2000hp 266mph BIG RED 1969 Camaro. The Greatest Pro Touring Car Ever Built?

- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2024
- This may very well be one of the most legendary car builds of all time. That's a big claim... but backing it up is 2000 horsepower, a base Veyron-crushing top speed of 266mph, countless race wins over the past few decades, and a rebirth from a fire that could have ended it completely. Hold onto your keyboards, this is a story for the times.

What would you do 251MPH in?
Well I'm already in hyperspeed soooo...
My beat up Cobra. It will either do it with ease and throw a tail light, or try to drift to a certain direction.
A Bmw e31, long nose grand touring car would be amazing with over 1000 hrspers
A reliant robin.
Koenigsegg Agera Rs
Hands down, the baddest Camaro of all-time...a true legend.
Hell yes!!!!!!!!!
I have the mag with it on the cover! And this car is the one I blame for my love affair with first gen Camaros. I restored a 67, 68 and 69 and unfortunately sold them all. Coming up on my 69th bday and I’m buying one last 69 Camaro to celebrate and unlike the others it’s already pretty well complete, just needs one additional gauge and a roll cage with seats and harnesses and possible a nos setup to low 9’s and some road racing. Yahoo!!!!
I've seen some amazing builds but this thing is next level. Most impressive is how clever they were in making it adaptable to different types of racing. And it's got a damn blow through carb!
this crew is so civilized in explaining the car..each one speaking their own part so diligently and not interfering in each other's talk
You can tell they make a great team
This is how mature, professional adults conduct themselves.
And no profanity either, that's refreshing
No Libtards here ...😁🐻🇺🇸
Their called grownups! =)
This car truly is an icon to car building. I grew up reading an article here and there, now look at how much inspiration she has given to so many. I'm looking forward to seeing what she can contribute over the next 20 years.
True legend right here. My favorite thing about this car is how it is really fast, but it also turns.
Turning is an underrated but important feature.
TheHoonigans and so is braking !
TheHoonigans and so is braking !
Nice ride for sure. But still can't beat the 296 mph Ford GT Texas Mile
yes!!
I remember when Big Red was featured for the first time in Hot Rod back in the day. Totally awesome icon!
I still have that issue...
So do I ..things have come on since ...big wow
I atill have that magazine. Superbly written story. Been following these guys ever since.
Yes sir. You never forget Big Red.
Didn't the author of that article state something like 'at 7k rpm in top gear, I couldn't even hear my own scream'?!? I love Big Red.
One of the most badass legendary cars of all time, been following its evolution since the 80’s. 👍🏻
I remember seeing it once in person awesome car
But is still bows to the almighty MK2 Ford GT 300mph Texas mile world record
Having that insane of a build but keeping it somewhat modular so they can swap back and forth between setups just blows my mind. This thing is a work of functional art. And a 4 month rebuild from fire to raceday is just batshit crazy 😂
“The rain gutters keep it looking stock” 😂
Yeah don't you think it looks like it came of the assembly line? Looks totally stock to me lol.
Im a man, and I have a better chance of getting myself pregnant than building something this amazing
NOW THAT'S FUNNY...FLAIRS !!!
@@coolguys5318 TIME TOO PLAY THE LOTTERY...I'M IN...HAHA !!!
And he wasn't joking when he said that 🤣
Been following this build since I was a little kid! This beast is responsible for getting me into Chevy Muscle! I use to dream about building something like this with my dad and now with my son! I love how humble he is! Makes the car that much better!
so much variety and without modern control like Holley EFI, AEM Infinity, MoTec or Haltech Elite just old school mechanical systems *mindblown*
I do all the electrical systems on Big Red! The sheer number of different combinations we run was quiet a challenge. On the road race set up we run a Holley Dominator EFI with an MSD Grid ignition and Racepak for data logging the stuff we don't get on the Holley box ( EGT'S and O2's for each cylinder). When we land speed race and don't have to fit in to the classic class we run the Holley Dominator EFI with Holley coil near plug set up and still use the Racepak for data. In the set up you see in the video the motor is all mechanical but we still use the Holley Dominator and Racepak for data logging.
Jack Nickerson you guys have some amazing talent to come up with all that. Truly amazing car
