Hi Jennifer , thanks for this video and very informative contents in general ! Fully agree that Vangaurd is matchless ! Extremely knowledgeable and responsive customer care at the same time with least expense ratios for funds . Their Money market pays 2.8% dividend as of now, based on the 7 day SEC yeild rate , which compounds every day and paid monthly , which is comparable (or even better) than the 4 week treasury rate . Since this interest pay out happens every month and gets added to the principal for the next month, the following month earns even more interest. You have secondary market options to trade bonds and CDs as well in Vangaurd. Fidelity customer care wait times are really long and there was no call back option as of January this year and hence I moved away from Fidelity completely. But that was just my experience. At this point, I have consolidated all my investments in Vangaurd and its going great !
Hi Jennifer, I opened this video, got into my Vanguard account and followed step by step. I bought a 4 week T Bill. It will Auction on 10/27! This was very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks Jennifer for another great video! Just opened a rollover IRA at Vanguard, so this info is timely for me. Also as one of the commenters below noted, their default sweep account that my funds were initially deposited into-the Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund-has an SEC 7 day yield close to the 4 week Treasury bill (after expenses) and only an 11 basis point expense ratio, which appears to be considerably lower than competing money market funds. While Vanguard doesn't appear to have an auto-roll function for treasury bills and notes like some other brokerages, the yield on my sweep account/money market fund will make waiting a week to reinvest less painful. BTW, I saw after today's auction results were published at Treasury Direct, that the 8 week had a high yield of 3.69% and an investment rate of 3.76%. Not bad for 2 month government paper.
@@DiamondNestEgg Is there a way to reinvest existing T-Bills at maturity at Vanguard without waiting for the proceeds and simply purchasing during the next cycle? Since this is a feature at TreasuryDirect, it sure would be nice to have at Vanguard. Thanks!

Vanguard will not accept orders for the 3 and 6 month auctions after 5pm EST, today." even though auction doesn't close until the 30th
Thanks for your detailed explanation. I have found your videos extremely helpful and have been hoping that you would post information on how to effect this purchase from Vanguard.. I'm starting my T-Bill ladder on Vanguard today.
I am really enjoying your content! You have now done comparisons between Fidelity and Vanguard. Are the interest rates exactly the same for the T-bills for both? Or do they have slight differences?
Thanks for the great video! I have a brokerage account, a rollover brokerage account and an IRA brokerage account at Vanguard. What account is best for this? Thank you
Thanks for taking the time to answer all the questions, Jennifer! On the "Order Details" page of a pending bond/bill purchase, is the "Quantity" in dollars....or the amount of bonds/bills you are purchasing? I think it's in dollars, but they don't show the amount with a dollar sign so I wasn't sure! Thanks again!
I don't have any pending orders at the moment with Vanguard, so can't check what the order details page looks like, but 7:57 before you submit your order, on the review page, it should show you the dollar amount (face value).
Hello, Nice step by step instructions. I have my solo-401 account with Vanguard, can I buy treasury bills in my 401 account? If yes do I need to keep balance in vanguard money market account?
I talk about my preference for buying new issues at auction towards the end of this video: What Is A Treasury Bill 2022 | Top 9 Things You Should Know About T-Bills ruclips.net/video/jIBn3VFkDw8/видео.html
Hi Jennifer, You are awe-inspiring! My question: would you cover buying T-bills on the 2nd market? I heard you explain that you don't recommend it because of the spread. But I would LOVE to understand how it works and what the pitfalls are. Even a short video detailing why you should avoid them would be super helpful to me. How I wish I discovered you two years ago!
Thanks for all your very helpful videos. Does Vanguard have the rollover feature for t-bills like Fidelity has? Also, on the t-bill maturity date, does the cash just show up in the settlement account or is some other action required?
Thanks for the terrific video. I don't know if you noticed, but on 10/19 they auctioned a 17-week T-Bill for some reason. I don't know what that was all about, but it wasn't a CMB, and doing an Auction Query, it looks like they never offered that before. I didn't even see it on the Auction Schedule PDF file that you showed. I wonder if it's going to be a regular thing, or just an oddity.
just saw an auction for a 17 week t bill but it’s not on their schedule spreadsheet. but i’m excited and hope this is a weekly offer so i can buy it as part of my laddering.
