This is just my own interpretation, but I think what it's saying is that when it comes down to "us or them," like when there really isn't any muddle ground, we need to make the conscious decision to put "them," the people opposing us, ahead of ourselves. We're trading our spot of winning an argument for their respect and trust.

In light of the recent Supreme Court ruling and the emotionally-charged arguments from both sides of the issue, I think this song's message is needed.

Biblical truth is still very significant. We CAN'T just love people and leave truth behind. We ALSO can't afford not to love people.
