As there was no cussing no drinking no smoking and no brown people allowed at the castle Scotty actually spent very little time there while Betsy was in residence his place is actually in a canyon behind the castle.

I've been through the castle as a kid in the mid 1960s, I think 64, and was back again about 1972. My Aunt told us she and her then San Francisco, successful real estate broker husband, heard about the castle around WWII, and took a trip down there in their car and were at the gate looking in , when Scotty drive up, my uncle told him who he was and they were invited in , they met the Mr Johnson and they rented a room for the night in the guest cottage and had a simple dinner with them in the kitchen. It's a very interesting place, and beautiful mansion

I have toured this house many times but much of what the National Park Service told us is a bit glossed over and not as dirty handed. Mr Johnson’s health dramatically increased when he came to visit in the summertime and he fell in love with Death Valley.

@@madcrowmaxwell Mr Johnson loved his life at his Death Valley area home. I must've been so much simpler than the hectic business atmosphere that he was used to and the climate was great for his health condition. He lost 90% of his fortune after the 1929 stock market crash and subsequent great depression. That is why the giant swimming pool was never finished. It is rumored that all of the beautiful imported tiles are stored in the underground area next to the swimming pool. There are glass windows that look into the pool from the deep end. The house also had a form of evaporative cooling with wet fabric that air would blow through with air vents that can be seen in the big living room. I have not toured there for a very long time. My first visit was back in the late 1970's driving my 1977 VW Rabbit (Golf).

I was in Death Valley in Feb 2023. It hasn't been open to the public since a major storm in 2015 destroyed Scotty's Castle Road, caused flooding inside, and damage infrastructure around the compound. While under repair, in August 2022, a 1,000 flood further damaged the road and caused a fire at the compound. There are guide-led walking tours around the compound about the impact of flood prone areas (and climate change).

A night i would go upstairs to the music room and listen to all the music. A that time the instruments were behind a louvered wall that opened up when playing so you could see all of them playing the cook house wes well stocked and we could preoair food and time 24/7 as long as we ckeaned up the mess we made, i was themonly one there that had a car and gave every one a ride to i thank it was Baity to the casinos and brothels. i went boke in vegas thats how i wound up at the castle, LONG STORY
