How would you define a "close friend"? I'm interested to know. Is there a point at which you can definitely say that somebody has become an especially close friend? (I'd love to start posing open-ended questions like this in the comments section of my videos because it could make for an interesting discussion!)
I would define a close friend as someone you’ve spend so much time with , that you understand each other without words at some point. There are few to no misunderstandings, because you’ve known each other so well. You don’t have to fill up each moment with talking, but can enjoy each other’s company in complete silence without it becoming uncomfortable.
I would say a close friend to me is not necessarily someone who you have known for a long time but someone that you know who you could tell anything without fear of them repeating it and the same from them to you
I consider a close friend one who you can be yourself with and be relaxed in their company. I have many people I call ' friends' but I always feel as though I am decieving myself when I am around them as no-one is particularly interested in the things that interest me ( painting, classical music, past times, nature etc) as they are your typical modern teenagers interested in clothing brands, boys, Snapchat etc. I am yet to find a group of friends or even one who enjoys the same things as me, which is something I really do long for. However, seeing all of the lovely commenters on this channel shows me that there are others similar to me out there:)
Just curious, how old are you? I'm a teenager as well and I absolutely love classical music, history, art, reading and spending time with friends aswell x
As a graduating college senior, I feel like I should also add to the conversation and say that it’s also okay if you never find those “forever” friends! I’ve met so many lovely people in my major/degree, but I wouldn’t say in my 3 years at university that I’ve made even one close friend-and that’s just fine! If this is also you, please know there is nothing wrong with you and that there is nothing wrong with not having “close” friends or a friend group in your early 20s like the media portrays it to be.

This is so good to hear! I'm graduating from high school in the next few weeks and I've been stressing about friends lately. I have a very close best friend who has been my bsf since we were 4, but I am pretty sure that I will loose contact with everyone else from school this summer, because I have already stopped talking to most of them during quarantine and online school. And my best friend is taking a gap year, so i'm a bit scared of feeling lonely. I just havent met many people that I relate to and genuinely like, so it's good to know that many people in their 20s don't have those close knit cliques anymore!
And this is why I have my journal. My journal that I call Bernardo has been my best friend for 28 years. Bernardo is the perfect friend. We do everything together.
As someone struggling with social anxiety disorder, I badly need somebody that I can feel safe around and feel understood and be myself when I'm with them!
I really relate to this because I get panic attacks and need to be around people who I know won't judge etc. That was difficult in university because a lot of people want to be out partying - which was my idea of hell! I felt so incredibly lonely from age 18-21. But I will say its gotten far far easier as I've gotten older and especially as the rhetoric around MH is improving. Hang in there. You'll find your tribe.
I have few friends, I was ashamed when others asked about me how many friends I have got .But then I understood I love company of few friends instead of huge friend groups. I have few friends but our connection is deep and meaningful. As Ruby says enjoying the company of like minded people is so important and you never feel uncomfortable with such people .
The whole thing about friends, I really felt that. I never felt like I belonged to a group of friends, I had a friends from all over but I constantly felt "Out of place" and not fully accepted
me too! i felt as if i was some odd creature as i preferred different things and stuff that i loved were seen as weird to them but it’s okay’ it’s alright to have friends with diverse differences but i agree having friends that understand you is extremely better! (;
I think it's a different story at uni when you're introverts like us, who may be super shy and have social anxiety on top of that- it takes longer to find close friends. 💜 It's okay though, because the waiting is so , so worth it when we DO find that really special kindred spirit! Your experience is just as valid, and you're still a great friend, regardless of your close friend circle number 💜
The message at the end was so comforting! I haven’t found many people at uni who I feel very close with yet and I felt so stressed out about it. But I know I’ll find some like-minded people soon
I only found 1 close friend at university and was a bit disappointed by that at the start. I tought that I would be in an environment with book lovers, wannabe writers, language nerds... But she's the best. Although I studied literature and languages, many people had other interests. Also, I still have some best friends from high school and we've seen each other much more outside for walks and picnics since covid. At work I found many like-minded collegaes who became friends. Strangely enough, it's easier to find friends who are diffrent from me.

