"Never Gonna Give You Up" is not in fact a one-hit wonder, since "Together Forever" was also a hit of his. But if you're going to associate a one-hit-wonder with a character who has Lay On Hands, you've gotta go with "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls.

In the forgotten realms there is a human god called Kelemvor who watches over the passing from life to death. Lawful neutral, symbol is a skeletal hand holding balancing scales and his favored weapon (when that mattered) is a 2h sword. Works perfectly for this character.

My headcanon is that this character was raised as a templar [paladin], it turned out that they are a reincarnated saint of their order [divine sorcerer], started seeing visions sent by their deity [cleric]; the visions got worse and someone - or something - started talking to them [warlock], they decided to lay low out of fear of being branded a heretic (thus forced to fight back against their fellow templars) and joined a circus where they picked up many trades [bard] which they're now utilising to infiltrate the cult of their "patron". They might discover that the soul of the saint they happen to reincarnate as was something this patron and their deity had been fighting over for centuries and the saint wasn't even the first time this soul was born into the realms where mortals reside.

This reminds me a lot of Hanatarou from the Bleach anime, he was a "weak" healer soul reaper, but his blade accumulated all damage he healed from people, and then created a single burst attack equal to all damage he healed from his allies. And then it became a useles scalp for the rest of the day after bursting the damage. XD

One nice thing about this build is that if you are fighting a spellcaster, the single massive hit is going to make them maintaining concentration on a spell very difficult. 99 damage means the caster has to make a DC 49 Constitution save to hold their spell. Nigh impossible without special magic items or legendary resistance. XD

While running away, one of my players (who was a Genie Warlock) hid in his vessel. The vessel was promptly picked up by Lady Wachter who was watching the whole thing go down. It was fantastic.

Love the idea of this character being an older soldier, maybe a warrior who's all but mastered close combat but now wants to explore his divine heritage and see if there's another path he can take, slinging spells and blessing allies rather than rushing in for the kill, but beware when he's forced to draw that old sword from it's sheath, you'll see what strength still holds in these old bones .

One thing that I think would be very cool to see is a “theoretical maximum damage” at lvl 17 where you assume things such as max dice rolls, critical hit, etc. and see what comes out the other end.

Genie's Vessel Shenanigans: Vessel was a ring, my Warforged Paladin Warlock, Sentry, was air dropped by the Aarakocra into the camp of target bad guys. Happened to land inside of a tent where he proceeded to burn it and everything around him down, a clear indication for the rest of the party to attack. This all went down with ACDC's "Thunderstuck" playing. It will likely be one of my favourite memories in D&D.

Adult red and cultists. I took my ring off placed it in the knot of a nearby tree pulled my dead and unconscious party members inside it.
The reinforcements were all humanoid and never found my ring. Popped my limited wish for revivify on the cleric who just rolled an 8 on their last death save fail. They raised dead and revivified everyone else.

  • @MadnessOpus

May I give you a hand in explaining this one roleplaywise?
    1. Paladin represents devotion to your chosen endeavors.
    2. Sorcerer represents inner divine strength manifested through your devotion.
    3. Cleric represents the bond with a deity that fits your beliefs the most.
    4. Bard represents the discovery of a hymnal chuckful of psalms to said deity. Still in tandem with the divine theme.
    5. Warlock (the hardest out of all of these) represents you bounding a genie to your will… at least partially. Djinni are the kindest of all of them, so I'd personally go with this one in particular. (Anyone can make a Warlock pact at any time to be honest, mind you.) This way you can omit the potential of commiting idolatry against your deity.
    There you go. :)

I've always liked the thematics of a cleric/paladin, but I think you highlight the unfortunate challenges. The nightmare I would have with this character is setting up my big attack:
"I use my action for Path of the Grave!" DM: ok
"I use my bonus action to quicken cast booming blade!" DM: they cast counterspell

    • @DnDDeepDive

Liked this build, it made me think a bit more about a build I’m trying to figure out, specifically a build based around the Lightning Arrow spell. Effectively like a different kind of one hit wonder. The main allure of the spell is that it scales better than most blast like spells. On top of the fact that it takes into account Sharpshooter and any other modifiers to damage. Would be interested to see how you would do it. Yes that means this wall of text is also kind of a suggestion.

Refreshed the page to see if this one was up yet, and as it was loading I went "I bet it's called the One Hit Wonder." I see it and just call out, "I knew it!"
We have a Genie Warlock in our Sunday night party. We haven't pulled many huge shenanigans with the Genie Vessel yet like smuggling someone in somewhere. But this is how we've taken advantage of it lately. We are currently level 13, and she can pull others into the vessel and stay there for a number of hours equal to double proficiency bonus. Our DM can be fairly hardcore and will throw several pretty strong encounters against us when we're like exploring a dungeon or otherwise somewhere that we aren't supposed to be, so we'll start to feel the attrition. We've loved (aside from the quick short rests) just hiding the vessel in a corner or a pile of other things and hopping in there and taking a long rest in the middle of a hostile fortress or wherever we happen to be since we can potentially stay in there up to 10 hours at this point. Literally hidden in an archdevil's fortress and taken a full night's sleep and there was no trace of us because we were in her (she's a pirate captain) little Jack Sparrow Compass of a Genie Vessel.

