    went to a friend's property in SW oregon, first time planner, gonna go back in August to recover all the gold I dumped out of my pan, thank you for the tutorial, best one yet, I will be watching this many times, and again back in OREGON

    Thanks to you, I'm now majoring in geology @ KSU. Your videos and technical geological terminology help me apply what I'm learning in my classes to real life. Did some panning out in Colorado this past summer in the South Platte River, got a few flakes, but didn't have enough time to go up stream, I hope to go back there and do some more placing. For now I'm stuck in college studying rocks... GL to you on your findings.

      I'm glad to have been inspiring. Now for some practical advice passed on to me by a PhD: Major in the broadest field that adequately covers your field of interest but study heavy in that field. In my case he said not to major in extractive metallurgy if I went back to school, but material science with a focus in extractive metallurgy. Mining goes in decades long cycles and if you are looking for a job in a downturn, you can get one easily somewhere else with the broader major while still being well qualified for what you want in a good job market. Nothing stays the same. Be able to adapt when needed.

      You're very welcome. The technique is specialized for gold less than 50 mesh. Coarser gold does better with a conventional reveal.

    Thank you! This is Wwaaaaayyyyy different then what I perfected for speed nugget recovery. I tried the pan into a pan and got sooooo much washing out. And the pyrite issue... Omg. THANK YOU!

      It works best on 50 mesh minus gold, Nuggets usually don't behave properly for my method, they tend to go to the bottom of the pan. Glad I can help.

    Few people would pay it but this is, at a minimum, $500.00 per hour material/education. A ten hour seminar would have a valuation of $5K... minimum!!
    Try to find this being taught at your "favorite" university, folks. Those "professors" can't even teach the subject matter that they're supposed to be trained to teach!!

    Great video! Your process provided the missing links that I needed to recover the fine gold from my ore that ranges from 100 to 200 mesh.

      Glad to help. I am using the process to test some ore we got in CA this week. I am then going to run the good bulk samples over my table today. For every 64 lbs of sample run, each 1 gram of gold recovered is equivalent to 1 Oz/t head grade.. Should be sending the owner a report later today.

    when I was learning, I used fishing weight, very small ones (lead), and would use three. I lose them in the dirt somewhere, then each time would get them back, so I knew I was doing good.

    You sir are awesome! I have just stumbled upon your channel:{ And I see you put it out back when I needed this info! I was a truck driver til Crohn's disease took me out in 2016 and since haven't worked more than 2 weeks steady and don't have the medical coverage to document disability. But just before I could no longer drive I ran Iowa to Washington state often. Along the way I stumbled on a rest area next to a stream in Montana that constantly glittered with extremely fine gold. There were fine bits embedded in rock as well. I brought home probably 100 lbs of mud and a bunch of the rock. I tried everything I could but could never separate out the gold. Since then I have been forced to move a few times, couldn't afford keeping my family in a home long. So now those materials are long gone. BUT I certainly am planning on heading west again soon as my daughter graduates HS in 6 months and I will just live off the land then. At least until I get to put these techniques into practice!

      Are you sure it isn't biotite mica? It can look very much like gold, but it behaves entirely different in the pan.

      @@hardrockuniversity7283 funny you should mention that I am about to watch your vid on gold - fools gold! I am not sure but it was heavy enough I could somewhat separate it with my clumsy technique. It did sink in water except in the stream I found it, that was almost whitewater it ran so fast. This was right below Deer Lodge in Montana and I got excited finding out that was the area gold was originally discovered in MT in the 1800's

      @@hardrockuniversity7283 There was a lot of black sand present. I also noticed A LOT of stones which I disregarded unfortunately. Red and green crystals, which I found out rubies and emeralds were not uncommon in that area

      @@robertkamenoff3918 Gold will behave quite differently than Mica in a pan with mica disappearing early on and even fine or flaky gold hanging in there and either mixing with the black sand or lying under it. Even with a lack of experience it should be fairly simple to identify mica. Chalcopyrite can be a little harder.

      Make sure to check out lesson 24 for the simplified version. BTW, this ONLY works on fine gold. The coarse gold slides to the near side of the pan. I am working on a method that recovers everything at the same time with one procedure.

      Not sure of the exact chemistry. It was a commercial pool clarifier sold at Home Depot.

    Panning down to the gold is nothing but "show & tell". Nice to do once in a while, but bad idea to make it a common practice. I'll just pan down to the concentrates and then use a Archimedian Wheel. Mine is a Desert Fox and it performs well.

