The song "True" has been sampled in many songs including Queen Pen’s 1998 hit “It’s True” and Nelly’s “’N’ Dey Say” in 2004. It was a No.1 US Billboard Hot 100 hit for PM Dawn in 1991 as “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” and a Top 10 single as “You” on the US Billboard Hot 100 for R&B artist Lloyd featuring Lil Wayne in 2006. Great tune. Back in my day, it was played at all the school dances. Love watching you react to these great old tunes I grew up with. Keep doing what you do, man.
Spandau Ballet took their name from Spandau Prison in Berlin, Germany, where seven Nazi prisoners were kept after WWII. Rudolf Hess was the last of these, dying in 1987; the prison was then demolished. The ballet referred to how a hanged man twitches after the drop during execution.
All true. The prison was kept in service with a skeleton staff for years, when Hess was the sole surviving prisoner. The authorities were waiting for him to die, before closing Spandau prison for good.
Give it up for Tony Hadley, lead singer of Spandau! Still performing at a young 60, Tony exited Spandau in July 2017. He's a strapping 6'4", 245 lbs. Last year, Tony was one of the vocalists performing on the single "The Best Christmas (in Lockdown)," a charity assembly of about 100 celebrities recording for the Hertfordshire-based Electric Umbrella organization.
It's pronounced "span-dow". Check out "Gold" by them. And please, please, please react to some Duran Duran sometime! Spandau & Duran were "rivals" back in the day. And yes this is the song PM Dawn sampled in "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss". The singer, Tony Hadley, even makes a cameo at the end of their video.
I never knew this band. My older sisters husband is a lot older and the 80’s were his heyday. He had all the Duran Duran cd’s and I used to borrow them bc I fell in love with early 80’s post punk pop and 80’s alternative. Everything from Duran Duran to Souxie & the banshees. (Also I have to mention how Souxie is the baddest btch. She’s like 70 and still gorgeous. I stan. Everyone talks about Debbie Harry but Souxie doesn’t seem to get the same attn.)
When you think of soft sexy soulful music you can't help but think of Marvin, Teddy and Smoky...my trio. True was such a hit...played a lot on the radio. This is what song you grab your girl and move her across the dance floor to. ✌

I love watching this channel and getting a new perspective. Growing up I just put this song into the new wave genre but after watching the reaction I think this is more properly a soul song and now I love it in a whole new way.
Span-Dow Ballet. It's so clean & clear...great choice! Yes, they are the originators of this song. Professor of Rock: Interview with Tony Hadley tells the story of "True".
Because they weren't getting paid for digital royalties, PM Dawn rerecorded Set Adrift and put it on digital platforms like Spotify and Pandora. It's absolutely horrific. The lead singer's soft, smooth voice is gone. The 2 group members harmonize like fighting cats who are both dying. I had to delete it from my playlist because it's unlistenable. It sucks that they can't get paid for the original, but my goodness...stay away from the rerecorded version.
Much of the British Second Invasion (Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Human League) brought on by MTV was steeped in American Soul/Disco and R&B . This song is a perfect example of that
Everytime I watched one of your videos I can't help but laugh and smile. You just exude kindness and light. You'd be the dude that I'd love to hang out with.
This song was also featured in the film "Sixteen Candles" with Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall (one of my fave films growing up). The song was featured in the scene when Molly Ringwald and her friend just get to the school dance and she sees the guy of her dreams dancing with his girlfriend, the most popular girl in the school. This song fits this movie so well. Good song and good movie.
They are the originators. Recently I saw an interview with the singer and he was asked about all of the times the song has been sampled. He loves it. He's one of the artists who instantly understood that sampling wasn't theft it was an homage, a nod, to the original. Neil Peart from Rush said that he never got tired of playing their song Tom Sawyer because it was so challenging and he always tried to play it perfectly it never quite could. Similarly, this singer said he has never gotten tired of playing this song live because 1) the crowd would tear the house down if they didn't play it, and 2) It's a difficult song for him to sing and it's always a challenge. 80's Brit pop stayed closer to pop's soul roots while American pop attach the more to the rock and roll side of its origins. Actual sold music as American but the Brits have always done the offshoots better than American bands.
Yes they are the originators of this song.. this is a song that you must really listen to lyrics.. it get to the ❤️ heart.. And they are so good in concert..
