    In addition to all of the other improvements, making it so that pokemon moves are treated as equippable abilities from a total catalog of learned moves is an incredible upgrade compared to the old system.

    Gonna be completely honest, one of the most appealing aspects of this game for me is the quality of life changes. There's been so much downtime in mainline Pokemon that it's been way too slow for me. Here, they fixed basically all of that. Pokemon battles start and end faster, all Pokemon earn experience on the side after battles, catching Pokemon is much faster (which is very important for a game like this), Pokemon can swap moves that they learned without talking to a specific person, and there's probably more I'm forgetting.
    Basically, this game saves a lot of time and that is actually a very appealing part of this game.

    • @Howitchewstofeel5gum
      @Howitchewstofeel5gum 3 года назад +16

      Definitely! It makes for a much more seamless experience and arguably, many of these changes could and should have been implemented generations ago.

    Would love a Legends series that take place at different eras & regions. Kind of like how Pokemon Generations/ Evolutions focuses on key moments. A game that takes place in Kanto during the war predating Red/Blue where you work as a research intern, cataloguing Pokemon to help the researchers in their cloning process to create an ultimate weapon to win the war. A Johto game where you work for the ancient Sprout Tower, with a story all centered around the Unown and the events of Ecruteak city, culminating in the people learning a dark truth and swearing themselves to monkhood. Unova has the long ago war started by the twin brothers, there could be a game featuring Ultra Megalopolis, the ideas write themselves. Hell, if its retreating too much ground they could tie in an anime location for the first time, taking place in Arborville
    or the Kingdom of Rota. There's so much potential for this as an ongoing series and I hope they really let themselves take more risks.

  • @LauraPlatt
    @LauraPlatt 3 года назад +12

    I think a highlight for me has been the fact that you can take things at your own pace, and there's a HUGE wealth of content to explore. Usually I find myself absolutely blasting through each new Pokémon game, but with this I'm about 45 hours in and still only on the 3rd area, which is so wild to me. Each new Pokémon - even one's I've caught, or evolved before - have been so exciting for me to see in the wild, watch how they react, see their new moves, fill out their Pokédex entry, etc. Also, I feel like I've spent so much time even with Pokémon I usually just skip over?? I've never been invested in doing much other than acquiring a team of 5 or 6 party members, but this time I've had multiple boxes full of Pokémon I've had on rotation!
    I also think having the world be less densely packed has made it easier for me to get into it - I've found a lot of modern open world games stifling with how much content that is packed everywhere that you can't avoid (it makes it feel like a job to me). With the long-term content here relegated mostly to isolated locations in-game - the Pokédex, the village, your boxes, etc - there's nothing in the way of just having a fun time exploring and catching or battling anything I come across. It's definitely flawed and a little messy in places, but if they tighten things up in a sequel or successor I think it would be the best entry in the series, without question. Also catching with motion controls a la Splatoon has been seriously fun for me!

    Been having a great time with it, way surpassed my expectations, but I have one kind of big criticism.
    So I made the mistake of checking out a different open world game yesterday and it hit me with a big moment of "Oh... that's right." A reality check.
    So if you look at most other high profile open world games set in nature, be it Horizon or Red Dead or even Ubi's Immortals Phoenix Rising (still a bad name btw) or whatever else , the wildlife, both the passive and "enemies" and have lives. When not being hassled by the player predators are hunting prey, robot deer are tilling fields while the little guys are doing guard patrols, crocodiles are basking, birds are flocking, they fight each other, animals interact with the world and each other in ways that, depending on the game, either have real mechanical momentum or are at least cool window dressing that obfuscates that deer you're about to kill as an actual animal and not just mats for a new wallet.
    The Pokemon do nothing. They just sort of listlessly idle about waiting for your to catch or fight them. At most you'll find one sleeping, which honestly is super dope and something they should have done way more of.
    The Pokemon are the stars here and they pale in comparison to the back ground wildlife of an average open world game. They're lifeless.
    Bidoofs should be playing with each other. Bird Pokemon should be taking flight when a predator type comes strolling up. The game was never going to look as good but I wish they'd taken a hard look at how Horizon Zero Dawn really went to the mat in characterizing it's monsters and really making them believable as creatures existing in the world completely divorced from the player. Or hell, even just look at Monster Hunter Rise.
    Really truly like the game, definitely going to keep playing it. Loads of fun. But they still feel way behind the industry in so far as open world design goes. And don't give me the "It's a Switch game" excuse. Tons of games on Switch do stuff just like this. Phoenix Rising looks even worse (on Switch) then Arceus and still get's this part right :P
    For a first attempt though? My expectations and faith in them definitely went up a notch based on this one.