What did the message, "the settlement for this order request has been extended beyond the standard settlement date." Mean? What is it telling the purchaser?
Great video! I’m with Vanguard and thanks to you I’m buying t-bills. I think you showed on Fidelity that you can set them to automatically renew when they mature. I wonder why Vanguard doesn’t offer that?
@@DiamondNestEgg no auto roll feature seems basic but i guess they cant make it to easy they rather have you get tired and just put your money back into the sweep account then they can but t-bills with your money just a thought
A lot of times, if you are using Apple computers to trade T- Bonds or Bills with Vanguard it won't work. You have to click on safari in the left upper corner, go to preferences, then to "privacy", then disable, "Prevent cross-site tracking". This is an edit. Having bought bills several times on Vanguard, I have found several different form pages when buying, Only once did it look like the one shown here.
Hi Diamond thank you so much for your helpful videos and easy to follow presentation, I found your videos through I Bond research and glad I came across this. I had a question. I recently purchased the 52 week T Bill on Vanguard's secondary auction maturing at the end of Jan/2024; my account is showing the cash flow out to purchase the T Bill but not the cash flow in, so my current account balance is $10K less (hopefully that makes sense) than what it was before purchasing. Is this expected or something is wrong?
Hi Jennifer! Thanks so much for the video. It helped me to execute my first T-Bill purchase in Vanguard!🎉. However, I see the executed price. How do I calculate the purchase price? I just see an quantity (the amount I told it purchase) and the executed price. I can’t figure it out. 😢
Great video (s). If i did not check the box to reinvest the T bill at maturity am i correct to assume that it goes back to my settlement fund? Thank you!
Love your tutorials. So useful. Not to be stupid, but how do you redeem them at maturity? I'm not referring to the secondary market, if 13 week, after 13 weeks what happens? It matures and then what?
Thanks! Once it matures, the proceeds from the 13-week T-Bill would go back to your bank account that you set up with TD or to your brokerage/ retirement account (if purchased via a broker)
Hello, thanks for all the great info. Does Vangaurd make it easy to resell your t bills on the secondary market? I saw in an earlier video on Fidelity that you could do it by pushing a sell button.
What does the colors on the action schedule mean? Why are some different colors of yellow, and some have no color? And thank you so much for doing this video. I would not have been able to figure this out myself and I need to park some short term cash and this is perfect.
Hi Jennifer, with tge 75bp int rate hike today, will that be reflected in treasury auction tomorrow , ie better to order today to take advantage ? Thanks
Thanks. Very informative video! …so if you buy from VG vs TD you get the same tax advantage and you pay the same fee i.e. zero… But with VG you have to buy in $1000 vs TD’s $100 increments…. Also I would imagine you have greater counterparty risk with VG than TD…??
When I go on vanguard, I hit quick search ,find the Treasuries line, chose the length of time I want. It come up with many choices of treasuries with different yield, discount and maturity date. Is the yield or discount more important? How do you choose? Thanks!
I like the Vanguard website. It’s easy to navigate. But it seems like transactions take longer than they should. For example, I sold some mutual funds. The “Settlement Fund” didn’t reflect the sell for 2 or 3 days. It should be instant in 2023.
That's because most mutual funds need at least one business day to "settle". Vanguard probably then needs 1 - 2 more days to do the transfer from your brokerage/ retirement account(s) to the settlement fund. I've had similar experiences.
Thank you for all you do i have a question i am trying to buy 10/25/2022 announcement date for a 4 week bill on vanguard site its 7:30 am pt on the 25th but vanguard does not have the buy radio button on is there certain time on that date you can you buy is it a set time frame on the announcement the day?
Very educational videos. I may buy a T bill through my Vanguard Roth IRA. When it matures, do I have the opportunity to reinvest the principal and the interest or does the full amount go to my sweep account or personal bank account? I would like everything to stay in my IRA.
I’m not quite sure. I just opened a Vanguard account recently for the tutorial because folks in the community asked for it. Perhaps others in the community might know?
Each of my vanguard account(s); taxable brokerage, Traditional IRA, ROTH IRA all have their own sweep account(s). So yes, funds always go to/from the sweep account within each acct. number by default.
