i finally took a tour a year ago after living in the area for almost a decade. the detail in every nook and cranny is insane. definitely love this maximalist design more than modern minimalism

Great tour, Jordan. I think you should have mentioned the woman that made it all possible, Julia Morgan, Hearst's architect. She was one of the most accomplished architects of the era and designed several buildings for Hearst including the Casa Grande. She was somewhat of a mysterious figure who never drew attention to herself but mastered her craft like few had done before her.

I’ve been here before, this is one of the things that are cool on camera but you have to try it out for yourself. The detail in every nook and cranny is insane. The gold in the pools, the 9 million Jesus paintings.

When I saw the title of your Vlog today I flipped out! Like many in the comments, I have longed to go there. I have read about Hearst Castle for years and watched documentaries over and over again on the subject. Can you imagine hanging out with all the biggest stars and VIP's of the day and then be seated at that loooong table for the mandatory dinner? This makes me want to watch Citizen Kane again. Thank you Jordan for making it possible to have this perspective on a legendary space. Can't wait to see more in the future!

I was in high school when I learned about this place from our US History teacher, bought slides there and photos that they sold there. I fell in love! Haven’t been there yet but it’s on my bucket list. You know he had wild animals just roaming the estate? And a crew of people to care for them all, peacocks, zebras etc. How cool was that? 👍👍👍

My parents took me here when I was just a teenager and had not one ounce of understanding behind the man, the culture, the art, the decoration, and everything. Even still, it blew my 13 year old mind when I saw this place in person. I was just awe inspired. It led me down a path of architecture and design and 22 years later, it is my career! Thank you Hearst Castle for being such a core memory of my childhood.

Hi Jordan... Heard a guide mention that Hearst Castle was built by a famous female architect, Julia Morgan Just imagine trying to contend with Hearst's temperament, changes of mind and his numerous "new acquisitions"! Julia Morgan is responsible for building over 700 structures in California, including the opulent Marion Davies home on the beach in Santa Monica (now gone) which probably utilized the over supply and cast-offs from up north. Before her beach house was demolished, the imported interior paneled ceilings, walls and furnishings, etc., were boxed up and, no doubt, grace the mansions of millionaires, local and distant. All that remains are the marble pool and a guest house that is often used as a filming venue. It now belongs to the City of Santa Monica, and is open to the public as the Annenberg Beach House. My SM junior high class celebrated graduating 8th grade with a pool party in that famous marble pool. Glad you got to see the indoor Roman pool at the Castle... (kinda spooky) and I hope that the Neptune pool has water in it by your next visit - it is beyond beautiful when full.

When I went on that tour they said that there was no varnish or finish on the dining room tables. The high gloss was built up from hundreds of years of daily waxing.

Fabulous...I love it up there..those views and cool ocean breezes. I took ground floor tour also.. but it included the gorgeous Roman outdoor pool..?? I did not realize those tapestries were that old...probably alot of security around there. Would Love nighttime experience! Did you see Zebras on the hillsides? I was wondering when he would mention Charlie Chaplin...he was with Mary or Marion I think...see newer movie with Kirsten Dunst and ? .. about Chaplin and one of these women mentioned here at Hearst's....

My brother is an industrial archaeologist and he chose blue willow as his personal china pattern...I thought it was because he unearthed so much of the stuff at camp towns doing research, but the more I think of it, it's probably because of WRH and Hearst Castle. ;) I need to ask him.

Wow! That was incredible. Those so-called plain sides of the castle sure looked ornate for being unfinished. The guy paid attention to every minute detail. The foliage alone around the walk-ways-- crazy! It is hard to even get the idea of just how huge the place is. This was quite the treat. Thanks so much. Trips back will certainly be just as enjoyable. The great thing is that it is now open for the public to enjoy. Everywhere you looked-- there was an antiquity of some sort

I'm so glad you did Hearst Castle. This place is one of California's hidden gems. If you're not from here you would never know it exists and if you are from here you still might not know it exists. I have been on all the tours and rumors have it that during Halloween there are other tours of rooms that aren't opened up the rest of the year. I just love this place.
Oh, you also have to have a proper Hearst Burger while you're up there if you don't you're just missing out on a part of the whole experience.
P.S. One never turns down an invitation from a Hearst even to this day.

😇💙 Hi Jordan, Thank YOU for the tour of Hurst Castle.🤗
I was either 17 or 18 years old, and my Mom and my two siblings, went to Hurst Castle, in the late seventies, but I didn't go, because I was a little mad at my Mom, so I turned down the visit, to Hurst Castle { if I'm being honest, I was a little bratty about it 🤭 } but years later, after I had my two children, my Hubby 😎 and I took a few trips, up to northern CA, and each time we drove the Pacific Coast, driving right by the castle.
    Years later, my Hubby 😎 and I, stopped by the castle { at the very bottom } and admired the castle, from afar. 🤗 You didn't mention Patty Hurst ??? But you did mention, five children { all boys }
    Thank YOU again.🤗
    LUV Joy.🤗

I remember seeing actors like Norma Shearer and her husband Irving Thalberg up there partying with Randolph ad Marion Davies. Davies became Hearts mistress. His wife knew about it but she never granted him a divorce. Hearts castle was the heyday of the 30's Golden Hollywood Jet Set. He went bankrupt and Marion bailed him out. I see the pool is empty, was it used for water for the fires near there? Or being renovated?

There was a crack in the Neptune pool and the San Simeon sun was evaporating the water at such a rate that it wasn’t worthwhile to fill the pool. But I think now it’s been fixed and filled.

He did inspire that film (he wasn't too pleased with Orson Welles), bit I was thinking of Xanadu while he was showing the castle!!!!

And then Hearst tried to ruin Orsen Welles's career.

The tour guide was amazing, and bedazzled. :) I've been here many times and I always love it just the same. So much history. So much beauty. My favorite parts are the indoor pool, his office, the gold chicken faucets in the kitchen, and the gorgeous roses and hydrangeas. The steps, not so much.

Yes, the paved areas and steps seem to overwhelm the landscape. The paths with trees and shrubs bordering them look much more inviting. The statuary is diverse, its fine as long as there is enough planting to soften it all and provide background.

+grantgmc1313 they said there were 50 maids and valets on property at the time, so someone probably came and summoned you for drinks much earlier

I went on a tour of the castle in 1992 while visiting my sister in Cali, we had just experienced a 7.4 quake two days before in Southern CA, I had never been so quite in all my life as we walked , I was just trying to take in all of the beauty and art around me, Hurst Castle is the real Disneyland.