This was a really lovely video. I start university in September and I’m extremely worried about finding like minded people. I’m naturally introverted but it doesn’t mean I enjoy being lonely by any means. My interests aren’t super mainstream. Going out drinking doesn’t exactly sound like a good time to me but I know university has a big drinking culture. It’s nice, though, to see you with Blakeney and have the idea reinforced that I shouldn’t give up if I don’t find my people immediately :)
Your friend group is so wholesome!! I didn't have any friends during my first year but once I found my close friends we clicked instantly!! It's so important to just wait it out and find those like-minded people rather than trying to fit into a group that doesn't really reflect yourself!!

But with Covid it's been so much harder to meet people and make friends, especially finding like minded people as societies haven't been doing much. honestly i feel like there is a LOT of pressure around university social life. i finished my degree this year and honestly i wouldnt say i made a single friend there that i would call a life long friend and thats okay! sometimes your best friends are from other stages of your life and thats fine

Uni is the best time to make deep friends, but as others have observed, don’t at feel bad if the people you really care about at this stage aren’t in your life in five years time after you all graduate. As the best works of literature tell us, life is dynamic and full of change, and losing people (through no fault of anyone) is natural. Just don’t lose your capacity to be open-hearted at any stage of your life.
Thank you for this ruby. I have always felt like a bit of an outsider. Don’t get me wrong I have a fair few friends, but I don’t have any close friends who have the same interests as me. And especially over the last year I have come to realise I can go weeks without anyone messaging me, as before lockdown it was not as noticeable as you would see people every day. But this video has really helped me, because at the end of the day we have our whole life, and I don’t mind waiting for a friend to come along who I am super close with, who enjoys reading, being outside and just spending time with me. It can be frustrating at times, but I am also happy with my own company. And that’s all that matters! To anyone out there feeling the same - There is nothing wrong with being “behind” everyone else (even thought at the end of the day there is no “behind” because time is a social construct!!). Everyone is different and sometimes it just takes a while for things to happen, you got this! 💕

I had the same issue in year 8, year 8 can be such a hard year socially. My advice is stay true to yourself, it’s easier said than done but If there is something I regret about being in year 8/9 it’s that I changed myself to try and fit in and it just wasn’t worth it. Until I found amazing friends who love and accept me, which is so so nice to have. I hope things get better. I left secondary school last week, and honestly on the last day I realised how much I didn’t care about these people’s opinions anymore which I had tried to fit in with.

Im graduating University in July, and for me Uni has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. I was the "weird" kid in school who was into very "geeky" and "nerdy" things that not a lot of others weren't into. Since going to University I've met the most non-judgemental and like-minded people. I couldn't be more thankful for my group of friends!

I actually got quite lucky that when I moved into shared accommodation they grouped me with a few people doing similar courses than me and we all just really got on. I met my best friend on the second night by chance because we sat next to her at a comedy show and she invited me and my flatmate for a drink after. I met a really good friend and my ex who is still one of my best friends in my lectures. I also joined some societies and they were great fun. Dont get me wrong Ive made and lost friends in my time at Uni but your true friends will always stick around. I hope this helps and good luck with Uni this year!! In 2016, when I was in grade 10, we did a 5-day tour to the UK.We rented houses in Canterbury, did a tour to London and visited Dover Castle and of course Canterbury Cathedral. I just loved everything, the atmosphere, the landscape, the people and even the weather. The video just made me a bit homesick, even though it was never my home, but it was so beautiful and I hope to travel to the UK for longer soon. Greetings from Germany!

