This episode covers the 1956 Hungarian revolution in which Hungary, under Imre Nagy, demanded independence from the USSR's sphere of influence.
Recommended books:
Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945 by Tony Judt. Best book on the period available. Absolutely phenomenal and a complete tome (worth every penny, though).
A Concise History of Hungary by Miklós Molnár. Like all of the other books in this series its a fantastic introduction to all Hungarian history. Not the cheapest but still a great book for people interested in both Communist and all other Hungarian history.
I'd like to apologise to any Hungarians watching for butchering your language. I tried, though.
Also, next week's videos will be 'The July Revolution' and 'The Fall of the Knights Templar'.
How did you post this 4 hours ago when the video said three minutes ago? RUclips really drunk or was this unlisted?

When are you going to continue English and British History?
Fun fact: The Soviet invasion of Hungary caused most of the members of the British Communist Party to quit in protest and the remaining members who supported the invasion were referred to derisively as "tankies."
Is that were the work "tankie" came from? :o
@@Debre. yes as the Soviets suppressed the revolution in Budapest with T55s
History Matters is pretty accurate with the depiction of guns. This video features the PPsH and the AK-47. Film smuggled out of Hungary showing the Soviet crackdown was the way that most in the west became aware of the new Soviet rifle, the AK-47.
well, its great to know britain supported hungary
Also in the US, long-time members of the Communist Party USA also left the party over Hungary.
Russians in a Hungarian revolution?
It's like 1848 all over again
Good one
I wonder what happened to those banners that the USSR returned to Hungary in 1940. Did the Soviets take them back or something?
@@Csetnikke Interesting.
Are you kidding me? Colleges student wrote a manifesto to the Soviets w/ their demands. The liars (Soviets) agreed to them & left Hungary but came back & that was the 1956 Hungarian Revolution which my father took part in. My mom had left a few yrs. prior to. I have the pictures my dad took of the Soviet tanks rolling into Budapest while Hungarians were getting off of work. The Hungarians blew up tanks, hung the communists in the streets, etc. The average age of the Freedom Fighter was 18 yrs. old. But 14 yr. old girls & boys also fought w/ the weapons my dad had hidden & gave to them.
@@liliankuhn4671 Blimey, you seem to be a wellspring of historical information. May I please have a sort of interview with you regarding this subject, which I would like to record?
A Hungarian friend told me about a 16 year old arrested in the 50s in Hungary for stealing food. The authorities convicted him but were concerned about maintaining a humanitarian image. So he was hung on his 18th birthday.
That is evil
Very evil

Well, atleast they are patient enough, what an evil gentleman
oh no this does not happen here in the west, if u steal u don't go in jail. imagine stealing food in a society where food and work are guaranteed that's a cap
My grandad was one of those many thousands of people to flee Hungary during the revolution and he revisited many times years later to see family and friends. He went to the old Secret Police HQ many years after the fall of the USSR whilst it was a museum and saw that on the walls were memorials and names of people tortured and executed by the Secret Police and he cried because he recognised a name as being one of his old friends that he didn’t know had been killed.
That is so sad. I am Bulgarian (British-born), my parents didn't flee from purge, but rather for better economic opportunities, because Bulgaria was in a bad economic state (btw we visit regularly, and I honestly prefer to call myself Bulgarian, not British). The saddest part of Cold War Bulgaria was the collectivisation of Agriculture. My grandparents tell me experiences of how during early socialism, their friends relied on livestock which they loved, but then the socialist guards came over and took the livestock. It's honestly really sad, and even if I wasn't alive then, I am always on the verge of tears when I think about or when my grandparents tell me about stories from the agriculture-collectivisation and seizing of livestock. Perhaps communism could have turned out well long-term, but it didn't, and the country never returned to old status-quo post-socialism, hence why the country is corrupt and in ruins now. At least there are still beautiful parts of the country worth visiting.
The museum nowadays is called the house of terror. It was th HQ both the Nazis and the communist secret police the AVH.
You should do a video on the Tito-Stalin Split, and maybe the Sino-Soviet split.
I second this, not a lot of videos on these 2 topics which were of BIG geopolitical importance.
Krazy Klimax Excellent suggestion.
And the sino-albanese later on
I always found it interesting how the Yugoslavs, the Chinese, and the Albanians stood up to the Soviets. Even the Poles in the early 20's and the Finn's in the Winter War fought for what was right. Just goes to show how you should feel pride towards your nation.
Second a video on the Sino-Soviet split