    In SwSh and Let's Go I could sweep through the entire game with just my starter if I wanted to- I'm glad I now have a reason to switch to different party members because it feels like type matchups have more weight than other games. I even have a little notebook with notes on the type matchups so that I don't have to look it up if I forget, because the types actually feel like they matter now. If I send in the wrong type, my mon gets ohko'd. I haven't lost a battle/blacked out yet in my so far 30+ hours of playing, but I've gotten extremely close. Closer than in previous games.
    The way it feels like this game respects your time and intelligence more than the other games is a huge improvement, too. I know that Sp. Atk and Atk are both offensive stats, there's no need to list them both individually if they both go up, and finally this game fixes that. And I agree, just showing the experience gained and level ups on the side of the screen does so much for the pace of the game when you're so used to having to slog through a dozen text boxes completely stopping the game in its tracks. I'm an impatient person by nature, I want the game not forcefully pause my game to tell me things that could easily just be HUD elements. And Legends finally does that, and the game flows so much more smoothly than any other Pokemon game I've ever played. Are there still a few points that are a little slow for me? Yes, but they're much fewer and further between than the older games and that makes them far less frustrating.
    The worst thing about this game, to me, is the graphics, and they aren't even that bad. They're perfectly passable, and though textures of faraway cliffs look ugly as sin, the terrain around you still looks fine, and the beautiful skybox somewhat makes up for the low-poly world below. The fact that I can see all the Pokemon and items on the ground from up high and far away is worth the lower visual quality, solves the weird pop-in thing that SwSh had where Pokemon would just suddenly appear when you got close enough.
    It's going to be really hard to go back to playing a game with the classic formula after Legends, and I think Gamefreak knows that. Legends feels like a test run for something greater that they might be working on; it's rough around the edges but it's an amazing game for what it is.

    Thematically, I feel like the "barren" world makes a lot of sense, in a way? Yes, I think some more varied terrains or potentially smaller settlements or something out in the open would be good to break up the environments, but at the same time I kind of feel like it helps to sell the Hisui region as this relatively empty place where people don't venture out of the Jubilife settlement because they're genuinely afraid of the Pokemon out in the field. I'm not trying to find an excuse for the game, as it definitely has some presentation issues, but I just felt like it made a lot of sense that the worlds were pokemon and little else - you wouldn't catch me running around if a giant ass Snorlax might eviscerate me with a Hyper Beam!

    I think the primary reason it feels lifeless and barren compared to BOTW is the details, when you move through the zelda world the grass and trees flow in the wind there are embers floating on the wind, leaves flow and dance on the wind honestly these details are amazingly immersive and make you feel like you are in this magical world. Now I am not sure why all these little details that really do a lot to make the world feel alive are not in arceus but I imagine it has a lot to do with the fact the map has to be a template for random spawning mons. I don't know for sure, but hopefully if they make another one like this they can add these little deatils.

    I like - This is finally a fully 3D Pokémon game. It drove me nuts in Sword&Shield to have very little camera movement up and down in the wild area. The revamped move system. Pokémon now learn move lists and you can swap moves at will. There is no more having to grind for heart scales! I love this change so much. You can sneak up on Pokémon to catch them. I don't like - the performance issues with the game. The limited items system. I wish items that can't go into your satchel would just go into box storage. I wish it was easier to travel among the areas. If I wanted to say go from Cobalt Coastlands back to Obsidian Fieldlands, you have to speak to the professor, do the evaluation, go back to Jublife Village, then go to Obsidian Fieldlands. I want more trainer battles. They do come up from time to time, but I want more of them. What they could do is have the other Galaxy team members present optional battles rather than if they spot you, they will challenge you.

    For the idea on limiting ride Pokémon, what about an altered version of the old HM system? Where you get the ability to use a ride Pokémon - but you have to have a Pokémon that can do that kind of ride in your party? So you have to go out and find a rideable Pokémon in order to gallop, or surf, or fly.
    Of course, it doesn't take up a move slot like that used to, but that way you're connecting with your Pokémon more. You don't ride around on a random wyrdeer, you ride around on the arcanine you caught a a growlithe and evolved.
    You get the exact same functionality, but the Pokémon is yours.

    I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this game is the new jumping off point for future mainline games, it feels like they have been slowly testing new ideas for the future of the series ever since switch released.
    First we had sword and shield where they got to practice a fully 3d environment and added in the wild area were pokemon were fully modelled in the overworld, and we could move and ride freely. Then we got the 2 dlc areas which were entirely based off the wild area with all pokemon fully modelled and all areas free roaming.
    Now with legends arceus it feels like they have come full circle and are ready to test all these mechanics in one big game, hopefully this will continue to be a big success and the future of the series embraces theese changes.
    All I want now is for voice acting to be introduced for characters and for pokemon cries, after all in sword and shield they used the voice clips for Pikachu and Evee so it can be done. I would also like to see a graphical evolution for the next entry but that is really the least of my wants as while I can very much appreciate nice graphics it's not essential for me as gameplay and storytelling always come first. Lastly following pokemon, I want it back so that I can chill with my pokemon and gave them follow me on foot in a fully 3d environment.