I was playing as a kind of vigilante hero with a secret identity. His "civilian" identity was a wealthy eligible bachelor who helped the party with social stuff. When it was time to crack heads, he handed a member of the party his ring and "teleported away" - or so his friends thought. As you've no doubt guessed, he actually went into the ring to change into his alter ego, and when the party got to the fight he would make his entrance as the Hanging Lantern!
The players were all in on the gag, but they were great sports about it, the idea being that the ring "summoned" this dark spirit of vengeance and justice.

They're still on the bard chassis, which is STRONG and add in a bit of burst when you feel like it. It pairs so well with Paladin 2, or Bladelock 5. I like the fact that I just scales up on its own with bard levels too, but doesn't require extra resources. You can also pair this with a non-finesse weapon unlike a rogue. Psychic Bladed Great Axe with Undead level 6 for an extra d12 of necrotic damage really starts consistently piling on the damage.

You can also go straight Grave Cleric with a few levels in sorcerer and the metamagic adept feat.
Casting hold person/monster on the enemy at the first round (using heightened spell and/or Silvery Barbs to ensure failure).
Then on your next turn use Path to the Grave and a Quickened Spell Inflict Wounds. The best part of this combo is that it scales by 2d10*2 damage for every spell slot level you gain.
At Level 5 you can net an average of 110 Necrotic damage at the expense of at least 2 spell slots and a channel divinity charge.

As a lvl 3 Genie Warlock, my party and I were doing some classic "explore the sewers" quest where we ran into a few trolls. A few trolls for a lvl 3 party? Yes, somewhat unbalanced, but at the start we were doing well. As an Efreet Warlock I had fire damage on my attacks and we had a wizard with Chill Touch and we were focus firing then to great effect! Until for some reason everyone decided to change tactics midway and split up. I was chased by a Troll into a room and had just one turn to shove my vessel (a spice jar) onto a bar shelf and pop inside to hide, praying that the troll would fail their investigation rolls. Eventually, by the time the troll found me, my party had regrouped and I was able to pop out, Disengage and run back to the group. Lots of fun and some tense rolls!

    Another incredible build!
Somethings that i'm not sure you considered, but i think could be a way to bump the damage:
    - Taking warlock 5 instead of Bard 5
    - Taking pact of the blade instead of chain,
This way you could get improved pact weapon for a +1 to attack and damage and Eldritch Smite for extra 4d8 damage on your big attack.
I haven't done the math, but it seems to me that this could be better for your nova round even losing the advantage from the familiar. Ietherway this would defietily hurt the suppport capabilities of the chracter.
    Thank you for another episode!

Once you hit 4th level slots, it might be better to try and fit up to warlock 5, since you can spike both Eldrich smite and Divine smite on the same hit

Here's an alternate take of this build that I feel would net a fair bit more damage than what you were able to get out by being a slave to the spreadsheet. Only go 4 levels into Sorcerer and Bard to open up room for two more Warlock levels. Get Pact of the Blade instead of Chain (Maybe even get Magic Initiate if you have room so you can grab Find Familiar there even if it's not as good), and grab Eldritch Smite at 5th. AKA, forgoing a d6 for an extra 4d8. I think that's probably a much more optimal option if you don't want 3rd level Bard or Sorcerer spells.

My favorite use for the Genie Vessel that I've come up with (though I haven't used it) is the Paladin Bomb (AKA "I'm on a horse"). Put your paladin friend in the vessel, let them summon their steed and do whatever other preparation they need to and then toss it into the fray of your enemies and either attack it or break it in some other way. The paladin pops out already mounted in the midst of your enemies. The shock value alone would be priceless.
For a more effective option, just do the same thing but with someone who knows Thunder Step or some other great self-AOE spell.

