@@jeffyeah4256 What I do is make sure I have at least 3 month’s expenses (mortgage, utilities, food, vehicle, entertainment) in liquid cash available at all times, plus I keep tax payment timing in mind. I realized the rest of my money was just sitting in the bank, year after year, so I chose to make interest off it. YMMV. Jennifer, I'm sorry I've only recently discovered your instructional video's. They are absolutely outstanding!. I love how concise they are. You are knowledgeable, well-spoken and easy to understand. I really appreciate your videos. You explain in a very easy to understand way. This is one of the best financial advice channels I have seen
Thank you so much Jennifer. I have just right now bought my first TBill in Fidelity with your instructions and I didn't have any idea about it before I saw your video.
This channel is an absolute "treasure" (pun intended)! I'm here from a recommendation by Suze Orman. Thank you so much for providing crystal clear details and instructions on Treasuries. I'm ready to dive in 🙂
OMG ! I Luv your instructional video on how to buy T-Bills. You are a gifted Instructor. I tried to initially buy a T-bill on Treasury Direct and got a headache! LOL. Fidelity is so much easier. I am telling all my friends about this channel.
Jennifer, I am a subscriber - primarily, there is no one that is explaining this like YOU. I bought $20K in Series I Bonds (wife and I) because of your advice !! I would Love to see your videos about Retirees at 71 , approaching the "withdrawal years ahead form 401Ks. Converting 401Ks and /or Traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs , the pros and cons. THX for your info.
OMG! Jennifer, you are the treasure RUclipsr! Why are you so good at presenting at such a high level and diving deep by explaining every detail of T-bills/notes/bonds and how to purchase them at Fidelity & TreasuryDirect???? I have watched this video so many times during the last 24 hrs!!! The more I watch it, the more I feel I can learn from you!!! I will definitely subscribe to your channel now and refer you to my friends!!!
Thank you Jennifer as always for the well researched content and the excellent presentation. I had some extra cash lying around in my checking account which I was planning to use to buy some equity. As the stock market is still consolidating, after watching your video I ended up buying T-bills with 3 month maturity. Thank you!
Wow! This couldn't be more helpful or timely. Just moved an IRA and Roth IRA to Fidelity. Had existing Rolloever IRA and taxable accounts already, but I've only become interested in fixed income investments for the first time since the 70's (Yes , I must be old.) This was an outstanding intro to these products. I'll next be going through all your videos. BTW, someone at Fidelity must have watched this too, as now every screen in the T-Bill ordering process has a notation that "1 equals $1,000." Thanks for this. You've just taught an old dog a new trick!
I watched this video as well as your I-Bonds video and passed the word along in the Suze Orman app which many people appreciated. Your presentations are always so well detailed and easy to understand which I gratefully appreciate. I am now a subscriber and thank you so very much!
Impressive: your screen shots and highlighting on them is top notch. Walking through the screens are a perfect tutorial for new users. Your efforts certainly takes a ton of time and you deserve all subs and viewers you get (and more).
thank you for sharing this video ,, me and my wife have worked for a very long time , paying bills and kids tuition ,, finally we are saving some money but don't know how to make it grow ,, i will follow your instruction to the T .. thanks again Jennifer .
Thanks for the outstanding tutorial! This has always seemed complicated and a bit of mystery to me; however, you've definitely shown me it's a lot simpler and easier than I thought. Appreciate you sharing this.
Your instructions are so clear and easy to follow. I read about purchasing from treasurydirect from another website. After watching your video I realized that Icould purchase from my Fidelity with auto roll. It's so much easier (website user interface). Thanks so much! Excellent video!
Thanks, Jennifer! I finally gained the courage to purchase my first new issue T-Bill through Fidelity thanks to your super, clear, concise, and easily understandable videos on the how/why to buy new issue T-Bills, Notes, Bonds. Before I just kept my funds in low interest credit union accounts, looked at CDs, and never thought brokerage accounts could be an option for me. I’ve learned so much from you. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thanks for the great information. I just discovered treasury direct and I bonds a few days ago and I was quickly overwhelmed by the confusing website. I had looked into treasuries a little bit, but your explanation made it much much easier to understand.
