- Here is a quick video where I remove and replace a bent prop shaft. But equally one could change the Gear or Propeller at the same time.
It takes less than 5 minutes all in. I explain what tools and parts you need and then talk through step-by-step how to perform the removal and then the new part instal.
If the flight of your AR Drone is Wobbly or Unstable - You may have a bent shaft.
If your videos are fuzzy or suffer from vibration - Again - you may have a bent shaft.
Geat video ! I was trying to figure out how to replace the shafts as I've got the same probem with my drone too..
I bent a shaft and repaired it by squeezing it straight again with pliers. Make sure you use a piece of cardboard or something so the pliers don't mark or dent the shaft. Great video though of replacing one!
Cheers Tom. I sussed it out eventually and yes it is broken but not all the way through. I managed to gently prize the broken joint open without making it any worse and this allowed me to get some Araldite into it and a good blob around the joint.... its now sat with elastic bands keeping it all in position. Ill just have to see how it holds out.
Happened the other day when it just cut out for no apparent reason and dropped about 15-20 feet onto gravel.
I am glad you Liked it & found it useful.
Yes & Yes. If the clip is not damaged & will still 'keep closed'. If the shaft is still straight.
(Some people straighten any bent shafts using a vice or hammer blows.)
That explains why I couldn't see them! Thank you for the update :)
I will keep that tip in mind.. The way I somehow seem to crash into every tree trunk means it will not be long before I bend one! ...and thank you for your feedback.
Changing or straightening those pins is the main repair that you have to do.
If you are 'new' to flying - try to fly over grass to start with. Hardly any damage when you crash land onto grass...
I haven't straightened any myself as yet - but would expect it will need a solid metal flat base plate. Hang the pin so that the head is over the edge and then with a small hammer, tap the shaft as you keep rolling it. Once the 'rolling' feels smooth and you do not have any 'wobble' when rolling in a circle around the pin head, that should be straight.
Thank you for your feedback. Glad you liked it. I have made many others as I have needed to and cover some of the major repairs in those.
If you mean the gear that is attached to the motors. That is because I have not had a motor or motor cog issue. + Those little cogs are not really replaceable, Parrot current stance is that if you need to change those, you need to buy a new motor..
Happy repair!
If you mean the cross-piece. Yes. I have a video series that shows you all the steps.
However if you mean just the central cross section that the four shafts go into... I am not sure. (a) not seen that available on its own. (b) the shafts are glued in really well!.
Maybe you need to use a Epoxy resin fixer / glue ??
Great news! There is no real 'special' reset that needs to be done.
I will always 'Calibrate' my drone before I fly - but that is more about detecting the WiFi signal direction more than the mechanics, however. You do watch the drone hover and then make a clean 360 degree spin...
Regarding the 'Drone drop' - You are not the first to experience this. You need to check what version of firmware you have. Some of the older ones are better than some. The VERY latest (Came out only 10 days ago) seems to be getting good reports. Worth joining the Parrot AR.Drone web site. Good forum and a lot of support available there.
Good to hear you got inside ok - Here's hoping that the Araldite works.
Thanks very helpful
Glad it helped. and thank you for your feedback :)
Ill leave it 24 hrs.....im a big believer in Araldite.....we shall see, ill let you know.
Im a member of the forum as well. Ill check the firmware when I get it up and running.
Yes, I meant the gear attached to the motor. Yesterday I received a gear kit to fix my drone. There were 4 motor gears in the kit. I think it is always better to change the motor and the propeller gear. If the motor gear has only a tiny damage, it may make noise, or wear out the new rotor gear too early.
Sounds interesting. Where did you get the 4 motor gears from ??
BTW - If you are concerned over wear - then consider replacing the bushings for bearings.. Makes a big difference.
It is better to change or straighten the shaft pins rather than let the motor take the strain and your AR Drone fly all over the place.
I have bought a total of 2 x 4 shafts and do straighten those that I can with pliers and a hammer.
I use a 60Beat controller now and crash far far less!
I got the kit from parrot dot com shop. They were not shown on the image of the kit, but they were in there.
The same thing happened to me!
If a leg or Crossbeam wobbles or now rocks - it is probably broken.