This song was so popular in the 80’s they played it on all the R&B Soul stations, we hade what they call “ The Quiet Storm” where they just played love songs and slow grooves after 12 midnight and this was played every night several times. Slow songs and love songs(or laid back grooves ) is what’s BEEN missing in music after the 90’s, the only song like this to hear today is Leave The Door Open, which is a great start, but y’all need more,is old schoolers want y’all to feel what we felt, just like you felt in this video when you heard it.
Spandau Ballet was one of my favorite bands when the new wave hit. First song I heard was Paint Me Down, which blew me away. Lifeline is incredible as is Chant #1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On). Great stuff!
I totally loved your reaction to this because to me you’re watching part of my childhood. I really hope you listen to more by Spandau Ballet. So many great hits in the U.K. My absolute favourite of theirs is ‘Chant number one’ closely followed by ‘Gold’ and ‘Through the barricades’. Please keep reacting to their stuff.
Bro, this led me down a rabbit hole, I’ve heard this song a million times but never actually listened to the band, they actually have a ton of good music. Thanks for the rabbit hole 👍🏻
Spandau Ballet kicked butt with Chant No. 1, “True” was a complete departure! Also the “all night long” duo is the Kemp brothers-who are also actors. Gary and Martin Kemp.
This guys right here should be making stand ups and funny shows… Everything he says and the way he’s says it it’s just so funny ! 🤣 Love his reactions!
The Brits have always had a love and respect for Soul. You might want to check out ABC's, When Smokey Sings. Take a guess as to who this is paying tribute to.
One of the problems with sampling bits of songs in new songs is that the original artists' names often get lost to time, or people think the original singers borrowed of the borrowers instead of vice-versa. It was fun to share the groove with you; this is good music.

Great tune. Back in my day, it was played at all the school dances. Love watching you react to these great old tunes I grew up with. Keep doing what you do, man.
ABC; Look of Love, Poison Arrow, When Smokey Sings, Blow Monkeys; Diggin your Scene, You don't own me (soundtrack of Dirty Dancing).
True ( pardon the pun) but depressing.
Wow. Never knew that.
Wow, love hearing these crazy facts about music....thanks!
😦
I love Spandau Ballet. One of the best groups of music's best era.
Aha were also big rivals of Duran Duran too.
Gold is definitely another good one.
If they took the name from the Berlin District Spandau, it should be "Shpandhau", with both "a" pronounced like in "dark"
Yes! GOLD!💖
When you think of soft sexy soulful music you can't help but think of Marvin, Teddy and Smoky...my trio. True was such a hit...played a lot on the radio. This is what song you grab your girl and move her across the dance floor to. ✌
This was called "Sophisti-pop". Spandau Ballet, Simply Red, Sade, Bryan Ferry, Level 42, etc.... I love it! 💜💜
“With a thrill in my hand, and a pill on my tongue”. I’m not sure how this was never used in a Viagra commercial.
Because Ecstasy already cornered the market?
😆
This song is about someone committing suicide, In 1991, this song was prominently sampled on the P.M. Dawn track "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss," which singer Gary Kemp received a writing credit for. The song was a massive worldwide hit, peaking at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 that November, and having the unique distinction of being the first #1 song after Billboard updated its metrics to include airplay from Nielsen SoundScan. Nelly sampled it again for his hit "N Dey Say." Then rapper Silk Da Shocker sampled it for his hit "Be There."
Lol...lol
Brilliant!
Can’t hear this song without seeing Steve Buscemi’s face from the Wedding Singer 😂
I can't help but picturing Phil Dunphy. Spandau Ballet! Spandau Ballet!
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh,THANKS!!!! Now I'M going to too!!!😂
😆👍
everytime
Love this song! Yes this is their song. Was a #1 song for them here in Canada. ♥️🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦🇨🇦
I love watching this channel and getting a new perspective. Growing up I just put this song into the new wave genre but after watching the reaction I think this is more properly a soul song and now I love it in a whole new way.
If you think about it it really has a lot of "MoTown" vibes too it.
Span-Dow Ballet. It's so clean & clear...great choice! Yes, they are the originators of this song. Professor of Rock: Interview with Tony Hadley tells the story of "True".
This song was a staple at many weddings and proms in the late 80’s\early 90’s. 💯
Proms did not exist in the UK then.
Span-Dow
P.M. Dawn used a clip in Thier song called Set Adrift A Memory Bliss
Yes Spandau Ballet is the ORIGINATORS 🙏✌️
Yeah, PM Dawn worked directly with them and Spandau Ballet even make an appearance in the video.
