  • The turquoise waters of Hatta Dam provide a calm respite just 90 minutes away from the buzzing city of Dubai. Located near Hatta Fort Hotel and the popular outdoor activity centre Hatta Wadi Hub, this body of water is surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Hajar range, a stark contrast to the desert sands you’ll pass en route to Hatta.
The spot is especially popular in the cooler winter months, and also has activities for children (they'll be delighted by the ducks by the water), but do bear in mind that there's a rather steep hill between the car park and the water's edge.
You can drive your car along the water’s edge, hike between photo stops and spend some time soaking up the natural beauty of the mountainous area around the dam. The best way to take in the views is directly from the water; Hatta Kayak offers rental services starting at AED60 for kayaks, canoes, paddle-boating and more, so you can paddle your way across the smooth waters (note that you can't bring your own equipment, and must use gear from Hatta Kayak).
While there, don't miss another striking feature - a large mural overlooking the water commemorates the UAE's founding fathers, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
Many people adventuring in Hatta Dam will bring food and enjoy a wilderness picnic, or even a barbeque at one of the area’s dedicated DIY barbeque facilities - pick up supplies from local grocery stores, or from Dubai's BBQ masters. Hatta also has plenty of restaurants, cafes and food trucks; try Al Hajarain Restaurant just up the road, or the Mountain Burger food truck.
There are also great foodie options at Hatta Fort Hotel, including Jeema for fine dining, or Café Gazebo for more casual bites. The hotel is also one of the best places to stay in Hatta - although more adventurous types can try camping or glamping, with Sedr Trailers very close to Hatta Dam.
Another option is to book a space at many of the local farms, which offer a range of accommodation from traditional stone houses to luxury lodges with all mod-cons. Hatta Valley Lodge and Alberi Lodge are the closest to Hatta Dam, but there are plenty more choices nearby.
The best time to visit Hatta Dam is between autumn and spring, when the weather is cooler, with average highs of 22C and average lows of 16C in January. Note that because Hatta is in the mountains, it is generally a few degrees cooler than the city of Dubai.
In the winter months there is an increased (though still low) chance of rain and storms, which may affect conditions in Hatta, as well as visibility, so check the weather forecast before making a trip. Some Hatta activities may not go ahead during bad weather.
Note that while kayaking at Hatta Dam remains open during the summer, many of Hatta’s other attractions close to visitors for the summer, from mid to late May to September or October. If you’re planning a visit around the start or end of the summer closure period, please get in touch with the attractions to confirm their opening dates.
While limited public transport options are available, the best way to reach Hatta Dam is by car - consider renting one for your Hatta trip, if you won’t have one already. Alternatively, you can book a fully guided Hatta tour with providers such as Platinum Heritage.
If you’re driving from Dubai, the E44 highway goes all the way to Hatta, but the best route for you will depend on your starting point, as well as traffic conditions on the day. You can use Google Maps to get a preview of your trip.