It woul've been really cool if the revolution had prevailed and Hungary adopted the flag with the hole in the middle.
We eventually did get our freedom back from the communists and we have our own crest there now instead of the communist one
Romania did the exact same thing and cut a hole in their flag when they revolted, and when they won they filled it up with the modern tri-colour. I think Hungary probably would have done a similiar thing, although a flag with a hole would be cool
If they did all Country "Balls" of Hungary would be Donuts
@@baseddepartment9983 I think it'd be cool both Hungary and Romania had their official flags with a hole in the middle as a "never forget" symbol
Yeah, I kinda wish they kept that general shape, instead of just slapping three lines down, like literally every other country in Europe.
Fun fact, the olympics were held in the same year, and Hungary, who was independent for like half a year, got a team of their own into the year's Olympics.
This is significant because that year the water polo finals was between the Soviet Union and Hungary. And what ensued was the most brutal and violent olympic match in history. The water in the pool turned red from the blood, players on both sides were coming in and out of the match with broken bones, cuts, bites, and fractures. And in the end, the Hungarians won gold.
It was a powerful symbol for us at the time. We have always been good at water polo. And even if the Soviets eventually stopped our revolution, we still beat the shit out of them in the Olympics.
Hungary was not part of the USSR, they were only a satellite state of the Soviets, but a nation on their own right. They had their own team at every Olympics since 1896 (except for 1920 and 1984 when they did not compete).
Ha magyar vagy akkor hogy tudsz ilyen baromságokat írni?
As a water polo player, I know things can escalate, but holy crap man
When Nagy Imre was executed , he was just thrown somewhere random without a proper burial. He was later identified by his clothing by some family members
In 1989.06.16 a re-burial was held in Budapest Heroes’ square , over 20 thousand people showed up. Just a few months later , Hungary was officially finally democratic
Let me add that the communists wrapped his corpse in barbed wire and buried him face down.

@Ararune there was a soviet symbol in the middle, so the people cut it out
@Ararune Only during the national holiday on 23 October that commemorates this revolution. The flag with the hole is cool and all, but I don't think it's very healthy to be defined by one particular (heroic yet) tragic event.
Buildings on Museum Island in Berlin still have bullet holes in them. Some are quite large😶
I know in Sarajevo there are buildings famous for having bullet holes, due to Yugoslav wars
Some of those holes are actually from 1848. Or just from WW2. There's actually some places where there's cannonballs stuck in the walls to this day.

Of course! The word "short" is relative, and when put into the context of the grand scheme, soviet influence over Hungary would seem short.
But you can apply that argument anywhere, and it would always make an event seem short, even half a century.
When viewed from the perspective of the hungarian people, then some even lived their entire lives under this athorotarian regime, that if they spoke out about almost anyhing, they'd be arrested, or denied pretty much all opportunities in live.

I think one of the biggest mistakes the US made was to not offer some support to the Hungarians. I've read they genuinely believed they would get Western support.
@Roman Ball That, plus the Suez crisis was going on at the exact same time for the Western powers, and the USSR agreed to stay out of that if the west did the same for Hungary.
Thomas Reed, like S Atazas said, the US didn't support Hungary because around that same time Britain and Israel were in Egypt, without the US being informed before hand. It would have been two faced in the eyes of the international community for the US to help Hungary while the Suez Crisis was happening.
They didn't do that because at the same time they were backing the English and French Imperialists who were attacking Egypt in the Suez crisis. Learn REAL history.

My grandpa told me a story when I asked him about the events of '56. "After the revolution broke out and we had no food left, we had to stand in line for bread. There I was standing in the line at the mere age of 12 with my mother and a soviet tank just rolled around the corner and shot into the crowd thinking we were protesters. Thankfully my mother dropped to the ground in time so were weren't caught."
Even the Soviet troops didn't know where they are. Many believed they were fighting in Afghanistan so I'm not surprised they couldn't tell the difference between protest and standing in line for bread.

