- Shepherd's pie is a traditional dish of British cuisine. It is a potato casserole with minced meat (previously minced meat). It is complemented with Worcestershire sauce and rosemary.
Initially, it was a dish of the poor and was called "cottage pie" from the English word cottage, meaning a modest house of rural residents. This pie was made from leftover fried meat and a large amount of potatoes.
The term "shepherd's pie" was finally established in the XX century. Previously, only chopped meat was used in this dish, but now it is most often cooked with minced meat.
Shepherd's pie can be called an integral part of English everyday life, so it is quite common in popular British literature, for example in the series of books about Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter.