@@jacknickerson6985 adapt and overcome, you guys are amazing at creating an allround platform.
Maximus Gameplay my brain hurts thinking how they do it
Thanks for your kind words!
198mph average over 96 miles... Did I just hear this correctly?!?!?!?!?
A Abra
That's only a 30 minute drive
Yes you did. That is why Big Red is the most legendary car build of all time. Every gearhead should know the story of Big Red. Tell your friends.
@@BobbyOfEarth Who's talking about it "as a society based on money"? Talking about car builds not how much money they were sold for.
@@BobbyOfEarth Now you've moved onto Bonneville cars, another completely unrelated topic. Look at the name of the video.
...and sorry if me pointing out that you were talking out your ass offended you. Take it as a learning experience to pay attention.
@@BobbyOfEarth Who gives 1, 2, or 50 flying fucks about any of that banter you just went off about. You're shifting the focus from this awesome car, and letting your ADHD take over that no one gives 51 flying fucks about!
Big red is an absolute legend... I remember my dad showing me stuff about it back when I was like 10. Definitely the coolest pro touring Camaro ever
It’s the car that started the pro touring trend.
Little Mouse I know but since then, there have been thousands and it’s still the coolest(and fastest)😂
I remember this car from the 1988 Silver State Classic video I bought on VHS back in the day! It was doing 200 MPH + and was simply awesome!! This was well before twin-turbo big blocks/small-blocks became the norm.
I grinned from the time that I got the notification to the end of the video. I’ve been following BRC since the early 90’s. She’s a bad beash.
2k-hp and then I heard him say "blow through carb" LOL what the actual fuck
I remember the hot rod magazine cover in 1987. It influenced me to get my own 69 Camaro. The Legend!
I remember seeing BIG RED parked on Foothill Blvd in Sylmar, California when I lived in the San Fernando Valley in the early 90's. It was already a legend. I'm happy to see BIG RED is still alive and well.
Just..... DAMN! That Camaro is WILD! 🔥
Also, Hi Drew 💜
Seriously though! Insane. 👋
That car for me is like ultimate weapon! Genius engineering creating mechanical superiority! Often copied, but never duplicated! Mad respect to all the fine ppl involved in that piece of rolling art!
This car influenced me to put a big block in my camaro instead of the typical LS, been following this car for a couple years. Awesome to see it on Hoonigan
Ls are better than the old generation small block but nothing beet the old generation big block
@@anthonylyrette7399 other than a big ls
This car has inspired so many.
@@LT3Fluffy big ls dont exist
@@anthonylyrette7399 I didn't know that 454 was small
I remember seeing this as a young teenager in hot rod magazine 😍 this car blew my mind and still is the archetype build I hold all others against. Hope to see this dream car one day in cali 🙏🏽
Shouldn't Chase be working on tri5 right now?
There are many hours in the day.
@@TheHoonigans sweet. Looking forward to the content
I've heard he's photoshopped himself without the beard.... Motivation John, use that
John was the odd one out in this Build Biology. The guests were all cleanly shaven!. LOL
Yeah Blasphemi has been dialed in while the tri5 is going to be a fresh build, unless roadkill magic strikes I can't see tri5 winning, will be sad to see the beard go
Big Red has been a legend since the 1980s. I remember reading about Dan and the crew back then and they were the Kings.
I am glad to see future generations getting to see Big Red and the possibilities that can be achieved.
I've met RJ 3 times : Silver State Classic, and twice at SEMA, and he's the friendliest, most approachable nice guy you'll ever meet . When you see this car in person, you instantly fall in love with it .
Truly a legend. No car that can do what big red does! Driver and the crew is just as phenomenal as the car! Humble group!!! Cheering for big red to hit 300 mph!!!!
So awesome to see this car again... I remember reading an article on it... I think it was Hot Rod mag in the 90's... I have been hooked on pro touring ever since
Been following Big Red for many years. It is far and away the coolest Camaro of all time. Thanks for a good look at it.
This car shaped my love of all things automotive related!!
Still have the car craft and hotrod magazines she was first in!!! Thank you for the build break down on this beautiful monster of a car!!! Love from Nebraska!
I'm appreciating the lack of electronics in this car! As a young mechanic who's entering into a world where everything is computer controlled, I love this!
Badass Camaro. Nice to see the old timers still kickin