      How much micro fine do you get? If the concentration is high enough, it can still pay well. You just need to use different extraction methods.

    Great Video and honestly you don't know helpful these lessons are. However a question. May father used to use a rule of thumb that was, if after your panning of a cup of crushed ore (say 20 to 25 mesh) you have a line of gold as thick as a pencil line and 1" long that represented an ounce of gold to the ton. Does that make any sense to you? Are there any other such rules of thumb. He did not use surfactant so he may have lost some fine gold that floated and got washed away.

      I would expect it to be wider, but about that long with my technique. He might have forced it more into the corner of the pan.

    So after you go side to side and tip it then it looks like your water line (when you are washing off the lights) you only let the water go half way up the sand. Is that right?

      That is correct. As you move the pan side to side while tilting away from your hand, the light materials travel across the bottom faster. At the bottom of the charge closest to my hand will tend to be a line of heavies- including the gold. By not letting the wash water get up that high, you protect the heavies while washing out the lighter materials. At 4:15 you can see the line of heavies I am talking about. You might also want to look at lesson 24 for a simpler method of getting the micro fine gold.

      There is too little information for me to be sure. If it is brown, it is most likely to be some form of iron oxide that is NOT magnetic. Some oxides of iron are magnetic and some are not.

      No problem at all Mohammad. I like teaching. Gold will look like clean brass. A gold/silver alloy (called electrum) can be pale yellow to silvery. You can practice your panning technique by mixing metal shaving with dirt and then panning down to the metal. It is much harder to learn if there is nothing to separate and identify.

    Here is a question I have about panning, when you put material in the pan and is good and wet, why can’t you tilt it backwards about 15% and used a vibrator like a square electric sander without sand paper on the bottom , instead of just shaking it

      The problem if frequency and amplitude. In wet panning, high frequency and small amplitude gives packing. Low frequency and large amplitude gives liquifaction. Been there, done that. Good idea, just doesn't work IRL.

      You have to be careful not to entrain particles between the black sand particles. I usually wait till near the very end if needed. Until then, they kind of 'protect' the gold. At least so it seems to me.

    Can you tell me how to get gold out of tullerides? I have tried crushing and end up with gold impregnated tulleride slimes. Some of which is 300 mesh. I have tried this technique for hours. I still end up with gold slimes that are contaminated with tailings. A y help will be appreciated

      If they are true tellurides you cannot use gravity methods to separate the gold. You have to use intermediate steps or alternative methods. Here is an article that goes over some of them.

      That is crushed hard rock ore with no concentration. Analysis of the ore showed no significant arsenic.
      What situation do you have? If you can describe what you are dealing with better, I can give you better advice.

      Well, that means you have about $100 per ton entrained value. To make a profit you must be able to mine and process the rock for well less than that. That would be very difficult for an undergound operation, but possible for a surface operation if the rock can be efficiently open pitted. What is the general size and shape of the formation?

      I thought that was 1 and 31/100 grams gold. One hundred thirty one grams is a whole lot different! Does "In one ton arsenic ore" mean "In one tone of ore that also contains arsenic"? or does that mean "In one ton of arsenic concentrates from the ore"? Either way it should be easy to come up with a profitable flow sheet.

      It is very ore dependent. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. That is why I am trying to develop my own design that works differently, but with similar physics. The variables are Throughput, Recovery %, and Purity of the cons. Every ore is different and each must be tested to determine the best technique.
      Annoyingly complex- but interesting.

      If they are sulfide cons, why not? It should free up the gold. Sometimes fine pulverization and gravity works well, sometimes roasting first, and sometimes you need to pulverize and then leach. It all depends on the ore.

      what are the dimensions? I'm guessing fine to micro fine. There tends to be a lot of other stuff to separate the gold from in electronic scrap, so they usually use a wet chemical system. There is a book "Recovery and Refining of Precious Metals" by C. W. Ammen that is very thorough including an entire chapter on 'Recovery and Refining Values From Secondary Sources' that addresses the issue in complete functional detail.
      It's a bit pricey, but well worth it.

      Their diameter can range from 15 micrometers to a few hundred micrometers. On average they are 1mm in length. I am thinking about incinerating the chips to ash then panning the gold bonding wires. Using acid or cyanide is out of my comfort zone.

