    "Tuvan throat-singing", or khoomei, is an ancient pastime in the steppes of Tuva, a country nestled between Mongolia and Russia. For thousands of years, herders and farmers there have taught their children to sing in the khoomei way. Huun Huur Tu, a group that formed when the Soviet Iron Curtain fell, are the undisputed worldwide masters of khoomei music. Bearing the beauty of their voices and an assortment of instruments whose names we don't know (including a pair of shakers made from bull testicles and a percussion piece made of horse hooves), they act as ambassadors to a timeless way of life, evoking the wild and natural world of Tuva with their music. We met them at Royce Hall in Los Angeles.

      the soviet union didn't ban this, at least not in the late USSR, multiculturalism and racial mixing/teamwork was heavily focused on in the soviet union. I recall propaganda posters of mixed races and cultures joining hands in the "fight for socialism" as they would describe it

    Nobody banned ethnic music. Religion was just not welcomed in USSR, because we were too busy to create equal society and religion clash could disturb Soviet ideas. This music is spiritual that’s why it was banned. However playing ethnic music instrument was not banned

    • @isthereworms
      @isthereworms 7 лет назад +18

      Actually, no, not even debatable. Sayan Bapa, a Tuvan man, says in this video that Tuva is "On the border with Russia and Mongolia". And Tuvan culture like this persisted in spite of Soviet suppression, not because of it...

    • @coolskillz13
      @coolskillz13 7 лет назад +2

      but... you just claimed something without proof, saying since your area benefitted so must every other region that was suppressed by soviets. even early on in this video, it's pointed out that soviets tried to suppress this form of music and culture.

    • @ДенисЧеремисов
      @ДенисЧеремисов 7 лет назад +5

      > you just claimed something without proof
      "Proof" is too long for YT, you need to know about:
      1) Territorial division in Russian empire (governorates, colonies, etc)
      2) Territorial division in the Soviet union, which was made in order to support local minorities and their cultures.
      3) What was guaranteed for national republics and then for autonomous republics within national republics.
      > it's pointed out that soviets tried to suppress this form of music and culture.
      LOL, "but it was written, this means it is truth!".
      Sayan Bapa didn't tell this. This was just a text written by yet another anglo-saxon. You anglo-saxons have a long tradition of blaming others for your own sins without any a slightest attempt to check how close this to the reality. You enclosed natives in tiny reservations against their will and then automatically believes everyone is the same (bad), except you are still good ones, because you are good ones.

    • @isthereworms
      @isthereworms 7 лет назад +4

      traveltuva.com/cultural-tours/tuvan-throat-singing/: "In post-Soviet Tuva, throat singing has come to signify a re-emergence of formerly suppressed Tuvan culture." From a website pretty certainly run by Tuvans... Maybe they're lying though, just as a strange and humorous way to say 'thank you' to Russia for saving their culture ;-) That must be it...

    • @ДенисЧеремисов
      @ДенисЧеремисов 7 лет назад +2

      > From a website pretty certainly run by Tuvans..
      No: "TravelTuva is an international collaboration between Cultural Transformations LLC and the Tuvan Ministry …"
      Cultural Transformations LLC and TravelTuva.com are run by Eliot Stone.
      In other words, yet another anglo-saxon with strange idea every other nation commits suicide on natives and then force them into reservations like you always do wherever you come to: British isles (genocide of celtic population), North America, Australia, Tasmania (just killed all locals), etc.The only exception is New Zealand, where maori has rights and noticeable influence and representation in culture in government.

      It is a Republic of the Russian Federation, but "no borders between" and "is russia" is not the same thing. I have a friend who always shakes his head about the russian nationalists in his hometown near the kazakh border.. He says: "They run around and say 'russia to the russians', but they aren´t even remotely russian themselves."
