  • The young World Champion to-be Bobby Fischer doesn't fare well against the surprising Latvian Gambit 😮
Living chess legend in the Pacific Northwest Viktors Pupols has the ultimate bragging rights...he defeated Bobby Fischer!
This topsy turvy game from the US Junior Championship is full of missed opportunities and common mistakes that we all make. One player becomes a strong Master...one player becomes the great of all time!
Viktors was raised in Latvia and favors the Opening of the same name, he is a part of the rich culture from that country including Grandmasters Tal, Shirov and Shabalov.

@@ChessCenterOfficial Wow, thanks Chris! Such an insightful interview.
His outlook is inspirational & is a true Chess maverick - His fights with the arbiter and his wife's Knitting needles provide the more comical moments LOL

You're welcome! He had me on the ropes in the 2015 US Open and I snuck away with a draw, he was roughly 80 years old! Then a friend from Seattle told me the story of "Uncle Vik", a true legend in the Pacific Northwest.

@@ChessCenterOfficial Just looking at your game with Uncle Vik! Good battle GG!
He spoke about still playing for the creativity & exploration of Chess, which are the reasons I play for. Adult learners like me need a different kind of role model, so thanks again for the info♟