To look, you have to rip off the bottom stuck-on cover (around the camera). Then you have to remove the main circuit boards. This can be fiddly and needs you to remove connectors and do this in stages.
I am in the process of replacing my broken Cross-Beam and will have a detailed video for this later tonight. Give me 24 hours and I will have video/s that show you what you need to do / see / check.
I fixed it and made a video tomorrow I will fly outside. Did you reset the drone or recalibrate it after you replaced the shaft I did not and it seemed fine indoors
Thanks :)
Great video, but you didn't show how to replace the small motor gear.
i just bent the shaft also. did you ever figure out how to straighten the shaft yet
That is a pity. (I have only had one pin actually snap up to now.)
Most will straighten with pliers or gentle hammering.
Will be very interested to know if that works. My shaft replacement is all due to a 'split' down the seams of the main cross brace. Looks like a manufacturers fault to me.
I will post a link to this video when it is finished (doing it now) and has uploaded..
Let us all know if your repair works and it flys again.
Just tried to bend one back. It snapped lol. Quick flight before work in carpark breeze took it heading over wall i hit cutout must landed hard on one side on concrete didnt see went behind i bush. Gutted four days no fly now till new parts come :(
Great video, but how do you replace the tiny gear that spins the big gear???
Motors removed and then re-installed in this repair segment:
ruclips.net/video/b19laOlDync/видео.html
From circa 04:00 onwards.
You can not remove the drive gear from the motor. The plastic cogs are sacrificial. The plastic gears strip so the metal teeth are not.
can I also use the old clip and shaft?
can I also use the old clip und "metal-stick"
hello tom , thanks for the videos on the parrot , { yes , just like all the great new pilots here } great flight and take off ! just things get in the way ! hahahha ... bent shaft forward rotor ...
Glad you are finding my video(s) helpful. Happy flying!
Is it possible to replace the part that holds the shaft, mine has become a bit to wide...
How many times to needed to do this? I got mine now 2 days And I crashed it >< Same as you the shaft is been bent. Replacement parts are arriving this week. :)
awesome video man nice job
KevinMillard68 glad it helped you get your AR Drone flying !
Tom Strong Reviews :)
How would I get itno the drone to check the crossbeam? one of the legs feels less rigid than the other 3. I cant find anything about this for the 2.0.
tia
What's the diameter of the shaft an the length
Sorry, I do not know. however they are so cheap and readily available.

What to do if there is no mounting kit to remove the c clip ? Mine shaft bent so I ordered new ones but I couldn't found mounting kit in stocks
+Teknolojik Tencere if you do not have a C clip removal tool, you can still remove then C clips with small pin nose pliers. Just means that you are more likely to twist or damage the C clip. But that does not matter as you get more with the shafts.
Be careful pushing them on. That can be done with the flat of a screwdriver head. Hope that helps! (But always better to have to right tools)
+Tom Strong Reviews eye thought that scissors would ve okay but may give damage dont worry i have 8 cclips
+Teknolojik Tencere Mind you do not hurt yourself!
(Scissors are far far away from being the right tool for this job)
Hey can you help me out?
I bent the shafts to the point I can't push them out. One of them are so bent I can not even push a part of it out, so I can't try to cut the shafts in half. What do I do?
Goldname1 Wow. that is bent! I would first use pliers to straighten the bent shafts so I could remove them. If that does not work. Try and find a flat metal surface (top of a vice etc) and align the drone and pin such that you can tap the pin with a hammer.
If that fails... The metal surrounds above and below the pins are bushings and can be popped out. One up and one down. You may then find you can slide the bottom bushing off the pin shaft gives you enough wiggle room to remove the pin shafts (with the top bushing still attached)
You will be able to pop the two bushing rings back in afterwards..
Good luck!
Tom Strong Reviews Thanks. I straightened it out at first a little with pliers but I still couldn't push out. Then I just hit the thing out with a hammer and miraculously didn't break anything.
Goldname1 Good job and good to know.
Agggg I just got my parrot just yesterday and was flying it and it got to steep and stalled
Mac Pavia That is bad news. I hope you can repair any damage.
