Thanks so much, Rus. You always do such a fantastic job in showcasing communal pet arthropods and educating the community about them!
Thank you Peter! I couldn’t have done it without you and Jesse!
Do you ship to canada? i've been looking for diving beetles but i havent found any
@@Rio56780 I don’t actually sell these, you can check with www.bugsincyberspace.com, not sure if shipping to Canada is possible, but worth asking
wow this takes me back to my childhood of finding native beetles like this, catching them, observing them and then letting them go. I used to volunteer at a local nature center, we took school groups out into the woods and the aquatic insects day was by far my favorite. The backswimmers and whirly gigs are by far my all-time favorite.
Aquatic insects are hard to beat! I remember going on a school trip to the lake, bringing a damselfly naiad home, and finding it as an adult a few weeks later!
@@Aquarimax so cool and so fun!
All these bugs in the aquarium just look super awesome. Especially the backswimmers, they are amazing 😍
They are! Fantastic little creatures!
Those sunburst diving beetles look amazing. Really looking forward for your experieces with them.
I’m so amazed by this. I’d love a care video on the general care of the insects you have.
Its surreal going from different parts of the country and seeing such different critters doing the same jobs. I remember on the east coast finding a true wealth of complex micro crustaceans just by walking to local parks. But here in the midwest it's insects all the way down. For now the boatmen are my favorite. But Im definitely going to try and set up a toad bug paludarium at some point.
I love bugs. Spiders critters wild life these are awesome. Thanks for showing them off. Cool stuff
"the arthropod analog to popcorn" 😂 too true. So excited to set up one of these tanks!
Yea! bugs! these little guys are so nostalgic
So true!
Fantastic!!! What an wonderful setup. I’m now inspired to build one this weekend. Great video!
Those beetles are stunning! Never really caught or saw any aquatic insects but they're really cool!
They definitely command my attention!
If you're anywhere in the midwest, you should have a go at a local pond or lake. Actually, mud pits with only about an inch of water will have boatmen in spades.
Those are superb 🔥🔥🔥 i love the beetle swimming in the middle!🔥
This is incredible, Rus! This video legitimately made me feel like a kid again, with the awe and wonder of seeing something so fascinating. Can't wait to see more of this aquarium. Have you ever considered keeping the fully aquatic species of freshwater isopods? Also, do these aquatic beetles go through a larval stage like their terrestrial counterparts? I wonder if they do, are the larva also aquatic...
Glad you like it! The first isopods I kept and bred (more than 30 years ago) were actually freshwater aquatic isopods!
Yes, all of the aquatic beetles have larval stages, and many (perhaps all) are aquatic, but must pupate terrestrially.
Awesome unboxing Rus and Amazing tank setup for the beetles
Just got 4 sunburst and 4 banded from BICS... they are great!
This was fantastic 👏 👌 I listened to your livestream on this topic, and I really want to try some.
I would suggest "Hamburger Mattenfilter" as they are known in Germany. A big Foam Block with air driven waterpumps.
Ah yes, I have seen the Hamburg Mattenfilters (and built similar filters). They would be a good option.
This is awesome!!!
So cool!!
Wow Rus those are nice water Beatles this tank is dope
Awesome tank, enjoy.
i agree with one of the comments here, you should definitely do a room tour. BTW awesome set up my guy!
Thank you! I do need to do a room tour again, it has been a while!
I love this I might have to pick some up I had a similar setup when I was a kid
you can use better stronger filters like the aqua clear style if you want the water movement to keep debris from settling around, but on the intake tubes you need pre filter sponges, and make sure they are on tight, but you can get good ones that are dense enough to keep the pets from going in, but still let's water flow strong.
I'm not sure if you need the same water chemistry with these as fish, like watching nitrites nitrates and ammonia and such? But if beneficial bacteria is good for this tank like fish and shrimp, you can add a decent sponge filter too.
Anyways, yeah so pre sponge on other filters intake tube is key, that's how you do shrimp tanks.
killer looking tank, later bud
Pls do a room tour for all of your animals! Thanks
Great unboxing. But slightly off subject, where did you buy your Blue Beetles from your live stream yesterday? I would love to add those to my collection but never strayed from dubia & isopods so not sure where to go. Thanks for all your wisdom!
A great source for Blue Death-Feigning Beetles is www.bugsincyberspace.com !
Why not just use a good sponge filter? BUT....now I want to set one up too
I think a sponge filter would work well!
Amazing little bugs! Do you keep a lid on their enclosure?
Thanks! Yes, there is definitely a lid…most of these are excellent fliers.
This is a very cool idea. I really want to try it now. Maybe see what sort of aquatic insects can mix well with other inverts/fish. Water boatman seem safe? Great video!
These will all get along well with each other, but relative few do well with fish.
So sorry about the back swimmers we all make mistakes
Very nice...such a cool tank! ❤
Thank you very much!
very awesome man
Great video, I love it. :-) From which country the bugs came from? Are they all wild caught?
These are all native to the US. These individuals are wild caught, but I will be captive breeding at least some of them.
Great box of goodies Rus! I love his (forgot his name again 😆) videos, they're right up there with yours lol
I love Peter’s videos too!
@@Aquarimax TY! I always forget his name. Do you do all your streams so late at night mate? I'm British...hard work to join at 1 am lol
@@themantisgarden Most of the streams are around the same time, as I start not long after I get home from work. When I am on vacation I try to do some earlier streams though!
