This is my FAVORITE ever musical piece... it moves my spirit so that I break out into tears... anyway, this is BEAUTIFULLY recorded- I like being able to see the entire orchestra at once as in love viewing, but what a blessing to see the closeups of conductor, performers and sections! Good god almighty, this piece is inspired... well done to the recorders, the orchestra and conductor. BRAVO!!

Sinopoli was a truly great conductor who left us far too soon. Does anyone know the date of this recording? This performance is certainly on par with the studio recording of 1981 by Karajan and Berlin.

Volle Sympathie !

At 7:57 I see 12 off stage horns (along with offstage Trp & Trb) being played ONstage, muted. That's cheating, isn't it? No, I didn't expect 12 horns (there are only 3 actual parts), but how about getting some guys up in the balcony? That would have been cool.
Nevertheless, Strauss and Sinopoli are magic. There is always a thread of lyricism in his interpretations, no matter how noisy Strauss gets. He has one of the greatest Salome's, with Malfitano and Terfel. Fortunately, it is preserved on DVD and on youtube.

Not quite: granted the Dresden Staatskapelle has a wonderful and unique sound which is all its own and would still be there if there was a kangaroo at the conductor's desk (altho' whether it would be after ten years of Herr Kangaroo.....that would be an interesting, but probably not worthwhile experiment!) But Sinopoli's tempi and direction are different from other conductors and do work well together with the orchestra's own qualities.
