saved for a long time to get a nice tv. Is she going to say I don't need it? I don't go to movies or concerts, so that is my entertainment. I think a lot of privileged brats need to spend part of their time volunteering in homeless shelters and food banks to find out how other people get by and learn a little respect.

She went there wanting it to be the worst & when it wasn't she tried to point out other bs like items sitting out in the yard, swing sets, & lawn decor & called the ppl living there hoarders. She had a story in her head that she wanted to tell rather than just showing up and documenting the reality of the situation. Typical shit they do in journalism now a days so I can't fully blame her for following suit but still. There was still very much a story there that could've been told and shared & very much loved by viewers but she was too "tunnel vision" to even see it. Ugh, man. I haven't been this heated in awhile. This girl triggered tf out of me lol. She acted like her friend was taking her to some super shady & questionable zoo where she could gawk at them while she took footage to later manipulate and disrespect the residents with for shock value. It made me sick. I'll never understand why wealthier ppl look at ppl with less money as if they're a diff species of human. We are all the exact same, just some have money & privelage, & others gotta live without those things

Yes, I agree. They came into Sun Valley to do their documentary with the idea that Sun Valley is a vile community. And this young man who is from here puts the area and the people down. This is where his parents raised him. This is where they got their start, and later sent him to college. He is part of the American dream and he doesn't get it. Why would he make this young girl think just because people live in Sun Valley, they live in dirty houses? He needs a hard flick on his noggin.

I generally avoid negativity in posting, but this young lady proves
that schools are not teaching the basics: Manners, Politeness and
Proper Introduction. Before you attempt any more documentaries -watch
some and learn how to introduce yourself to gain trust or get a sales
job so you can learn how to treat people with respect. You really
think its OK to thrust a camera into someone’s face, spew the word
“Documentary,” and think you have the right to get all up in
their business - not in the US! For all that Gentleman knows, you
could be there with the camera to document what equipment you are
planning to cart-off when you come back to break in... and that
remark about “all this stuff,” shows you have no “GAME!”
Because you would have recognized a “Hustler” when you saw one.
Please - put down the camera for a while and learn some respect and
    manners…?

At no point did I get the feeling that you were being observant to the environment you placed yourself in. I felt that you shot what you wanted to see and nothing else. Why didn't you spend more time filming at the park? Why didn't you do interviews at the post office or small shopping mall? What is the Economy of the town? I feel that you went there to shot exactly the rumors you had heard of prior to your journey.

If that's what you want to even call this poor excuse for a off the cuff, shitty student film. It's not a trailer park.
Sun Valley is the world's largest Mobile Home town. Not a trailer park. Most lots of land is 1/3 acre or larger. Land is owned with the Mobile or Manufactured home, so there is a lot of space between you and your neighbors. But Sun Valley has the best neighbors. Sun Valley is quiet, rural, but close to everything. The community is nestled in a small valley. When you purchase a Manufactured home with land here, you are buying a large lot. Most importantly, No HOA!.
NOT like the track housing with a short driveway that cannot be utilized, no parking on the streets, and you can hear your neighbors tv and you can see your neighbors recipes as they are cooking as you can see in their kitchen in the newer housing developments.
Especially during this coronavirus lockdown, Sun Valley is healthy as there is a big yard to be outside in , plant a garden , have a horse or chickens if you want. and the sunrises are spectacular in this tiny valley.

Let me paint you a picture: It was common for there to be trash all over the living room with fly traps and random dirty mattresses with no bedding. Drugs on the kitchen table were normal too. Not every house of course. I have plenty of family and friends that still live there and they keep their homes pretty tidy and upgraded. It’s still more common to see this description in mobile home parks than elsewhere for some reason.

WOW some of these comments are rough this girl is probably maybe 20 years old and this is her first documentary this is sad to see how people think about our youth. Of course on the other hand these people might be some of the ones that live in this place called Sun Valley and were offended.

Blueberry man said he had only been there a few months & it looked more like a few centuries. 😂😂I'm born & raised in Reno & U would NEVER live in SCUM VALLEY!! Hang out at 7-11 or Hobeys & you will see a little of every bit of scum, druggies, homeless! To be fair, since it was 2015 when you did this video, there are much nicer track homes, alot more businesses for jobs. The highway name will never change though & I'm shocked Kenny didn't tell you it's Hiway 666. NO JOKE!!😝😝😲😨😨😨

Lots of judgement in the comments, that's the world today I guess. Most people don't think about how good they have it and don't realize America has the biggest income inequality in the world!
This was obviously someone's first documentary they ever made so it was cool to see them go through it and share it all

People with cameras exposing their own lack while trying desperately to convince themselves it's the people they mock with the problem. D for quality of concept and delivery, but A- for unwittingly putting the actual human condition (their own poverty of character and insight) on film.

This had the potential, but ultimately it is terrible. The 'documentary' (I use the term loosely) rests entirely on the supposed childhood experience of the male documentary maker, who has clearly not been here in years & never really fit in with the locals anyway, the locals who don't even remember him or his family. As for the female one, well, she doesn't seem to know her arse from her lens cap, full stop. Terribly made, Terribly filmed, Terribly thought out - it's just terrible on every front.

Actually living in a Trailer Park isn't a bad thing as some like to make it out to be.. Its the same equivalent of living in a Condo.. You pay maintenance fee, plus utilities and sometimes the rental of the Trailer.. All of which you do when renting or owning a Condo..

whyputaname, This is very sad why anybody has to live in these deplorable conditions. There is nothing wrong in living in a mobile home, providing the park is well maintained and so is the mobile home. There are mobile homes in Florida, double wide and they are beautiful. You would die if you saw them. The parks are beautiful as well. The problem is the dam park rents are way to high every where in Florida. The rent's are outrageous. $550.00-$850.00 a month. there should be laws to protect greedy landlords from ripping people off.
