Why I Stopped Caring About My Grades

  • For a lot of you guys, getting good grades in school has always been a priority. That was the case for me as well and I took pride in only getting A’s in school. However, that all changed when I stepped into college. For a while, I felt frustrated and didn’t know what to do. But, while getting good grades should be sought after, life’s much better when you don’t let grades affect you.

    One of the life lessons is to learn how to recognize what's really important in particular moment in life. And you did it. Not only grades count. You're very intelligent, humble and kind person. I can see you now as very successful person in the future. So learn everything what you can and enjoy school life, friends and family. This is great content and thank you for sharing it with us. Good luck! 🙂

    College is too hard to get As all the time. I think it's great to get As and Bs, sometimed Cs. People don't expect you to get straight As unless you are cheating, live under a rock or have help.

    Honestly your video reasonates with me so much! Thank you for your affirmining message at the hour I needed to study for my final exams. Your life story is so relatable and I've felt the same way about my academic career. That one line you talked about caring about your relationships, friends and family felt reassuring that I don't need to rely my self worth based on grades. Thank you so much for making my night.

    Dang, I can really relate to this video cause I've always been self-motivated to get As too and I'm scared that when I inevitably "break the streak" at Rice I'm not going to take it well. It's cool to hear that you learned so much from this! Here's to hoping I don't screw up my lin al test tomorrow 😬

    Personally, I don’t think you need a perfect GPA to be smart. You’re already smart! And also, I wasn’t offended when you were talking about your Academic success. I love hearing about other people who have higher Academic Success than I. It helps me see the other side of the coin.

    • @GeraldWang
      @GeraldWang  4 года назад +4

      Nothing to really look over per se. I'd try to be open and outgoing. From what I remember they asked me something along these lines (plus more that I can't really remember):
      Why do you want to go to Rice?
      What extracurriculars do you do?
      Name times where you demonstrated leadership.
      If you have unlimited resources, how will you change the world?
      As long as you know what you're interested in and prepare to answer these questions you should be good!

    Ok so I’m a freshman in highschool and I already don’t particularly care about grades, I care more so about learning in general, but how do I care more about grades bc I want to get into a good college. Any advice y’all?

    • @GeraldWang
      @GeraldWang  3 года назад

      When I was in hs, I'd say one of the biggest factors for me to care about grades was that most of my friends were really smart academically. It's hard to describe succinctly but it was kind of like a friendly competition that encouraged all of us to do our best in our classes. Now I wouldn't advise doing something like this or looking for people who are really smart academically, it just so happened that the friends I were with cared a lot about school. I can't say for sure what can help you care more about grades but other than seeing my peers do well, what motivated me was the personal pride I felt from doing well in classes. I tried setting personal challenges for me and seeing if I could reach them. Again, this is just my personal experience so take it with a grain of salt, but hope this helps!

    What about friends that put you down and compete with you there are friends you hate and like

    • @GeraldWang
      @GeraldWang  2 года назад

      I would hesitate to call people who put you down friends. On the competition note, however, there's an aspect of healthy and unhealthy competition. A lot of my friends were competitive in grades but it wasn't toxic or anything. They're competitiveness helped give me the drive to stay focused and work hard at learning. I would say that's healthy competition. But at the end of the day there will be people you hate and like and that's just something everyone needs to work with in their own ways.