@@garymcfadden2797 that's true Merrill is not an attractive brokerage firm but I have some funds with them and was wondering how to go about putting them into T-bills. The secondary mkt bills are self select and not charged. Primary bills need to go through active trade desk team and have an upcharge
This is a great tutorial. However, is there really an advantage of buying T Bills over Vanguard money market? It seems like you’re only picking up 30bps or so. .003 x $100K = $300 and that’s only if you keep this going for at least a year because these yields are annualized. I don’t know, I guess it could be worth it. Seems like you need a bazillion dollars though to really make an appreciable difference in your finances.
Once a 4-week T-Bill matures, do you have to place a "sell" order to get the money back in the sweep account or will VG automatically assumes that since it has matured, the money automatically comes back? And if that is the case, when will the fund actually show up? Say you bought the 4-week Tbill announced on Oct 4, the settlement date is Oct 11 (the money is debited from the sweep). Technically the T-bill matures on 11/7. Will the money credit on 11/8 or a few days later? Thanks for your feedback!
Vanguard does not offer auto reinvestment currently. When the T-Bill matures, the proceeds go back to the account you purchased them from (and into the settlement account based on my experience).
Would it be fair to assume that if the Fed raises rates by .75% on Nov 2, the yields on Treasuries would rise shortly thereafter pushing most yields above 5%? Or are there more complex factors involved that dictate how much higher, if any, the yields would rise? Great site BTW. Thanks.
I just logged on to my TD account & there are quite a few T-Bills available for purchase. If you want to buy from TD, the latter part of this video is more relevant: ruclips.net/video/rFuiC-UNeMc/видео.html If you want to buy from Vanguard, you need to go through the auction schedule to see what's available for purchase. I go through how to do this in the first part of this video.

i'm not sure why i would buy something when i don't know what the yield will be
Super helpful. Is there a resource that explains how to set a t-bill to auto renew upon maturity through Vanguard?
Vanguard doesn’t offer auto-roll/ re-investment
Great video (s). If i did not check the box to reinvest the T bill at maturity am i correct to assume that it goes back to my settlement fund? Thank you!
That was our experience
Is the "Indicative Yield" for the term of the t-bill or is that for a year? For example, does a 1-month t-bill actually yield 3.5% in a month?
Love your tutorials. So useful. Not to be stupid, but how do you redeem them at maturity? I'm not referring to the secondary market, if 13 week, after 13 weeks what happens? It matures and then what?
Thanks! Once it matures, the proceeds from the 13-week T-Bill would go back to your bank account that you set up with TD or to your brokerage/ retirement account (if purchased via a broker)
Wondeful vedio! So after it matures, I basically have to manually renew the t bill on Vanguard? I assume they can not auto renew. Thank you so much!
Hello, thanks for all the great info. Does Vangaurd make it easy to resell your t bills on the secondary market? I saw in an earlier video on Fidelity that you could do it by pushing a sell button.
It's similar on Vanguard - go to the T-Bill you own in your account, click on Transact on the far right & there'll be an option to buy/ sell.
Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for informations. I have a question, can I buy Treasury direct on Vanguard mobile?
I haven’t tried doing it this way, but I have seen some comments from folks mentioning issues when they tried on their mobile app.
Thank you! Is there an auto roll option with Vanguard?
Unfortunately not at this time
Actually just looked it up and NO there is not an auto-roll option with Vanguard.
What does the colors on the action schedule mean? Why are some different colors of yellow, and some have no color? And thank you so much for doing this video. I would not have been able to figure this out myself and I need to park some short term cash and this is perfect.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Not certain if there is a reason/ what the reason is for coloring system
Hi Jennifer, with tge 75bp int rate hike today, will that be reflected in treasury auction tomorrow , ie better to order today to take advantage ? Thanks
It's a bit late now for me to answer this, but stay tuned for this week's video. Should help inform more of your overall decision-making process.
Thanks. Very informative video! …so if you buy from VG vs TD you get the same tax advantage and you pay the same fee i.e. zero… But with VG you have to buy in $1000 vs TD’s $100 increments…. Also I would imagine you have greater counterparty risk with VG than TD…??