@_jeff _ By that logic the US is also very imperialist.
@_jeff _ I'm just saying...calling the USSR imperialist doesn't make it by definition bad, other countries that are respected today are/were also imperialist.
One thing not mentioned in this clip (presumably to keep it short):
The USSR had been pulling troops out of Hungary, unsure of how to handle the situation. Then the Suez Crisis happened when Israel, France and the UK invaded Egypt.
The USSR used this to divert attention from Hungary and theatrically threatened to fire nuclear missiles at France and the UK, scaring everyone that WW3 might start. With the diversion successful, that’s when the Soviets sent in the tanks!
This was another reason why Eisenhower was so angry at the British, French, and Israelis.
Underestimated comment. After Stalin's death western and eastern block countries were trying to push and scavenge neutral or weak states. Most people don't know but majority of hungarian revolters were fascist troops pardoned by government after war. Well, they just took a bit of time, organised and tried to seize the power when winners killing pro-commue civilians they could get. There were no «democratic» forces in this battle. Just remember - if students are revolting, it means something is very cheesy and will be a lot of blood to justify even more blood.

After the revolution, Hungary ended up passing reforms anyway becoming the most liberal country in the Warsaw Pact.
Kádár has a very mixed reputation in Hungary. For one, he was the one who betrayed the revolution and sided with the Soviets who made him the leader of the country, and which resulted in the execution and imprisonment of hundreds. On the other hand, he was the one who initiated reforms starting in the 1960s and made Hungary the most liberal country in the Warsaw Pact, with relatively good living standards compared to other Eastern Bloc nations and was well-liked by the majority of people during his 30-year reign.
@@neonknights TBH it is hard to choose who didn't betray the revolution. :D Nagy Imre also denied the people of their will of change which led to the long protest in front of the Parliament and ended in the shootings. Later on he came back and sided with them again but it was also a betrayal. Also let's not forget how the Police and the army itself basically vanished from Budapest. They basically were like -> yep, f*ck this, I am going to relatives in the countryside. And only after Kádár came with the russians they came back :D Also in the early days of the revolution it was mostly the intellectuals who started it but later on they just left and the working class fought. 1956 - the year my mother fled Hungary - but her mother and sister remained. She made her way to Austria and accepted an arranged marriage with my father (who immigrated to the US shortly after the war and was sponsored by the US soldiers who captured him around Normandy as a 17 year old “soldier” working in NYC as a long shore man and then an accountant... also fought for the - right - side in Korea) my mother didn’t dare to go back until 1977 when her mom was dying and my brother and I got to see Communism first-hand... a neighbor at my aunt’s apartment reported “Americans” to the secret police... decades late I went back in 1992 and that same neighborhood apologized and became a close friend
The rebels had 3 major groups.
Group 1: the anti-stalinist socialists who wanted a council republic like in the 1919 hungarian soviet republic.
Group 2: the liberals who wanted a western liberal democracy.
Group 3: the fascists who wanted to return into Nickolas Horthy's fasistic system or to a similar fascist system.
The only common thing about these groups was that all of them wanted an independent Hungary.
Since the government (1956-89) kept everything in secret it's impossible to know which group was the majority or the minority and anyone who claims that they know is a lier.

