Sweet. I hadn't seen this episode of Portlandia before. Must be a deep cut.
😂😂
😂
I was a Barista about 37 years ago. I learned all this and it really brought my coffee enjoyment and consistency to a much higher level. What I have found surprising is the average person's resistance to these principles. Some say it's all garbage, with great authority, having never tried any aspect of grind size, weight, temperature, etc. Don't knock it until you've tried it!
I got one of these things as a temporary choice after I moved to another house, never went back to a machine lol. You get so much more flavour this way.
Ditto. I grew up working in coffee shops, but it was before third-wave coffee. A few years ago, I got into alternative brew methods and started spending more time with the preparation. The coffee we make at home is now light years better than what I used to serve.
It's fine if people aren't into it, but it's a shame to knock it on principle alone.
I still like to play around with different brewers. Last pourover I bought was the Kalita Wave. I have the 1 to 2 cup version. Filters are pricey, but the resulting brew is worth it, to me. Seems to get more florals. Just something different. I do a press method where you pour the water in very slowly, almost like a pourover. Then i don't "break the crust" or stir. Just letting it steep for 3-4 min. Then i scoop out the grounds and press. Less bitterness from those beans I sometimes buy that wound up being a "mistake".
Yes, it was pretty eye opening to me. I have 3 or so presses, cause I gotta have a back-up! hahaha!
Im a Barista, you know what? Best choice of my life ♥
All these stumptown videos are super over the top hipster and I think they know it and are doing it for fun. I hope. Either way, I'm insanely jealous of that wizard mural on the espresso machine.
I barely make French press coffee, but when I do I always come back to this video. So informative, relaxing and very well produced!
How you guys managed to take something so mundane as to pressing coffee into fun grooving is amazing. Thanks. Still smiling.
Decent! I use one pretty much every day and needed these tips. Also coffee girl was adorable.
the intro made me overdose with hipster
woww all this hipster talk when it comes to present coffee with a style. I think it's very cool to mix great coffee with your lifestyle. Love it :)
lmao that comment had me cracking up
but are you wearing plaid?
Heavy metal biker is NOT hipster
and then the music.....I think I threw up in my mouth
Matt Stumptown has a gift that needs to be heard by the right people. He’s got a tone that could make millions!! Take Johnny Cash for example. Call me crazy but his tone is very relatable!!
thanx. just like comedy and baking, timing is everything!!!!
Best coffee video I have ever seen
This video is the epitome of “chill”
This tutorial was so adorable & silly, if I'm ever in Oregon I'll have to stop by =]
Great video, great tunes, just made my first brew in my new french press. You guys rock thanks!
I read about your company in an article. And although I have a customer relationship with a great roaster. I may try a bag of yours here and there to add some variety.
This was a great video and we make French press a few times a week when we have more time. It truly is the best method in my opinion. And this video was spot on and informative. Nothing like French press.
This is our second K-Classic. We had our first one for many years, so when we had to replace it, we wanted nothing else but this exact ruclips.net/user/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf model. We use it for about three people everyday in the morning. The taste and quick brew is one of the reasons we like it so much. There are so many choices of brands of coffee that we would grab what was on sale and test the different brands from there. I would definitely recommend trying different brands of coffee to find the ones you like the most because there are brands that quite frankly taste horrible.
Thanks for the video, but when I started listening to the music I ended up grabbing a beer and left the coffee.
Oh maaaan🤣
alawabidingcitizen you 😂😂😂
Microbrew of course
Life goals: Ride my bike INTO my office~

i think you meant in front of a city bus wierd how you can confuse the two
nilwar htims City bus? She rode it into the coffee shop when the video begins.
Michael Misanthropic you have no clue what i am talking about leave the comments to the adults
It’s so weird that all these sarcastic ass hateful comments...like y’all had to search for this? Anyway, I just got a French press for Christmas so I appreciate this soooo much
Really liked this presentation, both coffee making and singing. Going to look this place up.
Coffee is addictive beyond its taste. I went to Florida to taste cafe Cubano, bought the french press from Kuala Lumpur, and ask our colleagues in Ethiopia to bring me beans, oftentimes. Now when I drink a cuppa, I smile and my wife thinks, the coffee must be good!
This makes me miss living in Portland.
Great instructional video:))) Thank you and the guitarist sounds pretty good:))
"Good luck, you're gonna need it out there." *bombs and artillery go off in the distance* "I JUST WANTED SOME COFFEE!!!!"
Liberal Democrats have turned that state into a shit hole. Top ten worst cities in America are all run by Democrats.
Holy production value!
Hey: unpretentious coffee maker here. Needed a quick guide to eyeball stumptown hairbender. This video did the trick! Thanks for the resource.
omg you guys are awesome! I just got a french press and can't wait to try it out! :D
xoxo
Gabby
I was just looking into the french press method of coffee making and came across your video I really enjoyed your video very much. Can anyone tell me if the French press method taste any better than the other methods?
