Hey PREPAREDMIND101 thanks for taking the time to review the Birler™. Really enjoyed your feedback and i liked the stain you used. Just wanted to let you know that the sheath is available for this item so should anyone need it you can get it now. Thanks again!
I'm Norwegian,, Danish, Irish and Scottish so when I see an axe like this I know what it can do and how functional it is. Where My people come from it's called a Skeggox axe. It can seriously clean house in a full out bezerker. I believe that is what it is made for.
if you're currently thinking of getting one of these axes, get a husqavarna carpenters axe. equivalent size and shape, and comes with an awesome mask for about $45
This axe/hatchet was designed by Elmer Roush for the Forged By War program. 10% of net profit goes to the designers choice of veteran charity. In the case of Mr. Roush, that is the Green Beret Foundation. Just for those who like to know a little background of the gear.
that cut out in the blade of the hatchet will also, if weilded in the left hand, allow you to hook your opponents shield and pull it down facillitating an overhand strike with your becker in your right hand........i mean if you should ever find occasion to do so.
I picked up a Birler at a Palmetto State Armory store while in SC recently. I did not like the handle. I put it back down. If they had sanded it and made it look nice like you did I would likely have bought it. It looks like it would chop well.
It's a good looking ax/hatchet that seems to be good for camp chores and easy to carry through heavy brush due to the lightweight design. Thanks for the video.
Sorry to go off topic. Been ordering good gear for over a year now and have had some exciting times camping on my island and in the jungle despite back problems. Well it is over now. 2 months ago I developed sciatica. Can't even sit in a chair now for more than 10 minutes. MRI shows last 4 vertebra so destroyed I need surgery and a bone graft but hey I got an idea. Prepping for the disabled or for those very limited. After all it's all survival right and the right mental attitude to do it.
Sorry to hear that I also have a bad back injury and it is hard but once you have the surgery it does get easier and you will get back out there. Treat it like a goal but it will take time took me 6 years but I'm back out there you do sometimes have your bad days with pain but sometimes you have those great days hang in there but great idea with the disabled side of it.
I hope all goes well and that you can do some bush crafting without pain! My father had a bad back, neck, and knees from being a paratrooper. I understand your pain from him. Good luck man.
I'm not much on axes/hatchets either. They are heavy to pack in and out on backpack trips. On another topic, what's your take on Smith and Wesson buying Taylor Brands/Schrader? Do you think it will affect the manufacturing of the Schrader brand including Jess-X?
Is there a source for the genuine Jessica X, or will someone produce it again? I gather that Schrade has sold out, and by that I don't mean that they're out of stock. :)
I know you have the SCAXE2L and now this one... which do you prefer and why? It would be interesting if you did a head to head of both axe's . I nearly bought the SCAXE2L but when I saw this one, I liked the look so much better. Thoughts?
This video convinced me that a Jessica X is a better tool for most jobs. I like to process wood for fires and cooking (makes temp control easier) and the birler axe really struggled with that task.
I enjoyed the video and I applaud your invitingly a knowledgable "axe man" to assist in providing a first rate evaluation. My CKRT hawk required a lot of filing and honing to make it usable so they could improve edge finishing. Two thumbs for this evaluation. Tedd
Hi Chris, serious question for you, for backpacking in a wooded east coast region, if your choice was between a CRKT Berler and the Condor parang which would you choose?
I received my CRKT Birler Pack axe this week and I also was not fond of that orange stain they used on the handle. I've already sanded it off and will go to the trusty boiled linseed. I was not impressed by whatever they had dipped the axe head in and promptly removed it with sanding before finishing the edge. My edge was slightly ground uneven with a slight rolling that I had to touch up while sharpening. It also appeared that there was a slight gap around the handle and axe head opening all the way around. Although the head feels very tight, I'm concerned about it loosening with heavy use in time. The handle was a little too undersized when they fit it I think. I found the handle a little thin for my big paws and wish they had incorporated a swell at the handle end. However, CRKT's other tomahawks had some minor issues as well, and I still love them both. I'm sure I'll grow to love this one just as much after I finish tweaking it to my liking. Not bad for a production piece, though.
I like the shape of the head on this although the chogen seems to be more efficient. with the 2 handles, 1 for camp tasks and the long one from the war hammer for serious processing its a weight saver.
I like the Jess x but will she drive tent stakes like this hatchet? I think not. I guess I'm partial to axes/hatchet's being that those are about all we had growing up in the Southern Illinois Shawnee National Forest. ( besides the old hickory butcher knife and the Barlow pocket knife. Great vid. just bought my grandson a CRKT Chogan t-hawk for his 12th birthday.
Hey Chris those CRKT sheaths are on sale for around $30, decent two snap leather sheath, dark tan-ish in color, not bad at all. Wish they would finish the handles better too, after sanding, restaining and sharpening I really like mine. Whatever stain they used looked like a water base stain that they dipped the handles in, that crap needs to go! Good vid, thanks.
I like CRKT and I like this axe, however, I believe large axe and a good knife will cover it. If space or weight aren't issues (driving instead of hiking), then I'd love to have this packed! Good review.
There are people out there who say this axe is no good. But then again, as I watch them I notice they really don't know what they are doing. I've been using either a Tomahawk or Estwing hatchet for camping since the early 80's. My new favorite Tomahawk is the Cold Steel Rifleman's Hawk. Plus I like the longer handle.
Just proves that any crazy sharp edge will be able to do (some) campy crafty stuff. On the plus side an axe splits wood with little effort compared to batoning. Although when out and about I prefer my knives.
My CRKT was not very sharp when I received it. I was not impressed at all considering the price I paid. After using the bastard file/Lansky puck method to sharpen it, this hatchet cuts/chops extremely well and I am happy with it now. Thanks for the review