Yes! More cold war vids please!
My grandfather was one of the Hungarians who fled after the failed revolution; he still has a hole in his head from being shot by the soviets
"Sent to Romania"
Ah, the worst possible fate for a Hungarian.
As a Hungarian, i have nightmares about it all the time
I really love your videos. On the point short and overall exactly what is needed to get quick information that doesn't make someone bored and forget everything. Only the pronunciation of names confuses me. Other than that great job and thank you.
The thing that gets me is the people who still think socialism/communism is a good system.
True, it literally has never even come close to working as intended.
I live in Canada and the owner of a local bakery had a father who fled Hungary after the revolution.
Great video, however it wasn't soviet troops who shot at the protesters in front of the Parliament, rather the Hungarian secret police known as ÁVH. There is a good book on the events from first hand accounts from Éva Orbán. Not sure if there is an English print however.
@@romanchannel69 Yes and in this specific case, HM is referring to the shooting of the protesters outside the parliament building. That was done by the ÁVH, not soviet troops.
Would you consider diving into some Polish history?
Poland relevant!
Yet some ppl say that communism is good. Imre Nagy was a true patriotic leader to his people.
He himself was a communist though, just less Stalinist
@@mylerwilson4879 still, there is a difference between wanting reforms and beating random people to death who said something bad about the government
And most Russians still don't know why most Europeans can't stand them.
Well it is the Soviet Union not just russia
@@BuiltSimilarG Yes you are right, but that doesn't make a difference for us. 1953, 1956 and 1968 all the orders came from Moscow. And when you look at the symbol of the Russian Army they still use the Red Star.
@@23GreyFox The emblem of the Russian Armed Forces does *not* include the red star. Also, Russian people hardly have any fault here. They're an entirely new generation, and they didn't support such suppression of rights made by the USSR during the Cold War. And to be completely fair, during the aforementioned Cold War, the US also invaded and staged coup d'etats on many government, mostly in South and Central America
@@dion0 The last time i saw Russian tanks and rockets on TV they all had a big red star on the side. And i'm not from central- or south America. So long the Russians don't acknowledge these crimes, there will be no friendship of any kind.
@@23GreyFox The red star you see on Russian ground forces is used as a victory mark, referring to the Red Army's win in the "Great Patriotic War" (WW2) and it's not used to signify that Russians are communists or that they're proud of the USSR's crimes, rather it signifies a victory. Also, I didn't say that you are from South or Central America, I brought it up as a point that the USSR wasn't the only one suppressing rights (although the US did it in a way less bloodier way). Lastly, Russians do acknowledge these crimes; They know what they've done, but once again, Russians of this day have no connection to that
Fun fact: Imre Nagy first looked for an asylum in the Yugoslav embassy and was granted, however after some secret meetings and deals with the Soviets he was handed over. Rumors have it that at the same time Yugoslavia got their first research nuclear reactors from the Soviets, probably as a sign of appreciation.
Rather shitty behaviour from Tito.
My great grandfather was banned from Hungary for most of his adult life due too his involvement in the Hungarian revolution and was present at the Budapest massacre
Ah,yes the cold war the fight between two anti - imperialist superpowers unless,it was their imperialism.
1st history matters video i watched, now i have a playlist with all your videos in
A supposed workers government that makes calling for strikes punishable by death... In Hungary was for all workers of the world to see, just what the USSR was: NOT a workers state.
It’s a totalitarian state that’s failed at becoming at becoming a workers state. Thanks Lenin and Stalin
The Hungarian secret police (AVH, originally AVO) fired into unarmed crowds. One example was in a town called Mosonmagyarovar. 52 were killed including children and a 18 month old baby. This organization was deeply feared and hated by the Hungarian people. During the revolution, many AVH were lynched. One of the victories of the revolution was the disbanding of the AVH.
Can we have a video on Mikloš Horthy, please?
He was there when Communists took control of Hungary for the 1st time after Great War and he crushed it and became the Regent of Kingdom.
he was a fascist sympathizer
Massive fascist and nazi cooperator
we dont have the š in hungarian, its a regular s. to make the s sound we use sz
Bad idea, it would cause a massive shitstorm. He is a very polarizing person in Hungary, some hail him as the last bastion of patriotism, old fashioned moralty and highlight his attempts at putting and end to deportation of jewish Hungarians. Others focus on his autoritarian governance, his Mussolini-esque strongman image and the antisemitic laws and atrocities that were so common in the era defined by his name.
@_jeff _ He still collaborated with the nazis and committed war crimes against serbs in Vojvodina
I have to do an 500-word history essay on the Hungarian and Czechoslovakian revolution so this really helped :)
00:00 NO ONE DIED
00:12 your attention span is less than 12 seconds, congratulations.
Itsuki YAMAGUCHI you’re a dumbass
A certain Hero died
@@itsuki6883 he didn't do the dead part first because stalin was responsible for hungary, if he showed stalin dying first and then hungary being communist people might think nikita was responsible for this. so he is right dumbass since it still showed someone dying in the first part, good job showing your lack of proper insults by using godwin's law
"Sent to romania" like its the worst punishement lol
This is all sounding quite familiar in light of recent events...
The demonstrations started in solidarity with the Polish strikers. Workers and ordinary citizens joined the crowd and moved to the radio station where the cowardly secret police fired into the crowd. And the rest is history.
"He was still a communist, he just preferred a more decentralized version of communism." Moscow: "Woah now ..."