What an Epic project car! Been working on the same car for 30+ years, known for starting pro touring, competing in all kinds of different racing events and doing well in everything! Very impressive gentleman!
There's something about red with white stripes that's just so appealing!
Dude i see you on every single video i watch. You must sit on youtube all day everyday lol
But if you’re on all the same videos wouldn’t that mean you do the same?
Ehhhhhhhh hehe it’s always appealing I need to look good at 260 mph don’t i😂😂😂😂
Yes there sure is, always thought starskys ford gran Torino looked well.
They say you should never meet your hero's But after your fine job at showing me Big Red One I can honestly say it is everything I have always thought it was, and much much more. My thanks to you for asking AJ for access and asking him and his crew the questions I would have asked. As a builder myself I look at this legend and realize how amazing it is that they are still pushing the envelope over 30 years later.
Amazing that this can be done with no fuel injection and electronics (less monitoring) in what would be considered a brick in a wind tunnel (stock Z28)...... a truly amazing accomplishment.
83alpinab9 yes it is thank you
The engineering is absolutely amazing in that car
BIG RED!!!!! As soon as i read the notification, I had to click! This car is a legend! Hoonicorn who?
I mean they’re built to be different cars but I definitely agree. Big red has competed in tons of different types of races and has won basically all of them, hoonicorn is sorta just a drifty tire smoking gymkhana thing
I remember writing an article about this car like 10 years ago, when it was making ONLY 1000hp, which at the time seemd crazy, and here it is, twice as powerful! The dopest pro-touring build there is for sure.
I remember when they first started running this beautiful beast!!
Kept up with them with magazines back then, and also on cable as we entered the 90's.
I remember in one magazine article, they mentioned that the car had so much torque, that shifting from 3rd to 4th gear at 130- 140 mph, the car would still break traction!
Awesome!!
It's most impressive how the car has always been crazy fast for the time.
Iv been following this car for years these guys are my heroes. I love the rear tail
When I saw that thumbnail I knew I had to watch it immediately and leave a thumbs up before watching. Please bring more old school legends to the show
Making up for aerodynamics " mainly with horsepower " 😁
Gearhead talk got to love it! Worst thing is there right, all steal heavy Chevy.
If you put enough horsepower on it, even a brick will break Mach 1.
Thats... the American way 😉
@@torque-ej4nu American way is fine as long as you don't need to go round corners.
@@jhint1929 not entirely true as that Camaro corners just fine
Coolest thing about this car is it's old school knowledge to bypass modern restrictions. great video and history of this car and a BIG thank to those that built it.
Yes the legend of the Big Red Camaro! So stoked to see this thing on Build Bio 🔥🔥🔥🏁
Stoked to have it on!
I read an article in a magazine almost 20 years ago about this car. It was a great article about a great car because I still remember reading it. This car was the in my eyes the definition of bad ass and still is.
Building a camaro like this is 100% on my bucket list
I want my 79 Monte Carlo like this!!!
I think I'd rather have a hopped up sixties classic that I can drive on the streets! Maybe six hundred horsies and a four speed!! I'd drive it until the Judge says I have to sell it!!
As a massive motorsports fan from NZ. Thank you to the team for this car, this build. Wow, wow and wow. Good luck for the future.
That camaro looks NUTS!! Cant believe it hit 266mph.
But why does it say 251?? He clearly says 266 and 258 at Bonneville.
bonz424 Was reading through the comments for this as well. Doesn’t match either of the numbers he says in the video.
bonz424 251 standing mile
266 standing 1.5 mile
258 Bonneville
Those are our current top speeds at three different events
I'm a Ford guy, but I gotta say 69 was the best year for muscle cars all around. Between the mustang, camaro, and charger. 3 of the best. Hands down. This thing is absolutely insane.
Eat your heart out Da Vinci, this IS the greatest work of art! When they put it up, holy sh!t the amount of work and thought put into this. The various layouts and settings is incredible! Seriously amazing. Without a doubt, a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing this.
What an idiotic comment to post online.
Thanks so much for featuring this car, it truly is a icon of the automotive world!! Epic machine !!!
Big Red was running Silver State back in the day, would go 220 back then N/A with a big block. Great car, they've done it all!