@@Aquarimax Ah, fair enough. I thought you did the animals as your job mate.
@@themantisgarden I wish it were full time. It’s a supplemental job at this point. I can only imagine what I could accomplish if it were my day job!
Bugs in cyberspace are the best I got all my Millipedes from them and all going strong 7+ months later
Bugs in Cyberspace is amazing! Highly recommended on all counts. 🙌
Not gonna ly an I'm well in to fish an aquascaping for years an never never seen or hurd of any of these 😅love in them tho 😊❤ fire bud
Had a aquatic beetle end up in my fish tank, when I collected some natural sticks before adding the fish themselves.
Took about 2 days until it decided to fly away.
Not sure if it didnt like the tropical temps or the small copapods or whatever they are called werent sufficient food, but you probably want a good lid on your tank.
Are the beetles you got native or tropical species?
Eighter way probably prudent to avoid escapees.
Really cool animals to observe though :)
These are all native US species, and YES, a good lid is important. I added some extra screen to cover the small gap along the back to avoid escapees. 👍🏼
Will come a feeding video?
Definitely! Very soon!
They look so cool, but most of these can fly don't they?
How do you keep them in the aquarium?
I have a secure lid on the aquarium, with extra screening to fill in the gap in the back
Would a 20 gallon tall be good for some of the smaller species? I remember when I used to live in southern Louisiana, and my family and I would go crawfishing, a lot, and we'd catch the massive black water bugs around 1 to 2 inches long. I just want to know what they where.
A 20 g tall is the size of my tank in the video, it works well! Try googling the genus Lethocerus, (Giant water bug) see if that is the creature you are talking about. If not, try the genus Hydrophilus (giant diving beetle).
@@Aquarimax thanks so much it was hydrophilus ovatus
Do you own any moths? Edit also can your tag isopods because I have a pregnant one and I want to see if I can tag her other than isolating her because of how low my population is right now is there a non toxic paint I could buy on a part of her back ?
What are the foods for these astonishing creatures amazing video Russ ❤❤❤ these are everywhere in Florida waterways makes me miss Florida even more
They eat things like frozen bloodworms, fish food pellets, and soft-bodies insects…some eat algae and detritus too
@@Aquarimax nice the cleaning crew of the waterways I like it
wonder whats their diet
Most of them will eat frozen bloodworms, fish food pellets, and soft-bodied insects. Some will eat detritus and algae too.
Do you know what size tank I could use for three garter snakes I am planning on breeding and am wondering if a 4x2x2 tank will work for them?
Yes, that will work for a trio of garters, even the larger species. Just make sure they can’t escape!
@@Aquarimax thank you so much, I have been looking for the tank size but couldn’t manage to find it anywhere. I will make sure they can’t escape.
can they fly?
Most can fly very well, so a good cover for the aquarium is a must.
What do they eat?
A feeding video for this tank drops tomorrow morning!
@@Aquarimax
👍🏻
What do they need for feed?
They eat things like frozen bloodworms, fish food pellets, and soft-bodied insects. Some eat algae and detritus as well.
@@Aquarimax nice, that's easy. I collect and keep water-striders but need to buy fruit flies for them, kind of a pain.
@@fernalicious I offer the whirligigs fruit flies , but since I am breeding them anyway, not much of an issue in my case.
Hey Rus, I am planning on breeding garter snakes, I want to make a bio active enclosure with three garter snakes, is a 4x2x2 foot enclosure good? I have been trying to find wooden vivariums as the glass ones are quite pricey, I went to a local pet shop and they were telling me about this wood vivarium which is supposedly waterproof; however, when I searched up the brand online it doesn’t mention anything about it being waterproof, it does come readily built and says it’s sealed though. I’m a beginner and am not sure whether I should trust them, does sealed mean waterproof, I wouldn’t want to spend money on a vivarium for it to get ruined. Also do you think dairy cow Isopods would go well with the garter snakes, I just ordered some and am going to breed those aswell and was planning on putting them in once I had the bioactive vivarium set up. What are your thoughts?
1st Awesome video thanks for sharing
You got first! 🙌
no giant water bugs (Lethocerus sp.) 0/10
I am interested in getting one, but surely you realize that if I put one in here, it wouldn’t be long before that was the only aquatic insect I had! 😂
@@Aquarimax they are communal with each other from my experience. Only issues I had with them was they lived to fly around my house at night time abd land in my bed lol
But how can you not get the apex predator of aquatic insects before the other stuff lol
@@periplanetamissionary adults are communal with each other, yes. Not so much with other species. 🤣The day will come, I am sure, when I get one (or more). They are pretty fantastic!
Plz in the future if you can, step up the unboxing in a different way? It's beyond hard to hear you over the sound of the paper which is quite horrible sounding.
I had a mic issue this time, which I was unaware of until I had already filmed it. I did attempt to reduce the paper crackling sounds in editing, but there wasn’t a lot I could do this time due to the failure of my microphone. I’ve ordered new mics though, hopefully that will help for next time!
I was bitten by a water boatman in an aquarium. It came in with shipment of feeder fish. I tried to scoop it out in my hand. I was quite painful. Every time I throw one out of my swimming pool, they fly right back in.
I have been bitten by a few of those myself. The worst aquatic insect bite was from a Giant Water Bug.
