I never got promoted on the job. I got promoted by moving to the next jobs. I found it is way easier to move up by moving around. Be loyal to your own development rather than to the employer - that’s my lesson.

Absolutely right. You can get the level you're looking for by moving to other companies. When the other company ask you for why changing jobs, is there the opportunity to explain that you're looking for to grow your career. It's rare to see somebody changing jobs to move just laterally.

Yup. Take matters into our own hands. In a lot of places you will always be associated with your previous role rather than the one you are in currently. Can be best just to go in at a higher level.

Improve yourself and look for another job, and get a fresh start. Once they have passed you over, you will from now on be seen as less desirable and make the person that passed you over will feel uncomfortable with your continued presence. Don't let your work decline, don't disrespect yourself by becoming a poor producer. Improve while you seek another opportunity, be positive

She's 100% right you take those qualities with you at that new position and a $20,000.00 pay increase for the same position. Loyalty doesn't exist anymore that's just branding for companies to keep customers, don't listen to what others think about your work. If you know your works good someone else will find it worth the value. Being a people pleaser does nothing for you in career growth you have to be selfish with hour career to be successful. Anyone who tells you differently is a narcissistic or is a female and gets jobs handed to them based on value they were born with.

I absolutely agree with you. I've given years of loyalty to my current employer to be passed over for a promotion, while other people doing half the quality work that I do, have gotten a promotion.

It’s hard sometimes when you are working day and night to make things work but it all goes down the gutter when you don’t get promoted for those deeds.
Well it’s extreme to say that it went to the gutter because the learning curve was high for me and I feel confident but it remains unrecognized by the leadership.
It’s just that my motivation is slowly drying up and my confidence at work hasn’t been up since.
Feels like I need a change

I like this comment because it reminds me of something I heard in a TED talk. Oftentimes, we work hard and hope our boss will simply notice. But, if we pay attention to other successful partners, we’ll notice they’ve “casually” chatted with their boss to talk about a big win, or a project they tackled. And they do it often enough that the manager, when thinking of promotions, identifies that person as someone qualified. Women and minorities often don’t do this because they think of it as bragging but it seems a necessary task. Good luck! You’ll get the next one!!

After giving most of your energies to provide quality and quantity work to leadership, creating a big impact in the organization and you don't get that promotion, definitely is time to move on and find another company that can put the value on you that you deserve. This might sound emotional, but it's not. If they don't give you consistent feedback, so you can take actions to take that promotion next year, then there is a problem of trust. Companies talk a lot about "CORE VALUES", one of them is "TRUST", But if it happens that they cannot give you clear and honest feedback to take proper actions, all that narrative falls appart.

Indeed, I'm dealing with favitosim, nepotism, and tribalism all of over the work place. One thing, that really helped is, of course, putting in the hours, hard work, and quality, but, “48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene” is a must in the corporate world.
After reading that book, literary everything came crystal clear. The power dynamics, the inner cycles, and the insecurities all showed. Thus, I was able to plan moves strategically.

Problem #3 There’s too much crap management in the world, especially at the front line level, to take advice at your level at face value. Especially if there’s an agenda against your current manager. Who you work for makes a world of difference in these matters.

I resigned after getting passed over to retain my junior in the company.
It's hard to have a clear vision when the selection of a supervisor role lacks transparency and feels arbitrary. They are handed over to retain people as counter offer. I get supervisors from other teams, departments, and it's a revolving door. I keep on adjusting to new leadership every several months and they do not have helpful feedback given they have little knowledge of my history.

Employers don't promote people as a reward for doing a good job, or working extremely hard or anything else. They promote people because they need someone to move into that management position. There's a lot of arguments against internal promotion - not least that it can breed huge resentment amongst other staff but also the person being promoted is unknown in that role and they'll have to backfill the role they were in. It doesn't make sense.
My advice. Just leave for a better role. You can either sit there waiting for "better luck next time" or just go next month to a better role with a company that looks pretty much like the one you're in today.

Be loyal to yourself not to a company! If no promotion find another job and give notice you are leaving! Most jobs give promotions to people that are their favorites and those people are usually second rate workers! It's a slap in the face just take your skills elsewhere!

Not getting reliable feedback, putting one in a position where they could carry those traits forward into a new job based on a lack of feedback, feels like a corporate delaying tactic to me. Point 1 & 2 do not synergize well in this regard.

Shouldn't it be intuitive that most people want to move up or grow in an organization if they've been there for a while? Why do I need to spell it out for a manager at an elementary level? After all, they have applied for promotions too. Plus applying for promotions should be evidence that a person is interested.

I applied for an exec director position with a nonprofit and was pushed by the current e.d. and board to apply. I was afraid to but applied and still didnt get it. They asked if I would leave and want me to stay. But that is the only position I can move to and I dont make very much. I have 6 kids and a disabled husband. Should I stay just because they think Im good in the position Im in?

The funniest one is when you get passed over for promotion by a young unskilled colleague, despite you having a management degree. The guy was useless and they actually thought I would put up with him being my line manager. Nope, bye bye. You want to play politics holding back those who would actually perform in a management role? Well good luck, your business wont be here in a few years time lol. I didnt even hand in my notice or train a replacement on the systems I had made, I just got up and walked. I left them up shit street lmao.
