    I've been telling myself this for a while now: no matter how slow you recite the Lord's Prayer to yourself, you cannot say it slow enough! All of our life as Christians is met in its entirety within it, as it is our the Lord Jesus taught us to pray:
    * We praise God, acknowledging Him as Father and ruler of Heaven.
    * We ask for His Kingdom to come within us and around us before it comes in its fullness on the Last Day, and that His will would be done instead of our own.
    * We ask for our "daily bread," which means everything that we will need in that day.
    * We ask for forgiveness and that we would forgive others, meaning that we ought to love God and love our neighbor.
    * We ask to be delivered from sin and the devil.
    Everything is there!

    This is very good. I tried it a bit to say the prayer or Lord’s Prayer and I thought I was going to jump out of my skin. The desire to speed up is so so strong, and in felt uneasy, but I’m going to stick with this and force myself to pray slowly and fight thethe passion of frenzy and rush and go word by word. Thanks for this.

    When I came back to Orthodoxy I struggled majorly with attentiveness, distraction and my mind drifting and what to pray
    After watching this however many months ago and learning to pray VERY SLOWLY my quality of prayer has dramatically changed. It’s not perfect but thank all heavenly goodness it has improved
    One thing that has helped with is reciting a prayer with 2-3 words, sometimes even 1 word, on every slow exhale. Focus on your breath really helps
    THANK YOU FOR SHARING SUCH A BLESSED LESSON

    Now this really is interesting: St.Theresa of Avila (yes I know Catholic, but pre the great schism so Orthodox may accept her) said exactly the same thing, that the Our Father, prayed very slowly, once a day, is itself enough to the lead the soul to the heights of holiness: if this were done everywhere the Kingdom of Heaven would arrive the more quickly

    Thank you for this video. In the Protestant tradition (Baptist) I come from, this is a completely foreign concept.
    One question: in all Spanish (my mother tongue) translations, as well as in several English ones (ESV among them), Luke 17:21 states "…the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.” This is different from saying "…the kingdom of God is within you.” Am I missing something here? Is "within you" a/the correct rendering? Thanks a lot in advance.

    • @otelders
      @otelders  2 года назад +4

      Original Greek New Testament: "ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐντὸς ὑμῶν ἐστιν", which means "is within you". Some newer translations use "in your midst", as you said.
      Still, we have older interpretations: “The kingdom of God within you” means that the joy, which the Holy Spirit cultivates in your hearts, is an icon and pledge of the eternal joy, which the souls of the saints, enjoy.

    This is probably too advanced for the typical internet crowd and we can easily fall into spiritual delusions from such methods. Definitely slow down our prayers, but this slow can lead to pride and delusion for us in the world. Please read what the saints say about spiritual delusion. There are too many of us worldly ascetics who want to practice all the wonderful methods of the monastic fathers without giving up the world and the hard sacrifice of obedience in a monastery. Frankly all of us “Orthodox” on the internet are vain spiritual infants and are not in any condition to be following prayer methods of the phylokalia or what Fr Stephanos is saying with our minimal supervision. Once we are at that level, we will not be on the internet anyways.