You're welcome. If you buy from a Vanguard brokerage account online, then yes, you get the same tax advantage.
I'm just learning about T bills. Thank you. Can I name a beneficiary on my t bills at order time?
If you are buying via Vanguard, the beneficiary is set at the account level
Thank you for all you do i have a question i am trying to buy 10/25/2022 announcement date for a 4 week bill on vanguard site its 7:30 am pt on the 25th but vanguard does not have the buy radio button on is there certain time on that date you can you buy is it a set time frame on the announcement the day?
Hi David. It's on there now (10/25, 12:17pm EST). Depending on the brokerage company, it can appear anywhere between 10am EST and 1pm EST.
Can you tell me when the t bill matures is that rate fixed at purchase price or could be different at time of sale??
When the T-Bill matures, you get back the face/ par value
Very educational videos. I may buy a T bill through my Vanguard Roth IRA. When it matures, do I have the opportunity to reinvest the principal and the interest or does the full amount go to my sweep account or personal bank account? I would like everything to stay in my IRA.
I’m not quite sure. I just opened a Vanguard account recently for the tutorial because folks in the community asked for it. Perhaps others in the community might know?
@@DiamondNestEgg Thank you. I hope someone will respond.
Each of my vanguard account(s); taxable brokerage, Traditional IRA, ROTH IRA all have their own sweep account(s). So yes, funds always go to/from the sweep account within each acct. number by default.
@@wagsgirl5820 Thankyou so much.
Can you please make a video on how to purchase T Bills on Merrill Edge platform?
@@garymcfadden2797 that's true Merrill is not an attractive brokerage firm but I have some funds with them and was wondering how to go about putting them into T-bills. The secondary mkt bills are self select and not charged. Primary bills need to go through active trade desk team and have an upcharge
Perhaps in the next two weeks or so
This is a great tutorial.
You don't have to sell it - the proceeds just went back to the account I originally purchased it from
@@DiamondNestEgg thank you!!
Are you able to reinvest your t bills once they reach maturity with Vanguard? I saw your Fidelity video and seems like you can reinvest with them.
Vanguard doesn’t offer this option unfortunately
What happens at t-bill maturity? Does it go to your vanguard cash account automatically or do you have to something on the vanguard website?
The proceeds go back to the account you purchased them from
@@DiamondNestEgg Thank you!
What do you have to do when the 1 month t bill mature, do you have to sell it? thanks in advance
The proceeds will automatically go back to your brokerage account
@@DiamondNestEgg thank you so much.
Is it better to buy on auction or secondary market for T-Bills?
I talk about my preference for auctions towards the end of this video: ruclips.net/video/jIBn3VFkDw8/видео.html
Can vanguard make it more difficult? There redundancies are annoying. How do I buy on their app? Is it faster?
Is there a "Auto Roll" feature in Vanguard as shown for Fidelity, per your video?
No unfortunately
@@DiamondNestEgg Thank-you. I love your explanations and am a big fan.
I didn't see in the video any option for auto reinvestment or transfer back to a savings account at settlement. Is that available with Vanguard?
Vanguard does not offer auto reinvestment currently. When the T-Bill matures, the proceeds go back to the account you purchased them from (and into the settlement account based on my experience).
Is there a way to auto reinvest on vanguard?
Unfortunately not
Question: Once the bill matured, will I get back the face value into my settlement funds in Vanguard ?
Yes
Would it be fair to assume that if the Fed raises rates by .75% on Nov 2, the yields on Treasuries would rise shortly thereafter pushing most yields above 5%? Or are there more complex factors involved that dictate how much higher, if any, the yields would rise? Great site BTW. Thanks.
Yes! I’d love to know the same!
It really depends on what the market has already priced in - basically, it’s anyone’s guess at this point
Jennifer, are there normally T bills? I see only one with issue date of 10/25 on TD website but not on schedule.
I just logged on to my TD account & there are quite a few T-Bills available for purchase. If you want to buy from TD, the latter part of this video is more relevant: ruclips.net/video/rFuiC-UNeMc/видео.html
If you want to buy from Vanguard, you need to go through the auction schedule to see what's available for purchase. I go through how to do this in the first part of this video.