Thank you very much for your educational Video. I am buying cd and t bills on my fidelity account now. I love the step by step on how to purchase in fidelity. Love your videos!!!😊
Very helpful. I'm going to start buying bonds to risk adjust as Kid 1 gets closer to college. I assumed TreasuryDirect (if I choose government bonds) was the way to go, this made it clear, for me, to use Fidelity and now I have the steps to do so. Thank you!!!
Hi Jennifer. This was a very informative video and we used it along with your buying a TBill Ladder to make that happen in our Fidelity account. Now that our 4-week TBill's matured (yesterday 12/6/2022 maturity) we are realizing that the purchase of these 4-week TBills was done on the Auction Date, which was 5 days before the Issue Date. Since the days between the Issue Date and the Maturity date is 28 days (4-weeks) and the difference between the Auction Date and the Maturity date is 33 days, our annualized return turns out to be less than expected. In this case, we expected 3.68% annualized return for the 28 days, but it turns out to be 3.12% instead because the investment period (the time between when the money came out of our investment account for the TBill purchase and the time the face value of the TBill was returned) was 33 days. I don't see that mentioned anywhere in the video or the comments and I'm wondering if maybe Fidelity made a mistake with our trade or if that's just how it works. Thank you! - Love your channel.
I wonder if that is how etrades et al are able to offer these services for free as they get to use your money for 5 days for free. Alas, it is the same on treasurydirect, so it appears that this is just the way the system is set up.
I have exactly the same concern and also have fidelity. High yield savings rates are decent now and would like to know when/if I'm really making more on a TBill , so want to factor in the true amount of days my money is tied up so I can compare apples to apples on the APY. I know Jennifer could make a great video to make it simple for us! Loving this channel.
Thank you very much for useful videos. Actually it is very easy to buy and sell directly in the treasury direct. I have been doing it for years without problems.
This was very helpful. I have been meaning to buy some treasuries for a while now but was unsure how to do so on treasury direct or Fidelity. I made a 1k purchase to try and it seemed very easy. Thanks for the video.
Is there a quiz at the end? Cause I thought this was a class on Treasury purchases lol. Your video is clear and concise. I would rate you as an A+ teacher.
I have a fidelity account. Stock. I also have come into a sum of cash which I must protect. I called my fidelity contact asked how to invest in treasuries. He said I must buy from treasury direct not fidelity. You guided me to treasury bills. I love ❤️ you and if I were not really old… I’m now going to take my nap.
Thank you so much for making this process understandable. If you don't live in this world, it looks very bewildering from the start, but you really helped me understand it so much better. I really appreciate that. Thanks for sharing this.
The best info I have come across that explains this process and separates out the advantages/disadvantages of broker vs direct purchase. Thanks so much
WOW !!! I Have decided to start putting money into government securities for some time. Not really understanding the process, I have been viewing many presentations, of which yours' is by far the most through and easy to understand. I am sure that I will be reviewing this again just to make sure I have a better understanding Thank you so much for your clarity..
Jennifer, I am looking forward to seeing the video you make after the Sept. Fed meeting. I am also waiting for that meeting before placing additional funds in T Bills. (I use TD and a bank account to handle my transactions. It was a pain in the butt getting the account set up, etc.).
As always, Jennifer, your timing is perfect for the subject of your videos. The two-year treasury bond yield is over 4%. Short term treasuries are at wicked-crazy rates that I may never see again. My wife and I are almost 60 years old and cruising comfortably into our long happy lives that includes retiring next year. What about bond/ CD ladders and what/why are the best accounts to build the ladders (taxable/non-taxable)? Thank you for being an asset to ...
I’ve never done it so late so can’t really say - latest I’ve placed an order is around 9:45am. Best bet is to call your brokerage company to confirm cutoff time.
Smart girl for sure... Info all condensed in a few vidios covering a lot of what I learned over a long period of time. I agree with her completely.. She speaks the truth.
Thanks for the helpful overview and tutorial. Looking forward to your next video after the meeting to see which TBills are most attractive. Will you be sharing which ones you are buying in that video? Tbills are new to me. I've had Ibonds since the beginning of the year.