Like any brew, if prepared properly French Press coffee tastes great. The main difference from drip or pour over is that you will usually find a little grit in the bottom of your cup.
Some of you in these comments need to calm down. Go google coffee to water ratios and stop being grumpy. Some of yall need your morning joe it seems.
She came in. In style. Liked it.
"As coarse as breadcrumbs" is pretty imprecise considering that breadcrumbs are only as coarse or fine as you make them. Why not just say medium? Some approximate ratios would have been helpful too, since not everyone will be using the same size press.
she is so stupid she thinks "bread crumbs" are a copyright trademark invention that only comes in the container labelled "bread crumbs". you will never convince her that bread crumbs are just crumbled up bread... were that the case it would be called crumbled up bread...
@@voidremoved rude dude!
Just say kosher salt
nah not medium. you want to use a really coarse grind.
Plus when she showed and picked some up the shot was so wide we still have no idea what size her breadcrumbs are.
Thanks to you, I ditched my coffee machine:)) M
Hey Matt! Nice song:)
I don't know where you guys are but I love the shop.
Michael 732 See See Coffee is in Portland Oregon
Awesome video, thanks. Just ordered French press yesterday, I’m so excited !
How do you like it? Still in use?
Nadine S. :yea I still use it, so far so good !
@@one-winged-angel2024 Still using it?
What is the temperature of the water? 2 minutes after boiling. Is that about the time you pour it?
What an awesome video on so many levels!!
The girl on the window lol
This one is even better!!!
Does that four minutes include the original one minute when the water was just halfway?
3:40 lol
hahahaha
was that supposed to be part of the video?
My first cup came out great. First time. Thank you for being amazing!
It’s such a nice, laid back video. The music is so comforting. I don’t understand why so much flak in the comments section. 😕
People can't google extra info they need. Most french presses come with a manual that specifies the size and water ratio. Also again...google - and they say millennials need everything handed to them..
Because it’s douchey hipster bullshit
Don't discard the warming water - it's like liquid gold!!!!!
Save it in a jug for later: for drinking, watering plants, washing dishes and so many other things.

awesome comment dude ;-)
HA!
Edgelord™ is not for everyone. Lol kinda like the saying, sir your skinny Jean's, invalidate your man beard.
Manlets.
Excellent tutorial. Informative and fun to watch.
The helmets on the wall.... just plain awesome. Good going on that.
Bravo to the musician artist! Yeey!
5:05 after all this you SLAM the coffee at the bottom that way, needs more finesse !
Also I believe that your coffee is grinded way too coarse if there is no resistance at all when you push it down... there should be a little in my opinion, and this difference of pressure would prevent you from pushing it down so fast.
Puxa, que vídeo legal, muito agradável, como um bom café! Nunca bebi um café de french press, mas ainda comprarei esse equipamento.
The song is nice!
I like the smell of gasoline engine exhaust with my coffee
I like this one
Sooooo relaxing
Yet another French press video that fails to specify the coffee-to-water ratio so we can adjust for different sizes.
It's ~1tbsp per cup of coffee: 0:33 - 8 cup french press; 1:10 - 56g/8tbsp coffee.
Water grams divided by 12-16 for coffee grams.
Its tipically 1 gram for every 16 mililiters of water. I don't Live in the US so do the math
Trial and error. If 2 table spoons isn't strong enough ad 4 and then 5 and 6. Not that hard.
23g coffee to 300g water
If all things are equal (grind size, amount of coffee/water, temperature of water, brew time) except instead of brewing in French press --brewing is done in a mug/pot and subsequently strained through a tea strainer---will there be any difference in resulted coffee?
+Jitender Madan you might get more sludge than you would in a french press and i'm assuming the tea strainer mesh would be as fine as the french press
I really like your video guys, most from what I have seen :)
3:42 girl is a legend
This isn’t just coffee. This is a lifestyle.
Don’t forget your pic for shredding later 🤣🤣🤣
Great voice there Matt & great coffee.
This is like watching makeup tutorials. That's nice... Oh that's how you do it... Lovely... No way am I going to do all that or spend my money on that, my old way is good enough :D
If it's such a "super important" to warm up the french press, then warm up the mug too.
It is important to brew the coffee, hotter water in french press better result will be, same is true for tea and etc.
I don't understand your logic, warming up the french press has an impact on your brewing, warming up your cup does not.
the bad comments prove how 'unsophisticated ' Americans are better for them to stick with 'instant'
josef-olivia Transit not really, considering i take great care to make quality coffee from good beans in two differing methods.
This video is just shit.
Hey Olivia - I don’t shit on your country- no need to shit on mine. Fkn Troll
I'd say lazy before unsophisticated - an American that enjoy actual coffee. This video was fine - some people do all this unnecessary shit to their coffee like different mugs for different types. Just brew, drink and shut up lol!