I find it impossible to make friends at uni. I’m a second year (also at Exeter) but haven’t made any friends really. I have social anxiety so I don’t really help myself out, but I’ll be glad when I finish!
I feel you. I've struggled with social anxiety in college as well, then it got much better (though pandemic made me relapse a bit unfortunately...). By any chance, are you getting some support to deal with it? Hypnosis helped me a great deal personally, I've heard some forms of therapy can be very effective as well.

thank you for this video! I recently found out I have asperger, which by te way many girls have, but will never know. However, asperger makes you feel different from your peers due to your different way of thinking and special interests. It’s hard to make friends sometimes. So I associated a lot with the video.

That last chat about friendships was very much needed. I've always struggled making friends and this first year of university AND with covid (which is a total nightmare when it comes to meeting people) was really hard talking to classmates or introducing myself. Anyway, what you said was so true: you don't have to meet your bff in the first year just because it's the "normal" or common thing to happen, don't rush situations and welcome them when they come!

I'm in third year of university and haven't made friends yet, because of shyness and covid that made it much worse. I also thought there would be like minded people in university, since i'm in med school and i expected everyone be super nerdy like me, but they are not (maybe because of my country where people are very outgoing). I put a lot of pressure on myself to be more open since i'll be a doctor, but i'm so shy and worried about what people will think about me. My therapist have been helping me with that. You are an introvert kind of person and when it comes to new bond and friendship with like-minded people you are feeling so special and grateful and that's so wonderful but at the same time it seems you are fear to get close to them and if it is so then you are absolutely right because people are like passengers you can hangout with them travel with them share things, moments but one day you will get apart and what finally you'll have is bitter sweet memories 🤍✨🌸 thats how my college life was.
What you said it's very true. Aside from the fact I had and have quite a strange experience with university due to family and health problems that oblidge me to stay away from my studies for years and return only recently, it's not said you have or can find friends at university or even high school...because it doesn't depend on you alone! People are often interested in a volatile connection, to have someone to talk to about classes and study/do homework together, but after the end of a course or your high school/university years, you might find they aren't interested in keeping in contact with you and that's ok, it's not your fault! Friendships aren't a one way road, if they aren't interested or are not deep people, the friendship dies no matter what you do. Also, there's this expectation that you will have a group of firends and that we all do stuff together and see each other even after years as nothing changed....NOPE, it's not realistic! I have 3 good friends from high school that only recently started to get along more and 2 from university and while everyone has something in common with me, they don't with each other and come from different backgrounds, so the only times we are together are my birthday and my family gatherings where/when even friends are included. It's not like in the movies or in the anime/manga, real life doesn't work like Saior Moon or Naruto, friends and boyfriends often don't like groups or don't want to spend more time than necessary with people that aren't you... Finally, remember that people change and many times, they feel they need to change or "upgrade" their social circle too and this has nothing to do with you or what you did.

A close friend is somebody you can both be yourself in comfort .. you can be polar opposites but once you share the same values and are respectful a great friendship will grow . Also as I grow older I feel you don’t need many friends.. to me 1 good one is enough.. everybody else keep at arms distance.
Many university counselors advise first year students to join a student club. Another way to make friends is to notice people in your classes who seem friendly and ask them to meet for coffee. Going to the common rooms in a student residence building to study is another method. Finally, in a student residence building, if someone leaves the door to their room open, it often means they are inviting people walking by to come in and introduce themselves.
Do you know what, I really resonated with you on the interests. I'm interested in transport, but not many people my age (16-17) are interested in. But I did find a friend who loved transport just as much as I do, and even though we only met in the September just gone, it feels like we've known each other for years. Having felt like an outsider, it can be hard, but people like you are out there - sometimes it just takes time! I think this is a very important topic to talk about because, as a result of COVID, I know more people are experiencing that sense of loneliness.

