How refreshing it is to see where the cameras show the musicians performing, and not on a sweaty conductor jabbing a tiny stick into the air. Bravo!!

No offence to conductors, but, what ecxactly you are there for? This is amazing.

Well, I have to take a slightly different stand, I’m afraid. I’m not a youngster, I’m a long-retired musician of almost 80 - that might be relevant, to some people. As far as the sound of this performance, yes, it’s one-of-a-kind, incredible, fantastic, and all the “Wow”s you can fit in, and I agree with every one. It is amazing and frightening, I have to hide in the undergrowth and not move a muscle in case I’m discovered!
I do rather take issue with the “no conductor” ploy - firstly, watch the “lead violinist” - he’s not called “concertmaster” and the “orchestra leader” lightly. And HE is the conductor. Everybody who’s able to see him should be watching. I say “should be” deliberately: I was a conductor for many, many years and the majority of the players will look at you for the first note and the last note. After all the rehearsals, you could probably sit down on the podium and have a beer!
But the other point I want to make is - why did they do it like this, apart from visual shock? Sure, the ritual of the Rite of Spring is incredibly powerful, highly erotic, brutal and barbaric, but I don’t know that it warrants TEN timpani ! Was an orchestra of this utterly overpowering size really required for Stravinsky’s concept? And THAT’s my point here. The orchestra - or more accurately, the sponsor and marketing manager - is not serving the music. They are making the music serve them. That is something about which I feel uncomfortable, and I feel Stravinsky wouldn’t be too happy either.

How?! Just...how...? I'm trying to imagine how I'd attempt it and the only thing that comes to mind is rehearsing it _ad infinitium_ using a recording as a reference, and then recording those rehearsals to adjust the dynamics. They're so...together. For a small ensemble, that's nothing special, but - damn! - a full orchestra?