Wouldn't you use the scale to measure the amount of water you have to get the ratio right? Instead of just "fill it to the top where the metal meets the glass"
kevindrone they've probably done it exactly this way for so long and know that the right amount is to that point..
But this is a "how to" video...for people that haven't been doing this for so long that they know that the right amount is to that point. Also, every 8 oz. french press isn't created equally; that point could vary on any brand/model french press.
It's really better if they had extra more informations. But since it was shown 8 cups french press, and adding 50ish grams coffee, the ration would be 1:20.
Enjoyed your sweet tunes with what proved to be a lovely cup of french press coffee -- and all thanks to you! Cheers!
Thank you!
And, big thanks to Matt!! :)
Nice job and thank you that was pleasant.....I do pour all the coffee into an antique coffee service so that my second cup is the same as my first (same brewing time since nothing was left in the grounds)
thank you for the awesome video and instructions
This video is adorable.
lol i have the same french press and i also drink the whole thing... is it bad that i drink 8 cups of coffee for breakfast????
If I am using a metal french press, am I doing anything to the taste of the coffee vs glass?
+arun120977
No.
What’s the temp of the hot water ? Boiling hot water, 100c?
Nice camera work. Randomly came across this.
Very cool place
Hey great video -- two questions : what temp should the water be and how much water was that total for the 56g of beans?
+Steven McDowall according to the video the water is 205ºF and it's an 8cup french press.
Thanks Tom!
Will any sweet tunes do?
So how much water did you use?
1:50 "Fill it up halfway (with water)" except, don't french presses come in different sizes? Halfway is a relative amount. At the end, shouldn't the extra coffee be poured in a separate container otherwise it will continue brewing?
+Levi Ackerman 0:33 It clearly states she is using an 8 cup french press. Need me to do the math for you?
read the fucking directions when you buy one fuck pretty simple
Your ONE of the few I’ve seen do do French press right, CONGRATS 🎉🎈🎊🍾
So, I can listen to metal when I make French Press coffee? And here I was believing I had to be a haughty cunt to make great coffee! I guess I’ll brew to Slayer next time. Old Slayer of course, not the new shit.
Can I first pour the hot water into the jar and only then add the coffee?
yes you can but you have to stir more. when the coffee is in first the water pouring in mixes it around in the glass.
Sure, go ahead. It’s your coffee!
It was a nice video.
I think I'll just have tea.
"I want to make a video about how to use a French press.."
"Are you a pretentious douche?"
"Oh yeah, definitely!"
"Then step right this way!"
This video was so hipster I almost considered switching to instant coffee just so I wouldn't be associated with it.
🤣🤣 👏🏻👏🏻 bravo sir... made me chuckle!
Hahaha
😂
enjoy your shitty coffee m8!
Whose song is this? I love it.
Hello Malarie, Great Video,
I have very little stupid Question.
I am using the grind Coffee....... how many table spoon I need for 2 cups of Coffee?
Cool video
Love french press and use almost same method. It's just that I live where water needs to be conserved. How about putting the water used to heat the press in a bucket to cool then water plants. Just dumping it helps no one.
Or, why not use the hot water for the coffee?
Great tune :)
But do not ever press firmly at the end, what the fuck was that?
hi biker lady, this is very well explained Thanks, good sounding 'hog' nice playing too
josef-olivia Transit `
I'm never moving to Portland! Also, I don't think breadcrumbs is the best descriptor for coarseness.
I love the singer
This was so soothing to watch
Since when does a tablespoon equal 7 grams?
Skip the scale, skip the timer, skip the heated tap water, skip wasting the first round of hot water, use distilled or reverse osmosis water and get back to making coffee without all the fuss. Add your fresh ground coffee to the press container, fill it half way with water, go take a leak, break the surface as you saw in the video, top off the container with more hot water, wait a few minutes (2 or 3 or 4 doesn't really matter) for the coffee to steep, plunge the press, wait a minute or two for the sediments that came through and around the filter to settle and THEN pour your coffee. Some people like the sediments in their coffee, but personally, I don't care for it. I find it makes the coffee taste bitter. The longer the coffee steeps, the more bitter it gets. I like the temperature to also be below 180F as it seems to make a much more flavorful coffee than having it closer to boiling. If you want stronger coffee, use more coffee, not a longer steep. Anyway, this video is bogus for preparing coffee. Seriously, a digital scale and a timer? Egads, my grandmother must've been lost making coffee 80 years ago. Oh, BTW, don't ride your bike into the kitchen. The fumes are a bitch when making your coffee.
IMO, there was no "fuss" as you say. Looks pretty simple to me.
Atouk not if the temp is rite, but ya can not leave it as long butter cup
What motorcycle was she riding?
When I saw broken arms I lol'd... Reddit has actually messed me up ahaha
Thx that cool.
I kind of feel like preheating the press is an unnecessary step. I've tried it before with my usual measurements for coffee, and haven't noticed any sort of difference in taste. Or if there is a difference, my taste isn't sophisticated enough to notice
