- My journey to germinate and grow from seed - mimetes, leucospermum, banksia.... this is a 1 year update on how the plants are doing and what I have learned about growing them in larger pots. Also, what is the best potting mix.

thank you for straightening me out on that... you only needed the permit on the seeds... Must say, great job on the extremely informative videos. I really appreciate it. The Osmocote has been ordered! And from what I have been reading, theres tons of varieties of Osmocote. But the one you recommend is "Native Gardens" by Scotts brand. 17.9-0.8-7.3. Most of the others have a really high middle number. You also mentioned, Proteas do not like phosphorous. This was very helpful in my case, because I was feeding mine with miracle grow!! hahaha thanks again.

Grow Proteas, you've done an excellent job at growing these proteas. My gorgeous King Proea, a small plant as well as the tap-root, arrived from Portugal to England in time for my birthday. (A present to myself). I've been wondering how to pot him up, I've some seaweed feed already... Thank you for sharing :))) Faith Chi xo
Great info, need to put some soil mix together and up pot Protea. They are starting to struggle.
Great job on all your plants! Your Mimetes and everything else look so happy and healthy. I will try the kelp and blood meal fertilizers for Proteaceae. The plant that turns super yellow here is Grevillea 'Superb'. My potting mix is sand/peat/pumice, because here with extremely strong wind storms a very heavy potting mix keeps the pots from blowing over.
I can relate to the compelling attraction to proteaceae plants, I've literally run out of room, I have Macadamia, telopea, banksia and protea, most in pots. good to see these young plants doing well.

Hello! Watching your videos as I recently acquired a Banksia pod, quite a large one. It has 29 "clams" on it, 2 of which are open, and I'm assuming the other 27 have seeds! I'm hoping to extract the seeds and germinate them! Thanks for your awesome videos. Will inquire if I hit any walls, Thanks.

Lovely plants and great video. My naughty dog ripped a couple of stems off my mimetes today, and I wondered if I can replant a cutting that has some new buds on it? Could that work? (Novice gardener here).
Pretty hard to do with mimetes...
...also I'm growing my Protea's in pots. There both about 3 feet tall. What is the purpose behind putting pine needles around the base of the plant?? Looks pretty cool..
Putting some mulch on top of the pot will keep the roots cool - and will add nutrients - pine needles are acidic as well as fur bark... it also help when you water to not disturb the roots near the surface
Any Banksia updates? Oh and I'm really curious about the Hakea Victoriae! My dad lives in Sac so I'm thinking someday I might plant some of these in his yard. Keep up the good work!

HOW do I extract the seeds from a live Banksia flower??? I do not want to put it inot fire, but does it need to be dried out?

You seem to spend a whole lot on different products. I would like to know if you have found a good way to grow proteas that doesn't involve so much spending. I live near San Diego and you mentioned it but I don't know if that's where you live. Your videos show how passionate you are about these plants. Would love get advice from you. I've just bought a couple of proteas but I have absolutely no experience. Also, if you in fact live in S.D. , I would like to know if you sell seedlings or established cuttings of the proteas which are harder to find. Thank you.
There are many places in SD that sell proteas - most nurseries - you are in the best place in the USA to grow proteas! You are so lucky. I am in Sacramento which is hotter than the plants like. Iron sulfate is the best amendment for proteas in pots or the ground.

Thank you very much-very informative. May I ask your water schedule? I have some small (2-3") p. Cynaroides and I can;t figure out if I am over- or under-watering. Using your soil mix BTW. I, ve read they like a lot of water in order to maintain a acidic pH? Thank you in advance :)
Hard to answer as it depends where you live. Humidity.. etc - But here in Northern CA - if it's over 100 I water daily, between 90-100 every 2 days, and less than 90 might be every 3-5 days.
@@growproteas1148 Apologies-I am in Santa Cruz-not too far away. I have read that the p. Cynaroides is indigenous to a Mediterranean climate in S. Africa, with rainy winters/hot summers.

The p. Neriifolia has not done well for me, and p. Grandiceps is a tough one, but I am not a guru like you-yet! My initial soil was incorrect, but even the p. Cynaroides did well in that believe it or not.! I may go to the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum soon and take notes from their Protean curator. Thank you much and keep up the good work. P.S. I can mail you 10 seeds of the p. Cynaroides if you like. Just got a 100 from Silverhill.

.....well here the latest the Osmocote. I found it and ordered it over eBay and they just cancelled my order, because "this item is prohibited by USA customs... :( any suggestions??
I searched my records and found where i bought it in Australia - company called - turfmate - kylie McFarlane sold it to me - email is: kylie@turfmate.com.au I don't know if he still works there but this is a start...
How big should the drain wholes be in a large pot? Quarter size?

How do the proteas respond to the heat in the summer? Do you take any measures to deal with the tempatures where you live?
James Lyons . They do fine with dry heat. We will have an occasional week with temperatures of 105 to 108. Average temperatures in the 90s. All the plants seem to thrive.

Proteas love heat and dry wind. The more exposed they are the better.

Have you used coco coir instead of peat moss? Do you see any problems with using coco coir in pots?
peat moss is better because it is acidic and all proteas love acidic conditions - coco coir should work but I've never tried it.

having a really hard time finding this Osmocote, yes indeed it comes from Australia. How did you get the hardware store to US mail it to you?? Didn't I see some where you need a permit to get it? You can also buy it on eBay but if i do will it get stuck in customs?? don't want to go though the hassle of getting a permit
no permits needed - they just shipped it - came pretty fast
