Oh my God that scepticism hits too hard.
It’s still real in 2021 as it was in 1981. Unfortunately.
All those we lost....... So many stories of the people from that time are not told/forgotten. A whole generation of gay men almost wiped out and the people who helped care for them when so many had no family and no-one else would. This drama tells it so well. It’s a tough watch but I hope it gets the recognition it deserves. Joyous, thought provoking and heart breaking. Excellent.
Well said
Have never cried so much watching anything before feel so emotional, the writing and acting are brilliant
As a 27 year old gay guy this really struck a massive chord with me. So many of us really don’t understand how AIDS impacted our community in the 80s. How many beautiful soles were lost to that terrible disease. I wish I could spend a few hours with each of them to hear their stories as I’m sure many of them would parallel my own in so many ways. So sad ❤️❤️❤️ what a great show, eye opening and heart wrenching and caused me to want to take a long hard look in the mirror!
Fair play that you’re gay, but do you really have to call your channel name “gay astray” ??
It’s like you base your whole existence on being gay.
This scene is fantastic, it's so well shot and Olly's a really great actor
So I watched it and couldn't stop sobbing
Watched all the episodes in a few hours and it's so sad but really well made, just really good attention to detail and well written story.

Definitely everything the guy in this clip said is true every theory was postulated as to what caused AIDS .....paranoia was rampant and Gays paid a heavy price.
Is it the same with Covid19 in 2021 ? Are certain social groups being blamed for the origins and spread of the virus, especially by sections of the mainstream media ?
They also paid a heavy price by sleeping around and practising unsafe
@@HaTer-xs8sh give it a rest victim blaming, this was men coming to terms with their sexuality in a world that didn’t accept them. There was so much misinformation, medical experts didn’t want to talk about it bc of the stigma of it being attached to being gay, little information and research and the mainstream media vilified them and implied that it was just.

I don’t remember hearing many conspiracy theories at the time (although I’m sure there were plenty).
What I do remember was the brutal inhumanity towards terminally ill people.
Reactionary bigots weren’t hiding their enthusiasm about the idea of a virus that killed Africans, gay people and drug users.
This looks fantastic. I believe the show was filmed in October 2019, so it's interesting the 'heavy scepticism towards an all-too-real illness' element will play more harshly now, in 2021. Very excited for some great Russell T Davies characters!
He doesn’t know how to write characters. He bases them off on stereotypes.
@@HaTer-xs8sh Have you even seen Banana? It takes stereotypes and throws them out of the window. One of his best works & I'm hoping It's a Sin will be just as good
@@jakesalter3725 oh really? Every character on their was a stereotype!! He can’t even write black characters properly. There’s one black character on this show and yet again he’s made it to be caricature, over the top sassy queen.
@@HaTer-xs8sh Ok ngl I've just had a think and you're right about Banana, a lot of the characters though not all are based on stereotypes like Dean being the hyper-fem PoC gay or Freddie being the hypersexual bi that'll fuck anything, both harmful stereotypes to their communities. Hopefully Russel gives his characters more depth here but only time will tell I guess.
Actually I mean, they have depth but they still fit with common ideals of what people think LGBTQIA+ people are. Hopefully they're more than just one note is what I should've said

It was filmed just before all the crap started
By the way, if you liked the It's a Sin series, I highly recommend the Swedish miniseries Don't Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves (Torka Aldrig Tårar Utan Handskar). Thematically it is very similar - about a group of gay friends affected by the AIDS epidemic. There is also, for example, a young boy who comes to a big city and starts enjoying "being gay", homophobia… It's in a slightly different mood, but it's also very good and it's very interesting to compare it with It's a Sin.
I'll definitely check that out. Thanks for the recommendation!

I think Russell didn't get the ending right though.
I think it would have had more impact if it had focused on Jill and all she did and tried to do, and all the losses. The ending made Richie's the most important death and the rest didn't matter at all.
Err they did make Gloria and Colins death matter. It's just happened that Richie died last. The whole series was focused on each of them.

I agree, with the critical difference that in 1981 the AIDS virus wasn't even isolated yet and in 2021 we have the Internet and we know so much more about COVID-19 than the people at the time ever could know about AIDS.
This looks fruiter than Boy George in a bath full of pineapples.
Lmao
Or Boy George in a bath full of pineapples, massaging Andy Bell's back! Lol
It actually looks kinda meh. Like, it looks like its trying to be shocking or impactful or carry a message that's already decades old (no, I don't mean the HIV thing). Its not suprising anyone.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy RTDs work, Doctor Who especially, but this just looks like yet another 'good looking young gay guy doing cliche gay things and maybe gets into trouble and learns something.' I mean, can we do better at this point? Can we speak to some other experiences please? What about those of us who arent the generic good looking people living it up and clubbing and having casual sex?
Also, can we stop with the 'GAY character' thing. Can we define a character by something other than their gayness? Maybe I'm expecting too much since its a show that probably about the gay experience, but I can't help but think that it'd be better for society to have more "just happens to be" kinds of characters. People would better served seeing gay people in contexts other than clubs and bars and dirty bedrooms. UGH.
THIS!!!

You're only saying this because I don't like the look of it and said so. Somehow, you feel that you must defend it for reasons I won't attempt to guess at.
I don’t think u could have a gay period piece set in 1980s without clubs, bars, and dirty bedrooms. Clubs and Bars were the only sanctuary for most gays and should be a focal point. Rant begins - It sad the last 10 years gay clubs and bars are closing, as gays of all different types gather at these places. Instead we pretend we are more evolved now, becoming more mainstream and fitting into straight culture while denouncing gay culture of the past. We have limited our interactions with other types of gay and hide behind dating apps. In some ways, it feels like we want to fit into straight society so badly we now act gay friendly to the straight world and closeted gay whores in the dark.

I loathed the Richie character. Were we sposed to or is it just the actor who is irritating?
He wasn't the most appealing character in the group, that's for sure. However, there was a 'Richie' in every gay pub/bar/club through the early days of HIV/AIDS, they who would see government plots everywhere which were designed to attack the 'gay community'. I still clearly recall a guy in my local, back then, who would tell anyone who'd listen to 'just don't sleep with Americans' as a way to avoid the virus! As to whether or not Ollie Alexandra is irritating in 'real life' I can't say as I don't know enough about him.
@@popazz1 I agree. This was a real eye opener for me, seeing guys being mouth to mouth, playing tonsil hockey, this after having read about the 'gay plague'. Gay people are a minority, straight people aren't oppressed or get death threats and are not a criminal in 74 countries for what they identify as. I do think gay actors should be casted as gay characters a lot more but I wouldnt say straight people shouldn't play as gay characters, I think there's a bit of a line and sometimes the way they act as a gay character comes across a bit cringy