Others have pretty much mentioned this, but with so many quality axes and hatchets out there...Velvicut from the USA, Helko from Germany, and the numerous options from Sweden, you chose to go with a hatchet made in Taiwan???
+jonnyt16 I'm in the review business, not the axe snob business. This is a new product. And the tomahawks they produced last year were great. Either way, is being given to another RUclipsr friend. It isn't replacing Jess-X by any stretch of the imagination.
Love your reviews although I restore axes and have a wide selection the cold steel Hawks are great but only when there modded I'm on my 4th Keep the reviews coming
I know this is off topic but I just wanted to drop a line I received my jessica x two hours ago and it's not like seeing it on a video I been out for two hours and I love it! he'll the thing chops and it's so comfortable and the handle man u will never use it look everyone's got an opinion and Mr tanner you made a awesome knife bk9 got bumped to 2nd place lol you made a awesome knife Chris and this knife in a higher grade steel for 300? I'd buy it
I've used the bk 9 and it's not the jess x I love the bk9 it's one of the best I took the jess x out for two hours and the chopping ability with the handle is unreal the handle swoop at the end is awesome you will never lose it for sure no its not the same as a bk9 .....not in my opinion not many knifes really impress me but I said that looking at this knife on video and having it in your hand is quite different iam very impressed with it and anyone who's not can't know how to use it properly lol just my opinion
It looks to like I will stick with my Chogan and my grand dad's hatchet that has to be over a hundred years old now never let's me down . the bite with the chogan makes that axe look like a club very odd bounce with that axe.
I'm with you Chris ....much rather use a big blade, I hate that people can't see that a good big blade can actually work better and also be much safer in the field. An axe always feels out of control, its the deflection thing that bothers me the most, the small edge leaves very little room for error. I've seen many more axe-cidents with hatchets than knives, but we all know everyone has an opinion and their own likes.
Looks nice.... but the Price.... I have a WWII surplus hatchet that I have been using for over 50 years. I paid 50 cents for it back in thd day and it came razor sharp and painted green with a canvas cover. It is no longer green, now has a leather cover and I have gone thru many handles, but it is otherwise as functional as new. I am not sure why things have to cost so much these days..... just saying.... BTW - that was a great review with good tips on how to correctly use a hatchet. Thanks!
Lol is funny so many people say an axe is better I think you could take jessica x and do more than with a hachet or axe the only thing I've ever used an axe for is one I had made with a wedge for splitting large blocks that can't be burned without splitting but one of the tomahawks would be fun to play with
If anything, they'll just pour more resources into it. After all...WTF does a gun company know about making knives? About as much as Schrade does about making guns.
Taylor Brands, the parent company for Schrade, has made the Smith and Wesson knives, etc. for years under license. Smith and Wesson doesn't actually make those. I'm guess that existing relationship was part of the reason S&W decided to buy Taylor Brands. Honestly, the old (pre Taylor) Schrades were awesome knives, IMO. For a daily carry, three blade pocket knife, for instance, I liked them better than Case, etc. and I also really liked their 'Sharpfinger' small sheath knife. Then Taylor Brands bought the name and quality tanked for a little while. The last, few years however the Taylor Schrades and related brands seem to have improved a lot.
I own the Marbles Camp Axe. Great value and great Axe. Thanks for the video. Good work as always. And yeah... Expresso stood out to me also haha it's all good. We knew what you meant ;)
when i first saw this axe a few months ago i thought it was larger than it actually is. im the same way, i don't carry an axe or hatchet, i have Jess X for that.
I have both. Jess X is great no doubt but you saw how quickly Chris was splitting that wood with ease and someone who doesn't usually use a hatchet to boot. If I want to get the job done quick, there are things an axe will handle more efficiently. Just like there are things Jess will be superior in over an axe.
I think you need to have a talk with your friends over at going gear. I was in their store last month and they did not have a Jessica x. plenty of KaBar stuff but no Tanner stuff. it pissed off my wife. she secretly wants that knife more than I do.
Awesome review not a fan of the CRKT range but even in the their knives needs to be more reviews about their range. Their brand is like the Gerber brand... No offence to any of the brands but just not that into them. Great video as always.
@@Erebus.666. I have no idea.... i last saw this is in 2016 and I'm prepared to admit to being an axe-newb and know-nothing anyway! I trust your impression more than mine. I don't even remember mine.
the head is very thick, looks like a good splitting hatchet. as for cutting it won't be that good. i tend to use my axes/hatchets more for cutting than splitting. so this one is not for me. thanks for the review tho.
Eye protection is needed. I don't want to sound like a nit picker, but please protect your eyes when chopping wood. I really like the design of the hatchet as it allows your hand to get so close to your work for smaller, detailed work, as Will showed. That alone will cause me to buy this particular hatchet. I also like the mod's Chris made to the handle. It looks much better now.
That is a short AXE, not a hatchet. Look at the narrow blade. That's for removing chunks of wood, not splitting firewood (but it'll do it, just not as well as a hatchet).

CRKT OFFICIAL should sell the sheath with it wtf
My butler hatchet is terrible. I used it one time and the the head is now loose from the handle. It doesn't hold and edge. One of my worst purchases.

I have one and bought the mask later,GREAT PACK AX/HATCHET. May want to sharpen it some ,I did mine and have no issue going thru anything I chop

How does it handle throwing? Could it be used like a tomahawk?
Colt Scott it's an axe, not a tomahawk
I wonder how this little ax compare with Chogan Tomahawk ?
that axe is based off a viking bearded axe and they were short for battle purposes

It would cost 8,something dollars with today's inflation, just for fun info
You can buy axes for 8 dollars today or less today.