I saw that race back then!!!!!! You left first that day and your dad started 4th or 5th in his ZR-1 white corvette!!!!!! What a freaking BEAST!!!!!!! Love that BIG RED is still in the game!!!!!!!!!! That car is amazing!!!!!!!
266 MP/H ? thats 428 KM/H !!! what ? from a 60s muscle car , jaw just dropped to the floor.
Captain MufDyven love V8 supercar series, I’m not a muscle car fan . But 400+ km/h deserves respect in any form . Rally is my real passion .
Dude it's not a "60's muscle car." It's a lot more like a MUCH higher horsepower stock car or trans am car with a '69 Camaro body on top. Yes there are many more challenges getting that shape to go that fast as opposed to say an 80's or 90's F-body. Still an AMAZING car and so cool to see it still running strong after all these years.
It was doing 220 mph in the 80's.
I reckon you never read Hot Rod Magazine Jean....
Chevy where way ahead, ford and Chrysler learnt a lot from GM ford had there a side valve flat top V8 in 1918 and chevy had an overhead cam V8
Working in engineering after getting out of the Air Force, the modularity and multiple configuration ms that are all easily swappable blows my mind!
That thing is bananas! I love it.
B-A-N-A-N-A-S
I’d say closer to a nice ripe passion fruit
THIS car is what happens when ya have guys that TRULLY know how to set up a car Old School . WOW Nicely done Crew .
These guys are the real deal. Very serious speed machine/build here.
I have grown up with this car! Absolute Legend! Great review of the Icon!
Thank you for this feature.
Dang, I remember RJ as a kid, racing the Silver State Classic with his dad. I saw a VHS tape of it back in the early 1990's! Awesome to see this car is still active!
Wow, I did not realize that this car was still around and "the shit" and started the pro touring cars!
SO cool to see this legendary car looking so good and running so strong after all these years.
The Hoonigans uploaded: *something sweeeet* 😍
Been a fan since the Silver State Challenge 30 years ago. Big block power-original body lines-red-it's the perfect Camaro. Keep killin' 'em,RJ!!🙂
Glad big red came on the show probably the best build biology yet!
Given its performance and its provenance, of all the cars showcased on Hoonigan, THIS has to be the one to win top honors.
This Camaro is just amazing hearing the sound of it gives me goosebumps I can't imagine what I would do seeing this in real life.
I seen it in Laughlin and I was surprised, it was awesome back when it was power by a 540 in motor
I smiled from start till the end of the video.Nasty, fast, beautiful, insanely powerfull and snarling-that's how i describe this wild beast.Very impressive and amazing build.
Its amazing the amount of engineering involved. I wish I new 1/2 of the knowledge
The time, money and commitment into this car is amazing.
Quality through and through. What tires could withstand such speed ? Amazing.
Race cars do special things to my man bits.
This is the second time I’ve watched this same clip in the last few months.thats how nice I think this car is and so much innovation and build quality in one vehicle. Fantastic guys
Im a man, and I have a better chance of getting myself pregnant than building something this amazing
when you get pregnant, you atleast look like the sick hood bulge on this thing
You are halair...bro...
Dead Leg Media dont ever underestimate yourself bro I know it takes alot of planning a lot of money too and most of all desires. I'm building a chevelle to run the Texas mile
Dead Leg Media don't be so sure bro I'm building a chevelle, very soon ill be going to chatsworth to see Tom Nelson and discuss him building me 2500 hp engine I know I have to finish redesigning my frame and chassis for the speed I wish to obtain, I know the engine will cost me right around 50 grand then I have to buy the transmission , but like I say it just takes money and a little brains, speed is addictive I just hope I don't kill myself at speed, never give up on your dreams you just never know what luck and the future holds for you
Arnold Schwarzenegger got pregnant in the movie junior...
It's amazing what hard work, money, and determination can achieve. Whole lot of car there.
Four months from burnt down to brand new?! That is unreal!
Epic old school style racecar engineering that works is the best way to make almost any car look amazing. I dig it
Finally! Good to see that legend on the show.
I read about this car in the 80s. It was majorly impressive back then that it averaged 200mph in a road race, and it’s still impressive now. Remembering that article just now, led me to search for a video on it over 30 years later.
" Muscle beats import every time!"

