Nonsense. If you're familiar with Pistonheads. The owner of a McLaren F1 (Flemke) has cycled most of the TdF on the sportive. Francois Perrado (Le Mans winner and car nut) has a massive collection of cars including a 250GTO. Harry Metcalf (Evo mag) likes an old bike.
TRUE petrolheads love cycling. the boy racer crowd dont.

james maY UNDERstands bicycles. I have noted before- there is no other mode of transport on the planet as effecient as a bicycle. Nothing. Its 5 times faster than walking, with no fuel apart from your body's energy. It can average 15 to 20 mph or even quicker, which is faster than most cars average pace in cities. It doesnt cost much to produce, doesnt need much to repair. Just needs more investment. Cars arent better than bicycles, no matter what people claim. Show me a car that can do the same average speed as a bicycle without needing fuel.

    • @petesmitt
      @petesmitt 2 года назад +3

There are downsides compared to walking; bicycles cost a lot more money than shoes; walking is weight bearing exercise, which is much more better for your body than cycling, which isn't weight bearing; they are prone to being crashed and can cause significant injuries just falling off one and if you are then run over by a motor vehicle, then lights out..

@Ugg Calisthenics coach PhD Bio 🧪 Very true, but you don't need one to cycle, in the same way you don't need a Ferrari to drive a car. I'll be honest, i've never spent more than £400 on a bike and that was extravagant cost for me.

I basically like everything that features James 🙂Besides that I really could relate to the ~5:00 story about regularly riding your bike.. Being only 2 years younger than James May, I only started cycling again around 2018 after a pause of ~20 years. I also noticed the effect on my physical health and couldn't be happier.

Relate to James's saying that riding around London is rewarding. Used to finish my commute from Waterloo to the City and back on my trusty racer. How I loved the freedom of getting from point a to b so swiftly. 7:10 Waterloo, 7:25 bun shop and 7:30 in the office in Wood St. And gave one options if trains were cancelled or delayed.

I enjoy tinkering and repair mechanical things. I used to spend countless weekends mending cars. But i'd have a shed full of tools and parts. When i moved much had to go. I got back into cycling after 20 years of not riding and it has become my passion. Bikes satisfy that tinkering urge and take up far less space and is more accessible, cheaper and safer to work on. There is nothing that cannot be mended with the home tinkerer other than maybe broken frames. Great fun...

I never knew he was such a cyclist! I kinda love how he doesn’t have any lycra yet but has ~21 bikes and rides almost every day. Living in London i’m sure he can get from to/from more quickly, def more efficiently and with alot more fun than any of his cars can. I was pretty hyped for this interview and was not disappointed. If you wind the bottom limit screw in more on the 105 front derailleur so the chain only just misses when you're on the largest sprocket on the cassette, the initial force required on the lever will be less.

So cool. I knew that James May was a little bit of an enthusiast, but I had no idea he was that into bikes. One weird flaw in those old 70s era 600 and Dura Ace derailleurs was that they had really poor chain wrap. Usually chains would start skipping off the freewheel teeth once they got the first bit of wear, say 3000 miles or so.

It would be awesome if James May were to do a RUclips show called Bicycle Mayday where he finds derelict bicycles and restores them back to standard. Some episodes could be him making his interpretation of what he considered to be the best bike of that era. I'd love to watch him nerd out on vintage parts and talk about the history behind the brand and famous riders.
I think it would be very interesting for him (and us) to visit bicycle and component manufacturers, check out new and old tech, get Hammond to pop up from time to time since he also enjoys cycling. How cool would that be?

Oh, finally I see a dawes bike somewhere.. Had one (other model) with 3 speed SRAM gear hub for around 20 years. Best bike I've ever had, not a race bike, but just to get around it was awesome. Must have done well over 200 000km on it commuting every day. Eventually got rid of it as the forks were starting to get corrosion and just started to look "iffy" after so many tire swaps. Dunno what it was, but I've done 150km rides with even though it was only a 3 speed gear hub in there and it was quite comfortable the whole ride.

He should review his stance on the Moulton. Replace that heavy rear hub with a single speed (London is mostly flat, isn't it?) and it is brilliant for rough streets. Split the bike and it fits in a small trunk (boot), or in a large suitcase that flies without extra fees. It is absolutely stable screaming down steep hills fully loaded. Some wide-ish Schwalbe tires and it's brilliant.

I know it's not exactly comparable, but a South American Condor soaring on the breeze over the Andes IS somewhat more efficient at moving forward with little effort. In those conditions, the bird can stay aloft all day and hardly move a feather... about 500x more efficient than a bloke on a bike. Of course, over a distance, a human in a sailplane also gives the cyclist a pretty good run for the not-much energy expended.

I was riding bikes for many years. I then developed a condition that effected my muscles, which made it difficult, especially as I moved to a river valley, where to get anywhere made me knackered by the time I left the valley. So, I rode only in the valley. (Boring!) I then got a good deal on an ebike. This meant I could leave the valley. Contrary to people saying I am lazy, I went from a max range of 33 miles on the battery, I can now do 74 miles. So, ebikes can improve your fitness.

All I know from drive tribe is that an orbea is better then a Dacia sandero. Also SIDI is from Italy.

The best front light is a throbbing one, that gently moves from high to low and back again over a second or two.

Sidi shoes are great. I would like another pair, all the way from Italy! Size 45, if you're wondering.

Hmm. All the Sidi motorcycle shoes we had in our shop were made in Romania if I recall correctly.

His discussion at around 36:00 is interesting. He recognizes how nice London was without cars, but then says "we really do need vans because people are ordering everything off Amazon"... It tells me zoning is all wrong, and we are sacrificing a more important convenience (safe exercise and travel for average people) for a trivial one (fast delivery of stuff we can probably live without).

Sidi is from Italy. I still am using flat pedals for my road bike and I know I am missing a lot from not using clipless. I have a pair of used SPD pedals and just recently bought Shimano blue cleats. I am planning on getting shoes and try using clipless pedals.

I did this the first 2 months owning a road bike. Be patient when switching over but clipless will change your ride.

@@BTcycle What changed my ride was dumping clipless. Flat pedals are far better, my rides are identical in times and effort but I don't have to constantly clip in and out in traffic and I can go anywhere and do anything because my flat shoes are basically normal shoes. Don't need to feel like an idiot walking around. There is just zero benefit to clips.

I've put my finger onto the tire on a downtube shifter. Reaching down without looking. I switched to sticking my thumb out so it would hit the downtube first. Then, in 1979, I got a bike with SunTour barcons, which are still on my daily commuter bike, which is the third bike they have been on. They have at least 120,000 miles on them.

Cycling is the best form of transport full stop! Like James May you can still be a Petrol Head and appreciate the brilliance of the bicycle! I would love to be spinning my cranks with a pair of those beautiful Italian Sidi Shot 2 road cycle shoes! Good luck everyone! Thanks Mark!