I did it!! I just set up my account with Fidelity to purchase ny very first T-Bills! Thank you, Jennifer!! You are always "right on the money". Pun completely intended!!😂
I would like to see you explain the advantages of building a CD ladder using Treasury Bills, Notes, etc. please. Also of note are the Fidelity core position money market funds (where Fidelity holds your uninvested cash) are currently yielding 1.91% for FZFXX &1.84% for SPAXX!
Hi! So great Suze Orman mentioned your RUclips page on her podcast today, I'm watching your videos and have just subscribed! Might I ask where the 'direct link below on the zero percent certificate of indebtedness' is? Also, do you know if it is easy to get your money back once the bill matures? Or is there a long delay? Thank you so much, I appreciate your videos.
Thanks! I just added the link back again - not sure what happened, but here you go: www.treasurydirect.gov/rs/152-ZeroPercentCofIInfoPopup.htm Also, regarding your question about how easy it is to get your money back, someone else in the community told me this morning that TD had told her 2 business days after maturity, & she got her money back in 1.5 business days.
This has me concerned too. Did my very first 4 week T-Bill from TreasuryDirect about 3 weeks ago as a test. When it matures it's going into the "C of I" holding account (again as a test to see how it works). Do I have wait 45 days to transfer the money from C of I back to my savings account??
@@piggsinablankie When my last T-bills matured & were reinvested into the next new issues, the interest earned from those matured T-bills was transferred into my bank account the next business day. My assumptions are that: 1) the same would apply for my principal/ face value when I stop reinvestment & 2) once your T-bill funds are transferred to your C of I, you should be able to send it over to your savings account without waiting 45 days. Having said all this, I don't have any experience with a C of I at TD, so if you do have an answer for us at some point, please come back & let the community know!
@@DiamondNestEgg Thanks for your reply and really terrific videos. I watched a few of yours on I Bonds and it convinced me to do $20000 on them too for me and my company ($10000 each). I will let you know how easy it is to get the money from C of I. I believe my first 4 week Bill matures on Sept 20th. If it's really difficult to transfer the money out, I may have to tweak my strategy a little. I find it really hard to believe you have to wait 45 days on a matured Bill to get your money back from their holding account. I kind of jumped the gun a little and started my 13 week Bill strategy before my 4 week test is over (hard to pass up the great interest rates). I'm buying a larger amount every week for 13 weeks on a rotation, but may stop that strategy if they are going to hold my money for 45 days after maturity, which again I find impossible to believe. Thanks again. Keep up the great videos!
Hi Jennifer. As always great explanations. Just one point of clarification needed. On the Treasury Direct purchase instructions where you choose the length of your "Scheduled Reinvestment". You indicated a "1" and said that represented one year. I don't see anything that would indicate that would be one year. I would have intuitively thought putting a 1 in that box would mean that I want my T Bill to be reinvested one time (so another 4 weeks). Am I wrong? Is it really one year?
Great tutorial, thank you very much. Unless I missed something I still do not understand why to buy US T-bills if a Money Market account like SPAXX-Fidelity has similar yield.
Thanks for the video. I was a little wary of buying through Fidelity through auction but this saved me a lot of trouble and I got a great price today on 20-year bonds.
Thank you for this wonderful video, really helps people who is new to T bill. I do have two questions: 1. In your video at 19:19, what will happpen if I will not do auto roll? When can I sell my T bill ? How do I do it? Can I sell it anytime? Will my money go back to my bank immediately if I sell it?
Just heard of you today from Suze Ormans podcast, she just discovered you and thought your videos are great, so here I am! Thank you for answering so many questions I had, I subscribed today of course! Will be bingeing….
22:08 Another reason to use TD is you don't have to wait for funds to transfer to the brokerage and become available to purchase T-Bills, assuming there aren't funds already available in brokerage account. Can simply purchase via TD the night before from linked bank account.
Jennifer, thank you so much for your superb video. I have been researching Treasury bills and CDs for some time. But was always confused on the buying step. Your video cleared it all up. I can’t recommend you highly enough. I look forward to learning from more of your videos. Nick

I am sure that I will be reviewing this again just to make sure I have a better understanding Thank you so much for your clarity..