      Hello,
      I can see there may be problems with language so we will go slowly and carefully.
      To start with I would suggest you view lesson 8 and lesson 24. Lesson 8 will show you some of the ways to identify real gold from fools gold and lesson 24 shows a simplified version of this panning technique that works much faster and easier.
      I am assuming from you message that you have fine (small) gold in sand or gravel and you need help identifying it for sure and recovering it if it is really gold. Let's take the easy one first: gold behaves differently in the pan from other materials because it is so dense. It really likes to stay where it's at and moves more slowly than similar sized particles of anything else. Almost all gold in sand and gravel (placer gold) will be yellow and all will be dense. Because of that any shiny yellow particles that resist movement better than everything else in the pan are almost certainly gold. The only natural mineral that would be easy to confuse it with is chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). Even then, the difference in density is obvious to an experienced panner (which I assume you are not). Therefore a second easy test is possible: Take some of the yellow particles and put them in a spoon you can dispose of, heat the spoon from below with a torch until it is glowing red, and keep it glowing for a few minutes. Chalcopyrite will quickly oxidize to a non-shiny material- usually brown- with the smell of burning sulfur. Gold will not change at red heat.
      How much yellow material is there in the sand? Is any of it big enough to try to flatten with a hammer?

      I primarily use this to test samples for total gold content. For example, it works well for what i call speed prospecting where I am testing the samples as I am taking them to quickly focus in on the best material. In that situation it takes about 5 minutes per sample.

      When cleaning dredge cons in Idaho the fastest method was a secondary concentration with a gold cube (no detectable losses) followed by hand panning to a clean concentrate which took about half an hour more. Wayne had the best cleanup panning.

      I used to buy the 'Pool Clarifier' sold at Lowe's by the gallon, but it is no longer available in the gallons. On my trip, I ran out and in Oregon neither Lowe's or Home Depot. had pool chemicals, but WalMart did have Chlorox brand. I haven't tested it yet as I never had a true production run to get through. Whatever you try, make sure to test any effects on recovery with YOUR ore.

      Very fine gold can actually float on water. Gold, like many metals and sulfide minerals tends to repel water like a freshly waxed car. Because of this a small gold particle can get on top of the water and float there. This lets it literally float away.
      Jet dry acts like a detergent to make the water 'wet' the gold and keep it under water. Dawn dish washing detergent does well also but creates more suds (bubbles) that cause problems during the final steps.
      Gold large than 100 mesh usually doesn't float, but can if it is coated with oil. For that reason you want to keep oils and greases away from your ore and process water.

    Never consider pyrite as tailings. Always keep your pyrite, most often it holds a nice percentage of gold. Throw it all in together and let the aqua regia do it job and almost double your payday. Pyrite is a great friend not an enemy. We have a saying in Arizona which is only a fool throws away his fools gold

      It definitely should be tested. If the ore has both gold and pyrite, you are almost certain to be correct.

    This also works for dry panning and even for materials with small weight differences. While trying out this method(practicing but I don't really have mountains or gold here) I could also split different types of sand from each other with it.

      Very fine gold has difficulty penetrating the surface tension of the mercury. I have used small plate amalgamation for sampling in the past. Total labor per sample is about 20-30 minutes. Total time per sample is about 60 minutes. You use mercury and nitric acid and make soluble mercury compounds. This takes a total of less than ten minutes per sample, uses no hazardous materials, and leaves no hazardous waste.
      IMO this is, on balance, far superior for rough assaying in real time.

I have a problem: I the metal is in a clay (bentonite), when I pan it I get a mix of gold, silver, iron, quartz, and other metals that doesn't melt with nitric acid (I have a suspicion of platinum perhaps?), The problem is that I can see gold leafs with a 60x lens and it is not heavy, so I still find those leafs in the washed clay (Wich by the way I don't want to contaminate with cianide)... Any suggestion? Greetings and thank you

      @@oportillo02 How can it be gold and not be heavy? Perhaps it LOOKS like gold, but isn't? If you have the reagents, try dissolving with aqua regia (beware of toxic fumes!). Gold WILL dissolve in aqua regia, but not nitric acid..
      I would guess that what you are seeing may be biotite mica. It can look a lot like gold, but it is not dense and will be in flakes and sheets.

      Yeah, dawn has its limitations. With this, I can keep the suds enough under control to do the preliminary panning, but I can see how they would quickly get out of control on a wheel. Did you try jetdry?