This song is a perfect example of that
oh the nostalgia ... quite a popular band back in the 80's ... but somehow, it's their "Through the Barricades" song is what always sticks with me ...
Your enthusiasm for good music is intoxicating. Thank you 🙏🏽
This song always reminds me of 2 great songs from that time by Breathe - 'How Can I Fall' and 'Hands To Heaven'. ... smoooth eighties
Span dow ballet! So smooth and his voice was just amazing!!
This song really takes me back. I really miss the 80s, was such a simpler time (for me anyway, born in 1970). The golden age of MTV.
Jamel has great taste. I'm in the same age group as him, and people like us know what top music is. No showboating, just facts.
That's right, agree.
They still play this on the radio. "Gold" is another good one. It's pronounced like Span Dow Bal Lay.
Only When You Leave Got modest AirPlay but is a good song of theirs too.
Everytime I watched one of your videos I can't help but laugh and smile. You just exude kindness and light. You'd be the dude that I'd love to hang out with.
Tony Hadley really shines in "only when you leave"
"Soul got no color." Thanks Jamel. Love, Peace and Apprecation.
Yes, this is original song by Spandau Ballet. Funfact: PM Dawn had Tony Hadley as a backup when they sampled this song way back in August 1991.
You should try “More Than This” by Roxy Music, get some Bryan Ferry up in here!
Oh please do this. so much good Roxy Music, I'd throw in Same Old Scene, or even Mother of Pearl.
..and “ don’t stop the dance” by Roxy Music. Absolute classic!.
"Avalon" and their cover of "Jealous Guy".
Avalon ,from album of the same title. ( 1982)
The album went platinum in the US
One of my favourite songs
That entire album is fantastic. Every song.
That man actually sang: "this is the sound of my SOUL"
His voice is VERY similar to the guy from Tears for Fears, especially when he "digs deep"
I actually thought this was Tears for Fears for awhile, because of the similarity of the voices.
Can we get a reaction to "Breakout" by Swing Out Sister? Similar vibe, equally gorgeous..
Brian, i have been requesting some S.O.S. for months. They have some great songs .
Oh definitely, what a reminder.
@@Terri.46 Try this cover on YT ruclips.net/video/7AujnUAY_ss/видео.html SOS made some great music.
OMG! Swing Out Sister. Am I The Same Girl. I forgot about them. Thank you!!!
That would be a great reaction!!
Swing Out Sister followed by The Blow Monkeys!
You should react to ‘Stepping Out’ by Joe Jackson(not Michael’s Dad LOL)
I just SCREAMED!! That is one of my favorite songs EVER!!
I'd also like to submit "Look of Love" by ABC and "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood (Better do the clean video though! Lol)
Been listening to this great song for 30+ years. So good.
Going back to my high school days for this one
Me too!
Me, too. My first HS dance!
Now you know what to expect, check out "Through the barricades" - you won't be disapointed!
"I'll Fly for You" is one of my favorites.
Bro, this led me down a rabbit hole, I’ve heard this song a million times but never actually listened to the band, they actually have a ton of good music. Thanks for the rabbit hole 👍🏻
Oh to be able to open my mouth and have such rich tones come out. Dude's voice is butter!
Spandau Ballet kicked butt with Chant No. 1, “True” was a complete departure!
Also the “all night long” duo is the Kemp brothers-who are also actors. Gary and Martin Kemp.
You should listen to their first song, so so different, “To Cut a Long Story Short” released in 1980.
Really stands up even today the electro new romantic sound.
@@sargonsblackgrandfather2072 totally agree. It’s still my favourite song they ever did.
Original artists. One of the best slow jams evah!
This guys right here should be making stand ups and funny shows… Everything he says and the way he’s says it it’s just so funny ! 🤣 Love his reactions!
Thank you Jamall for appreciating true talent and yes, his voice still sounds the same now look how they dressed class
If you’re going down this road, check out some ABC. Look Of Love or Be Near Me would be good places to start. More real nice 80’s blue-eyed soul.
Just remembering the smooth sound of "Be Near Me" made me want to swoon! I'm going to play that, next!
Listening to them next would be as easy as . . . oh, well, enough said. Wonderful group.
I saw ABC at at music festival in Ireland a few years ago and they are still amazing!
I’d love to see them. Bucket list for sure.