@@danpress07 I can defiantly relate, however in year 8 because of this I tried to fit in with other people and just try to be someone I wasn’t and that was when I found people who showed me I didn’t have to,and helped me embrace who I was. And honestly I love them so much, 3 years later they’re still my closet friends. They also like books as much as me, not necessarily school but learning things. You’ll find your people eventually, just don’t try to be someone you’re not to please others it really isn’t worth it.

I have few friends, I was ashamed when others asked about me how many friends I have got .But then I understood I love company of few friends instead of huge friend groups. I have few friends but our connection is deep and meaningful. As Ruby says enjoying the company of like minded people is so important and you never feel uncomfortable with such people .

The whole thing about friends, I really felt that. I never felt like I belonged to a group of friends, I had a friends from all over but I constantly felt "Out of place" and not fully accepted

I think it's a different story at uni when you're introverts like us, who may be super shy and have social anxiety on top of that- it takes longer to find close friends. 💜 It's okay though, because the waiting is so , so worth it when we DO find that really special kindred spirit! Your experience is just as valid, and you're still a great friend, regardless of your close friend circle number 💜
The message at the end was so comforting! I haven’t found many people at uni who I feel very close with yet and I felt so stressed out about it. But I know I’ll find some like-minded people soon

I only found 1 close friend at university and was a bit disappointed by that at the start. I tought that I would be in an environment with book lovers, wannabe writers, language nerds... But she's the best. Although I studied literature and languages, many people had other interests. Also, I still have some best friends from high school and we've seen each other much more outside for walks and picnics since covid. At work I found many like-minded collegaes who became friends. Strangely enough, it's easier to find friends who are diffrent from me.

This was a really lovely video. I start university in September and I’m extremely worried about finding like minded people. I’m naturally introverted but it doesn’t mean I enjoy being lonely by any means. My interests aren’t super mainstream. Going out drinking doesn’t exactly sound like a good time to me but I know university has a big drinking culture. It’s nice, though, to see you with Blakeney and have the idea reinforced that I shouldn’t give up if I don’t find my people immediately :)

Your friend group is so wholesome!! I didn't have any friends during my first year but once I found my close friends we clicked instantly!! It's so important to just wait it out and find those like-minded people rather than trying to fit into a group that doesn't really reflect yourself!!
Thank you so much Ruby! Really needed to hear this. I'm in my first year at Uni and there's definitley a pressure to make loads of friends and know everyone really well. But with Covid it's been so much harder to meet people and make friends, especially finding like minded people as societies haven't been doing much. And I've realised now that I'm not somebody who needs loads of friends anyway! You've just made me feel a lot less alone in this!! Also, my hometown is Exeter (I moved away to uni in London) so it was so lovely seeing clips of back home. I have to agree Sacred Grounds is lovely!! :) xxx

honestly i feel like there is a LOT of pressure around university social life. i finished my degree this year and honestly i wouldnt say i made a single friend there that i would call a life long friend and thats okay! sometimes your best friends are from other stages of your life and thats fine
I love your friends so much!!! Molly seems really sweet, and her smile is really infectious. Blakeney is like the mother of the group, and you can really feel she's warmhearted. And it's so lovely to see the 3 of you just enjoying the time of being together.
Uni is the best time to make deep friends, but as others have observed, don’t at feel bad if the people you really care about at this stage aren’t in your life in five years time after you all graduate. As the best works of literature tell us, life is dynamic and full of change, and losing people (through no fault of anyone) is natural. Just don’t lose your capacity to be open-hearted at any stage of your life.
Blakeney seems very raw and original. I feel like she's going to be extremely successful career-wise.