Nothing can beat a big turbo civic
If built correctly.
@@shaloon64 lel

Yeah we see so many civics making 2000hp or racing on Street Outlaws, or PINKS or big league sanctioned drag racing or open road racing....
Honestly guys, out of all the cars you have showed. This one car is the most iconic, coolest car yet. In my book it will be hard to ever beat this car. Big Red changed the car world for ever. They made pro touring cool
Everything on this car is absolutely bonkers insane... Including that massive tumor hood cowl thing... It looks like a really big zit about to burst with 2000Hp 😂
Massive tumor 😂

The hood is the only thing I don't like. To each their own. Bad ass car though.

Absolutely incredible machine! Thank you for sharing gents! 👍
I seen many videos on supercars hooked up car drag cars, but none was beautifully put together with heart like this one good job guys.

Nope! Get yo learn on.

Yes, yes it is. lol That car started what is the current standard for classic muscle.
Baddest Camaro for 25 years
No because it's just a boomers wet dream
Mark and Tim--not your typical mad scientists. The math, the versatility of this car, it's just staggering! Hats off for this amazing machine.
Didnt know about the fire, hopefully she is on the road as long as gas is available. Loved that car since reading about it in high school and watching it back in the early RUclips days 😉
It runs on alcohol so as long as corn exists it's good to go
I wouldn’t be super surprised to see that guys son running Big Red in an all electric version at some point to start beating some electric car records.
Thank you sooooo much for not allowing those interruptive commercial inserts !!!!
I still have old late 80s and early 90s VHS tapes with this car racing Testarossas, Porsches and Panteras back in the day! I loved how they would show up to race the exotic cars; people would laugh, until they saw it run! No more laughing.
When I saw the car after the fire I puked then cried then puked some more and dude said they were lucky the damage wasn't too bad!!

Nobody can do it better than you guys in the states I just love your cars . Respect ✊ from the uk.
I remember when they first raced it against the Ferrari s. The Ferrari boys laughed at it. I think the owners son ( the one that was in this video ) was only 19 when he drove it.
It's true. The Ferrari Boys laughed, until they cried.
They were laughing at the expense
@@josholiver3539 - Ferrari has done a lot of crying since 1966, when Ford ended their relevance in all forms of racing, except F1. You'd think they'd know better than to laugh at Americans by now.

Lol, today I was watching your old video about the drift camaro, and BOOM, big red is here!

Really fantastic review of a, to the extreme, highly modded Z28. I owned a used one back in 1970 that was stone stock. My younger inebriated brother bought it new and shortly thereafter snapped a phone pole off with it. It never did track straight after that.
My brother bought it without a chin spoiler but purchased it after discovering that it began morphing into a plane at 130 mph. May be why it clipped that pole off.
It's a real testament to what these fellows have done to keep the Z on terraferma at 266 MPH. AMAZING!!!!!
