Just guessing here, but wouldn’t the asterisks, and some pedal notations in parens, indicate that there was some editing involved? Since we can’t see what comments the parens are referring to, perhaps they are pointing out Beethoven’s own notations. I well remember my Schnabel edition of the sonatas. Occasionally one staff of music at the top of the page, the rest devoted his editorial comments, in three languages of course.
@@clkvlk Have a look on Stephan Moeller & Ashkenazy live 1980 and you may understand. Kempf is a bit overrated on that recording. Really good, but Guilels and others are up.

As much as I like kempff, I somehow disagree with this performance. I can tell he spent time with this..but it just feels off
Why is that? It is a beautifully mature interpretation full of musicality.