This is the build I came up with a while ago (modified since I made it pre Tasha's) for a similar premise (though I didn't restrict myself to 1 attack per round):
27 Custom Lineage Conquest Paladin 6/Hexblade Warlock 5/Grave Cleric 6/Battle Master Fighter 3
    18 Str 15 +2/+7
    18 Dex 8 -1/+4
    13 Con 13 ->14 +2/+13
    13 Int 8 -1/+4
    9 Wis 12 ->13 +1/+12
    0 Char 15->17 ->18->20 +5/+16
Feats: Res (Con), +1 Char + 1 Wis, +2 Char, Great Weapon Master
Once per short rest, you can deal:
    2d6 Slashing (Greatsword) (Avg. 7)
1d8 Slashing (Battle Master Maneuver) (Avg. 4.5)
    5 Slashing (Char mod)
    10 Slashing (Great Weapon Master)
    1 Slashing (Improved Pact Weapon)
    6 Slashing (Hexblade's Curse)
4d8 Radiant (3rd Level Divine Smite) (Avg. 18)
4d8 Force (3rd Level Eldritch Smite) (Avg. 18)
Avg. Total (Normal): 69.5 Avg. Total (Crit): 117
    With Path to the Grave:
Avg. Total (Normal): 139 Avg. Total (Crit): 234
Your to hit bonus is +7 with GWM (+5 from Char, +6 from proficiency, +1 from Improved Pact Weapon, -5 from GWM).
Tactics are Path to Grave, and then action surge, getting 2 chances to hit. With the +10 we can grant ourselves with Conquest Paladin's Channel Divinity, we hit an AC of 19 on a roll of a 2. We can also trade 9 damage (on average) from the maneuver to add +1d8 to hit (with precision strike), making our min roll 20 to hit.
If we want to use our larger resources:
    2d6 Slashing (Greatsword) (Avg. 7)
1d8 Slashing (Battle Master Maneuver) (Avg. 4.5)
    5 Slashing (Char mod)
    10 Slashing (Great Weapon Master)
    1 Slashing (Improved Pact Weapon)
    6 Slashing (Hexblade's Curse)
5d6 Radiant (5th Level Branding Smite) (Avg. 17.5)
5d8 Radiant (4th Level Divine Smite) (Avg. 22.5)
4d8 Force (3rd Level Eldritch Smite) (Avg. 18)
Avg. Total (Normal): 91.5 Avg. Total (Crit): 161
    With Path to the Grave:
Avg. Total (Normal): 183 Avg. Total (Crit): 322
For magic items, a Flame Tongue, Frost Brand, or and +x Greatsword would do wonders.
You could also go Paladin 5/Warlock 7/Cleric 6/Fighter 2. You'd lose 5th level spells slots, but you'd have 2 4th level spell slots from Warlock. We'd also lose Aura of Protection, which is a nice support ability.
Another option is to take Lucky in place of either Res (Con) (we'd lose 1 HP per level & eventually lose 6 from our Con Save) or the +2 Char (we'd lose +1 to hit & 2 damage).

You could go Paladin 2, Grave 2 and Shadow Sorcerer X. Starting with either Paladin or Sorcerer. Sick the hound, cast Hold/Monster Person to get Auto crit. Next turn Path to the Grave for vulnerability and quicken Booming Blade with Smite. This dosent work on Legendary monsters, but thematically "Send his soul to damnation" or "Your time has come", however you want to flavor it.
Supporting your group and controlling the battlefield. When you face a foe worthy enough for you to swing your sword, you smite them down with a single blow.

I'm a Genielock player. We kind of kicked the hornets nest of bad guys when we were trying to assassinate a corrupt lord that was responsible for the prices on our heads. We got caught seeing him performing a dark ritual with a bunch of cultists and had set about trying to get evidence on him. So we knew the ritual would be happening that week but we decided the Cobra Kai approach was best. Well we didn't the cult had so many members as we were starting to have problems with all of them. So our arcane trickster and druid were the only ones with the stealth scores to avoid anyone. So I suggested we pick a room and hide the group in the lamp somewhere safe. The top of a large wardrobe worked. The druid also broke a few windows and wildshaped out of there to make it look like we had escaped into the forest. We spent our time there going over where we were and where we needed to go in order to avoid them. The lamp wasn't found and when we were rested, we managed to get better stealth checks into the hidden chamber in his bedroom.

I always wanted to build an "Investment of the Chainmaster" Chainlock under a DM that would let me have a Gazer familiar. Taking all of those neat eye rays and boosting their DCs to my caster DC sounds awesome. A strict RAW reading of the eye rays doesn't say that they are attacks, meaning it's arguable that you wouldn't even need to use your bonus action to command the familiar to use them. Even if it did take your bonus action, it's still two beams which is pretty decent... Ahhh, if only.

This one shot build is crazy!

I was SHOCKED that there was no hexblade in this. My initial thought was go hexblade, max out Cha to hit and damage, but you were able to do that with Strength in the end and the genie bump was nice to have. Despite the concept of being a "one-hit wonder", taking the haste spell would allow you to do two strikes. Yes, you wouldn't have bless, but there's at least a 50% chance that someone else in the party is going to have that. Of course, someone could cast haste on you, or you might have boots of speed.
As for my own choice of a one-hit wonder song (I love me some Rick Ashley though), I'd have to go with either Go The Distance by Michael Bolton or Please Don't Go by K.W.S. Honourable mentions have to go to Save Tonight by Eagle-Eye Cherry and The Bitter End by Placebo.

Best we've used the genie home was around level 10 or so. Was shortly after the party can join inside the object. We needed to infiltrate a military base of orcs and ogres. The idea we came up with was to all climb into the ring. Then the druid took the ring and shape changed into a tiny spider. Hid and climbed along ceilings and such to get to where the boss was located. Waited until he was in a vulnerable situation and then the druid jumped off the wall and that was the code for time to come out. We all came down prepared for battle while the Half-orc half-ogre military commander was resting.
