- Don't make this common leader mistake that loses fish!
I unfortunately lost a possible trophy fish because of it.
Worst of all - it is 100% avoidable.
Here's how to prevent this fishing line leader fail!!

Great advice! I will keep this in mind this spring.
Glad to see that you enjoyed this video!
Thank you for the advice 🤙🏼
Glad to see that you enjoyed this lesson!
Great tip, Luke! You da man
Sorry about your loss, but it’s nice to see that this even happens to Luke. Yes, he is human.
PLEASE EXPLAIN: The "bite tipit", is a size up from your usual mono line that is attached to your braid? I,E: 15Lb Braid attached to a 20Lb monoline, THEN you add another 6"s of 30Lb mono to the 20Lb mono? Or am I COMPLETLY missing what the, 'bite tipit', is? Thanks in advance 👍
heartbreaking.
Absolutely!
Good share / great reminder ! A bit unlucky with the outcome - trophy fish seem like always requires that extra attention to detail (weedless rig ?😅). That jig head tie point looks like very thin wire to make more stress on leader with a loop knot and cause it to break.….a split ring for action and uni knot would have held up for that particular event
Thanks for sharing the helpful tip!
I’m thinking about becoming a member but not sure if this information will help me, I’m in the Ponce Inlet, Daytona Beach, Tomoka River area and we don’t really have sea grass and our water isn’t very clear like in Crystal River, Tampa, on down the west coast. I’ll more then likely gonna sign up anyways but I was wondering if anyone had any opinions about the area
Great tips
Glad it was helpful!
I've had this same break and the mono was discolored at the break. Looked like rust so maybe the jig eye rusts a little and the rust wears the mono faster than a clean jig eye.
It makes sense that rust in the eyelet would cause abrasion on the line.
Is there anyway to double up the loop so there are 2 points of contact on the jig head? Kind of a safety net??
I was thinking the same thing. 👍🏼
@@chaspruitt2610 might go out to the garage and give it a try… going out Friday morning so I’ll see if it holds up
Let us know if you find anything that works.
You mentioned using the bite timing murky water. Would you use the bite tip in clear water?
I now use it for all water clarities... if clear, I just go thinner on all lines except for the final bite tippet.
I wonder if the jig eye is too thin . Great video heartbreaking just watching though.
A thicker wire would likely be helpful, but a properly set drag and line that's not compromised would ensure that a break doesn't happen (I just failed on checking for compromised line).
@@Saltstrong yeah I hear ya.
Tough losing that one. I don't know if there is a reflection on the video on the ball head but I see a protruding piece of metal from that ball line attachment that may have caused the line to fail.
I'll be sure to check that out. Thanks!
Hopefully it enters service without any additional armor.
If you had fluoro on, you wouldn't have even got that much of a fight. Loop knots can be a pain in the ass cause when you get excited. You check everything but that. Been there. You were going after much bigger fish so those loop knots I would re-tie after a catch...probably lol
Yes, I'll definitely be retying after every big catch going forward.
Is a snap not a good idea to help this from happening?
The same can happen with snaps. I like loop knots because they are less visible to fish and they come in handy when getting snagged on the bottom given that they are slightly weaker... so if I have to break off, I at least get back all of my leader line so I can be back to fishing very quickly.
Thank you very much!
@@Saltstrong Thank you very mutch... have a nice day.... see you…. Greetings Jörg
It's always the big ones that got away😂
So true
Bite tippet? Just tie the 40lb.
The thicker the leader line, the more likely the bigger/smarter fish can see/feel it. My overslot snook/redfish catch rate has gone up after using bite tippets.
1st 😂
Thanks!