Thank you for this ruby. I have always felt like a bit of an outsider. Don’t get me wrong I have a fair few friends, but I don’t have any close friends who have the same interests as me. And especially over the last year I have come to realise I can go weeks without anyone messaging me, as before lockdown it was not as noticeable as you would see people every day.
But this video has really helped me, because at the end of the day we have our whole life, and I don’t mind waiting for a friend to come along who I am super close with, who enjoys reading, being outside and just spending time with me. It can be frustrating at times, but I am also happy with my own company. And that’s all that matters! To anyone out there feeling the same - There is nothing wrong with being “behind” everyone else (even thought at the end of the day there is no “behind” because time is a social construct!!). Everyone is different and sometimes it just takes a while for things to happen, you got this! 💕
That last bit was really helpful Ruby! Even though I'm not in university yet (still in year 8) but I feel like I'm in the same boat of struggling with minor bullying and not having very many close friends. Thank you so much for your positivity and having the courage to be your beautiful self 😊💕

I'm sorry to hear that Grace :( I hope everything is okay for you. Year 8 is a HARD year and people can be cruel. Just remember to hold onto the things you love and which make you different. Don't compromise them and yourself because staying true to yourself is genuinely the most important thing you can do (however cheesy that sounds!) x

I had the same issue in year 8, year 8 can be such a hard year socially. My advice is stay true to yourself, it’s easier said than done but If there is something I regret about being in year 8/9 it’s that I changed myself to try and fit in and it just wasn’t worth it. Until I found amazing friends who love and accept me, which is so so nice to have. I hope things get better. I left secondary school last week, and honestly on the last day I realised how much I didn’t care about these people’s opinions anymore which I had tried to fit in with.

Im graduating University in July, and for me Uni has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. I was the "weird" kid in school who was into very "geeky" and "nerdy" things that not a lot of others weren't into. Since going to University I've met the most non-judgemental and like-minded people. I couldn't be more thankful for my group of friends!

I actually got quite lucky that when I moved into shared accommodation they grouped me with a few people doing similar courses than me and we all just really got on. I met my best friend on the second night by chance because we sat next to her at a comedy show and she invited me and my flatmate for a drink after. I met a really good friend and my ex who is still one of my best friends in my lectures. I also joined some societies and they were great fun. Dont get me wrong Ive made and lost friends in my time at Uni but your true friends will always stick around. I hope this helps and good luck with Uni this year!! Youll absolutely have a blast and im sure youll make loads of friends
In 2016, when I was in grade 10, we did a 5-day tour to the UK.We rented houses in Canterbury, did a tour to London and visited Dover Castle and of course Canterbury Cathedral. I just loved everything, the atmosphere, the landscape, the people and even the weather. The video just made me a bit homesick, even though it was never my home, but it was so beautiful and I hope to travel to the UK for longer soon.

I find it impossible to make friends at uni. I’m a second year (also at Exeter) but haven’t made any friends really. I have social anxiety so I don’t really help myself out, but I’ll be glad when I finish!
I feel you. I've struggled with social anxiety in college as well, then it got much better (though pandemic made me relapse a bit unfortunately...). By any chance, are you getting some support to deal with it? Hypnosis helped me a great deal personally, I've heard some forms of therapy can be very effective as well.

I watch both yours and Molly's channels, and I absolutely love them. They're so cosy, and I love them. It was so wholesome. I loved this so much!! It is definitely going to be a vlog I will rewatch again and again. I definitely could agree on the segment at the end I was bullied through primary and secondary school because I wasn't interested in parties, hook up culture so I never got close friendships until I got to college or university and I've never been happier and next week I finish the second year of university. I love people like you Ruby, Molly and your friend Blakeley. Your tea segments are my favourite especially coming from a fellow tea lover. Sorry for any spelling or grammar mistakes I'm dyslexic.

thank you for this video! I recently found out I have asperger, which by te way many girls have, but will never know. However, asperger makes you feel different from your peers due to your different way of thinking and special interests. It’s hard to make friends sometimes. So I associated a lot with the video.
I've been friends with lots of toxic people in the past so I can understand how important it is to find like-minded people. So happy to watch this video and see that you've found those people Ruby!!! 😊😊
That last chat about friendships was very much needed. I've always struggled making friends and this first year of university AND with covid (which is a total nightmare when it comes to meeting people) was really hard talking to classmates or introducing myself. Anyway, what you said was so true: you don't have to meet your bff in the first year just because it's the "normal" or common thing to happen, don't rush situations and welcome them when they come!