Glad you enjoyed the video & good luck!
Jennifer, I am looking forward to seeing the video you make after the Sept. Fed meeting.
I am also waiting for that meeting before placing additional funds in T Bills. (I use TD and a bank account to handle my transactions. It was a pain in the butt getting the account set up, etc.).
Thanks for putting this video together. I found buying t-bills a little intimidating. I can't wait to watch more of your videos. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed the video tutorial
As always, Jennifer, your timing is perfect for the subject of your videos. The two-year treasury bond yield is over 4%.
Short term treasuries are at wicked-crazy rates that I may never see again. My wife and I are almost 60 years old and cruising comfortably into our long happy lives that includes retiring next year.
What about bond/ CD ladders and what/why are the best accounts to build the ladders (taxable/non-taxable)?
Thank you for being an asset to ...
Stay tuned for the next video Steve! And you're welcome!
@@DiamondNestEgg Which investor you respect for portfolio allocation?
Jen, you can place your order up until 11 am on the day of Auction. Love your channel !
I’ve never done it so late so can’t really say - latest I’ve placed an order is around 9:45am. Best bet is to call your brokerage company to confirm cutoff time.
As always, another excellent, well presented video. Very helpful. Thank you.
Most likely yes
I did it!! I just set up my account with Fidelity to purchase ny very first T-Bills! Thank you, Jennifer!! You are always "right on the money". Pun completely intended!!😂
LOL!
Question…you place your order before you know what the interest rate is? Thank you for making informative videos. It really helps. ❤️
Yes, at 10:04 is the link that gives you an idea what the rates at recent auctions looked like
@@DiamondNestEgg You are the best! I appreciate the response.
Thank You so much for this step by step guide on Fidelity. I could not figure out how to find the T Bills from my Fidelity account!
Noted - thanks for another good video idea!
This is excellent info for those who wish to put their "low-risk" money to work! Thank you!
Thanks! I just added the link back again - not sure what happened, but here you go: www.treasurydirect.gov/rs/152-ZeroPercentCofIInfoPopup.htm
Also, regarding your question about how easy it is to get your money back, someone else in the community told me this morning that TD had told her 2 business days after maturity, & she got her money back in 1.5 business days.
This is among the most well explained channels. Congratulations !
Thanks for another great video. The 45 days lock-in period is for treasury notes/bonds and not for bills, right?
It’s for T-Bills also. So if you buy a 4-week T-Bill from TD, you basically can’t sell it before maturity.
@@DiamondNestEgg Thank you, makes sense.
Such a great and comprehensive explanation. EXCELLENT!
Hi Carol. “1 Here” (not 1 year). I lost my microphone on vacation & it seems this old one is not as good!
I was literally looking to purchase some T-bills, notes in my Fidelity Acct!!! Don’t know how I found you, but boy I’m glad I did! Amazing breakdown ❤
Great video! You answered all of the questions I had on buying T Bills after I watched another video on how to buy T Bills.
thank you for explaining the Treasury process to the people it really helps us to understand the process.
Great video. Everything I've been wondering about treasuries in one video.
🙏🏽 Thank you. I think I have found my Investment Guru!
Just heard of you today from Suze Ormans podcast, she just discovered you and thought your videos are great, so here I am! Thank you for answering so many questions I had, I subscribed today of course! Will be bingeing….
😊 glad you found us via Suze!
Really well thought out and explained. 10/10
Thank you so much for your videos. You present things in an easy to understand way to the average person.
Very helpful video. Very concise and understandable. Thank you!
22:08 Another reason to use TD is you don't have to wait for funds to transfer to the brokerage and become available to purchase T-Bills, assuming there aren't funds already available in brokerage account. Can simply purchase via TD the night before from linked bank account.
Thanks for sharing!
My comments are like all the others: clear and to-the-point presentation. thanks
Jennifer, thank you so much for your superb video. I have been researching Treasury bills and CDs for some time. But was always confused on the buying step. Your video cleared it all up. I can’t recommend you highly enough. I look forward to learning from more of your videos.
Nick
awesome video. I had zero knowledge and now I am very informed on how to buy treasuries. Thanks!
Glad you found the video helpful