      I think there are two counters here. The first, and most important, is that BotW is literally one of the best reviewed games of all time. It topped many Game of the Decade lists and made almost every journalists list at the least. It was also chosen as game of the decade by more gaming journalists than not. So you comparing a game to it is a disservice to the game because it is setting an unrealistic expectation. It's like comparing every basketball player to Michael Jordan. Secondly, even though BotW had those things they are all kinda not really anything, if that makes sense? I just did a play through in late Decemeber/Early January and you do find a Korok on the top of most mountains but also, it is literally getting to the top of the mountain, picking up a rock then getting the korok. So while you do get something, it isn't actually anything because the act of getting is a single button press. So you found something new but it lasted for about 1.5 seconds then it is done with. Not to say that it isn't important because it is but also I think it is worth noting that in BotW you can find about 50 korok seeds that involve nothing more than picking up a rock so that isn't really depth.

I do agree though, it would be nice if there was more in the world, but for me the act of just being a Pokemon researcher is a ton of fun and enough for the price point. The fact of the matter is though, GF will never have a 6 year gap between mainline games like Zelda can have. The Pokemon Company won't allow it. @@ragreenburg I'm not arguing whether it's a bad game or not or whether people should enjoy it but i don't think that their development time should be a huge excuse, I agree it plays a factor but there are RPGs like Fallout New Vegas which was rushed out in 18 months and that game has a ton to do and things to find, and i also think that in 3 yrs of development I find it hard to believe they couldn't have made it more interesting, not as huge or filled like BOTW but they could've added things like maybe dungeons, in the form of caves to find Pokemon maybe specifically in that area or just cool sights

    As for someone who enjoys story. I do think this did a great balancing job between the openness of the world and the story. And i found neither were overwhelming either. Which is great. It makes me actually want to do both the story and exploration without me losing interest in either which is huge for my adhd brain.

    the fact it doesn't need a second copy to trade with sells it for me. sword and shield got pretty ridiculous with 2 60 dollar games and 2 30 dollar dlcs (because they each need different dlcs) almost 200 bucks is too much to catch a bunch of pokemon you don't even want for the sake of completion

    I got this game for my Grandson who just turned 7. I REALLY wish they would have used voice acting. I had to read everything to him in the beginning and it was brutal. They claim these games are for kids but the ones that are still learning to read can't play by themselves. At least not until you get through the overly dragged out tutorial. He can play the game itself fine so it's not like he's too young for it. Luckily he slept over so we were able to get through the beginning before he went home. Other than that it's great. For me, this is what I thought a pokemon game should be like and I'll be playing this one myself.

      I wouldnt worry too much about that actually. But great that you are helping! Was around the same age when Red and Blue came, and speaking as someone from a non English speaking country, everyone made it through those games eventually. Sure, it was tough at times, but as a kid you do not mind running around exploring a whole new world.
      As a kid I initially had no motivation learning to read, but that quickly came with Pokemon, and even learned English before we had it in school.

    My insane left-field hope for this game is that they drop a whopper DLC that expands on core systems. I want a bit more depth overall I think. The game is obviously phenomenal, but a bit more RPG in my RPG can't hurt. Would love to see much more detailed cave systems to explore as well.

    As a long time fan of this generation even going so far as to read all the 11 manga books. I feel like this game is pretty good but they managed to make the lakes, these amazing beautiful parts of the story and world, into these almost completely irrelevant circles of water pushed off to the side with a rock in the middle that literally serves no purpose aside from catching the lake pokemon really easily late game. Very disappointed by how they treated the world in this game, it's supposed to be Sinnoh but it barely feels like it if you know what i mean?

    I am enjoying Arceus so far! Maybe only a few hours in, but I can already see somethings that I would personally change about it. Being someone who's played Pokémon since the 90s, I really think Gamefreak needs to give us more lol we're still waiting for a more online, co-op friendly game; I just think it would be so cool to traverse the Pokémon world with your friends, just like in the anime, double battle, trade, capture Pokémon together... ahh, but that is just a dream.
    Not to say Arceus isn't good on its own, but I am hoping it'll get some patching done soon. In my game, I've noticed that the grass kind of twitches around in battles, and some of the textures are pretty blurry in docked mode, or even just too squared out. Like in a cutscene with Wyrdeer, you can see the rocks he stands on, are just off-looking, imo. Maybe it's just my TV.. but.. they could have made it look better. I would have waited another month or so for them to clean it up 😂 just my opinion though

Stop telling me I can’t go there and connect the areas! Make it so I have to accomplish something big to access certain regions… but then once I do, they are forever connected.

    Alex, the reason why starters feel less overpowered in this game is because the mainline series would buff them with Abilities that would increase the power of their S.T.A.B. moves. Since Legends: Arceus removed Abilities, that buff is no longer present.

    • @_Conzo_
      @_Conzo_ 3 года назад

      Well, those abilities would only kick in when they were on low health. I think the reason for starters (and every Pokémon on one's team) feeling underpowered is due to a wider overhaul of the game's mechanics to make for a more challenging experience.