I think the important bit is that regardless of how many friends you meet, is that how much you have in common with them. I didn’t find my people in uni until well into my second year. They are still my friends and they’re pretty much the best support group ever, even after graduation. I’m glad that you have that in Blakeney! ♥️

I am naturally introvert and shy and the remote learning makes it even harder for me to connect with people. I’m going to graduate next year and with all the online classes I’m worried now that I’ll never find such friends in university but your video helped me see the whole situation in a mode positive light. I'm in third year of university and haven't made friends yet, because of shyness and covid that made it much worse.
I also thought there would be like minded people in university, since i'm in med school and i expected everyone be super nerdy like me, but they are not (maybe because of my country where people are very outgoing).
I put a lot of pressure on myself to be more open since i'll be a doctor, but i'm so shy and worried about what people will think about me. My therapist have been helping me with that.

You are an introvert kind of person and when it comes to new bond and friendship with like-minded people you are feeling so special and grateful and that's so wonderful but at the same time it seems you are fear to get close to them and if it is so then you are absolutely right because people are like passengers you can hangout with them travel with them share things, moments but one day you will get apart and what finally you'll have is bitter sweet memories 🤍✨🌸 thats how my college life was.
What you said it's very true. Aside from the fact I had and have quite a strange experience with university due to family and health problems that oblidge me to stay away from my studies for years and return only recently, it's not said you have or can find friends at university or even high school...because it doesn't depend on you alone! People are often interested in a volatile connection, to have someone to talk to about classes and study/do homework together, but after the end of a course or your high school/university years, you might find they aren't interested in keeping in contact with you and that's ok, it's not your fault! Friendships aren't a one way road, if they aren't interested or are not deep people, the friendship dies no matter what you do.
Also, there's this expectation that you will have a group of firends and that we all do stuff together and see each other even after years as nothing changed....NOPE, it's not realistic! I have 3 good friends from high school that only recently started to get along more and 2 from university and while everyone has something in common with me, they don't with each other and come from different backgrounds, so the only times we are together are my birthday and my family gatherings where/when even friends are included. It's not like in the movies or in the anime/manga, real life doesn't work like Saior Moon or Naruto, friends and boyfriends often don't like groups or don't want to spend more time than necessary with people that aren't you...
Finally, remember that people change and many times, they feel they need to change or "upgrade" their social circle too and this has nothing to do with you or what you did.
This vlog just made me fall in love with this channel all over again.

A close friend is somebody you can both be yourself in comfort .. you can be polar opposites but once you share the same values and are respectful a great friendship will grow . Also as I grow older I feel you don’t need many friends.. to me 1 good one is enough.. everybody else keep at arms distance.

Many university counselors advise first year students to join a student club. Another way to make friends is to notice people in your classes who seem friendly and ask them to meet for coffee. Going to the common rooms in a student residence building to study is another method. Finally, in a student residence building, if someone leaves the door to their room open, it often means they are inviting people walking by to come in and introduce themselves.
The vlog brings me back to Exeter and reminds me of the good times in uni with my friends ❤️
Do you know what, I really resonated with you on the interests. I'm interested in transport, but not many people my age (16-17) are interested in. But I did find a friend who loved transport just as much as I do, and even though we only met in the September just gone, it feels like we've known each other for years. Having felt like an outsider, it can be hard, but people like you are out there - sometimes it just takes time! I think this is a very important topic to talk about because, as a result of COVID, I know more people are experiencing that sense of loneliness.

And honestly I love them so much, 3 years later they’re still my closet friends. They also like books as much as me, not necessarily school but learning things. You’ll find your people eventually, just don’t try to be someone you’re not to please others it really isn’t worth it.
