Using that aluminum extrusion as a slide is an excellent idea. My grinders have many uses as well and the idea to make a single tool rest and a few different "slides" so I can move one tool rest around between 3 grinders is going to save me a PILE of work. Nice workmanship. Thanks

I've had two pieces of that aluminum extrusion in the garage for ages, and wondered if I would ever have a use for it, then I found your videos. I have the grinder rest almost finished, made from some rusty old 12mm and 6mm mild steel plate, so it'll be functional but not pretty. :) Thanks for the inspiration.

Not quite finished, I need to make a fence, but it works OK. I can also fasten it to a pair of magnetic bases so that I can easily move it to my other grinders. Couple of pics here, hopefully - postimg.org/gallery/hcfijngm/
Hi, It is very nice and most importantly stable since it's made from steel! I like the magnetic bases as well, if your other grinder is fixed on a steel plate, then the magnets will be steady as rocks! When you finish with the fence send me a link again to see it. Jimmy, I made a fence and changed the handles. The bolts for the pivots are pinned so that they won't spin, so only one hand is needed to loosen and tighten the handles. I made a mistake with the countersunk bolts, I intended to put them underneath and grind the tops flat, but it's only cosmetic. I like the depth of the rest plate, it can hold longer tool bits as well as many other things that you may need to grind. It's perfect, I love it!! Thanks for sharing it with us. I can't wait to see the new one, I'm sure that is going to be perfect like this. All the best Jimmy

I've already have the Veritas grinding rest would just like to have a grinding jig like the one in the video so I can sharpen/grind at specific angles such as shown. please let me know you do wonderful work btw.

Very nice tool grinding jig. If I may ask what did you use for the base that the T slots was in to move the jig from one side to the other. It appears to be repurposed from something else. But worked great to be able to slide jig from side to side.

Hi Nick, I used acetal for the washers, but I'll suggest you to use brass or soft steel! Acetal is resistant to abrasion and that is good if you need to make a bushing or something that needs to withstand wear. For the grinding rest clamping levers, you will need brass or steel because both can give you proper clamping forces as it are not slippery like acetal is. Thanks again for asking! All the best Jimmy

I was looking at Baldor 6" Bench Grinders. They have approx. 14 different models! One of the descriptions says: Built for heavy duty grinding, powered by 1/3 hp Baldor PSC type motor (except 612E & 662E which are split phase) What would be better for that type of bench grinder, a (PSC) Permanent Split Capacitor or a Split Phase motor? Is one harder or take longer to start? Do you have to spin the wheels to get it going?

If you need to grind 3/8 x 3/8 HSS lathe bits, then a heavy duty grinder is toο much I think? On the other hand if the price isn't so high in comparison with a common grinder as well as the size, then choose the heavy duty. No, I don't need to spin the wheels; my grinder has an μF 8 +/- 5% at 450V capacitor that has plenty of power to spin the wheels at the moment I push the on switch. All the best Jimmy

Measure the slot of the tool rest you have and make a guide from aluminum or brass, then make the arm. The lenght of the arm is depending from your needs. Hi I suppose that you mean the angle of the threading tool; if yes, the included angle is 60 degrees (but this tool is only to use it on the lathe for threading, I don't think that can be used on the shaper). All the best Jimmy

Use a cut off wheel in a die grinder and rough cut the shape of your tool you will burn fewer fingers that way plus it much faster.

Those are white aluminum oxide stones, 46 grit for roughing and 60 grit for finishing.

Thank you Eddie! I've made both jigs you see on the video. I used scrap pieces of aluminum and brass. You can make your own easily. Measure the slot of the tool rest you have and make a guide from aluminum or brass, then make the arm. The lenght of the arm is depending from your needs. You can make something similar to mine or you can make something with fixed angles.

Can you tell me what are the degree angles of this v shape tool brother it will be verry helpful for me i have shaper and planer so i used this kind of tools alot but i fail many times i dont know the correct degree please help me

I suppose that you mean the angle of the threading tool; if yes, the included angle is 60 degrees (but this tool is only to use it on the lathe for threading, I don't think that can be used on the shaper).

If when you say shelf, you mean the aluminum profile were the tool rest is adapted, look at 3:20
