World War II vets are no longer with us anymore and I think a lot of you, just like myself watch movies like these to keep the memories alive of our fathers and grandfathers and I think it's our way by watching these movies we pay tribute to them and in doing so, we will never forget, I know I won't and may the hand of God be with all of them and their families forever!
My dad was 101 st airborne... I would visit him on sat morning we would watch world at war an he would tell me his venture being dropped behind the lines in Normandy hoping to see the floatila coming over the horizon.... The world's greatest generation

I work at the Veterans Administration Hospice Care in Perry Point Maryland and we have a 100-year-old black World War II veteran who is still alive and kicking. He served in the invasion Force with a black artillery unit. His name is Mr Kearney. If you're ever in the area you would love for you to stop by and chat with him.

I met a P-47 D pilot who lived in Lexington KY, Jerome (Jerry) Wurmser a number of years ago. His daughter worked at the same A&E firm I was employed with. I visited with him several times and he told me of his time in southern France in 1944. These color films were actual combat missions of the two groups I knew about and I had no idea that someone built a movie around those films. Incredible work putting the two together.

I was sadly half asleep watching this one today, and woke up a little when they got to the climactic scene... I noticed a red cross on the hat of one of the pilots of the P-47s right after he launched his flare to alert them- and I remembered where I had seen it- In the movie "THUNDERBOLT!", which was a documentary filmed with the P-47 squadrons in Corsica, one of the pilots, I think it was the commander, wore his girlfriends nurse's cap for good luck! And I realized that shot was from the other movie, or someone had been on the ball and added it to wardrobe for this one...
That sounds really interesting! Makes me want to see this movie.
VERY GOOD WAR MOVIE, IN ITALY, STERLING HAYDEN, VERY GOOD ACTOR, J. CARROL NAISH TO. AND THE BEAUTIFUL JOY PAGE.
Everything Sterling Hayden did was good. He might not have been as famous as John Wayne but he was every bit the man and a real honest to God military hero.
This was a great watch for Memorial Day weekend, thanks for sharing! I think it is my first Sterling Hayden film!

Sterling Hayden (AKA John Hamilton) was an impressive individual 👍.
If you know his nomme de guerre, you probably know his history. He infiltrated into Yugoslavia for the OSS and set up a network to retrieve downed US fliers. Ironic subject for a film.
And was a card carrying member of the Communist Party, so he would have fit in pretty well working in Tito’s Yugoslavia….
I've never flown anything. There is something about the sound of those engines starting up that stirs my heart. I can only imagine how it makes a flier feel.
Its amazing! The freedom you experience up there is breathtaking.

My dad was a mechanic on the Republic P-47 razer backs in the European front. This help make alive the stories he told me. Thank you for posting.

I have been a WW2 enthusiast since I can remember. In Peru, South America, where my mother is from, she once saw a German Captain trying to negotiate a port for the base of his UBoats. She imagined a secret place to hide such subs after raiding Allied cargo. Luckily the government was pro-United States and denied such a request. There was the expected give and take between Hitler's naval command and the Congress of Peru. But in the end, the Germans relented. This happened in Tumbes Town where my mom grew. After listening to such an account I grew interested in the conflict that involved the whole world. I watched movies, collected books, and listened to recorded books about the Pacific and European theater.
I honor the memory of those valiant men and women who served to thwart the menace of a crazed demagog. Their just sacrifice must never be forgotten!
I met Sterling Hayden in Sausalito California back in the late 70's, by then he pretty much stayed a recluse. He was an interesting character then, you wouldn't recognize him either if you saw him. He had a straggly beard and was showing his age by then.. He was one of the leading actors in the 50's and early 60's.
I assume it was a nice meeting. Congratulations - I wish I could have met him too.
Great movie... My paternal grandparents were from Potenza, Italy, to the east of Naples, and came to the US before the outbreak of WW1.. I have visited Italy eight times, working there once in Bologna. As I write this my daughter, now fluent in Italian, is doing graduate study in Siena Italy. The value of the partisans in all of occupied Europe during WWII cannot be understated. Italy for my family is special, as is Britain, Ireland and Lithuania, and also Mexico, where my wife is from.
Our common roots and ancestry bind us all together. Remembering that, even though war still goes on today, will give us small measures of peace when times are dark, and light in darkness. Wars end, times change, but the value of history in the old world and new is so important. Even the enemy soldiers from Germany, many conscripts, celebrate the D-Day festivities with their former enemies.
WW2 veterans are dwindling as they age and pass on their memories from one generation to the next. We must never forget their sacrifice in liberating the occupied countries from darkness, or the German soldiers who helped at the end of the war find those who were war criminals. One was Colonel von Lindeiner who was commandant of Stalag Luft III (Sagan) in WW2. He was appalled at the execution of 50 of the prisoners who were part of the "Great Escape" and court martial-ed for showing empathy for the prisoners under his command, but survived the war. He doubtless saved lives doing his best to keep allied POW's safe.

I'm sort of a historian of WW2, and prior. I've read all about the actions to the start of such, political and military.
I've read of the atrocities of the German occupation forces upon the peoples of Europe. Something that will never rest with the people who've experienced such.
My question,....How could such a intelligent group of people visit horrors upon their fellow man? How could they look at themselves in the mirror and profess they were a kind and compassionate beings?
How could they justify their horrific actions?
And still deny their complicity to such?
To this day? I look at the Germans with suspicion, the Japanese, the Russians, the Chinese. Yes all of the above. I feel that their atrocities from their collective past against their peoples, will surface again. And those previous actions will dictate the future of a more efficient genocide towards the innocents of this world.
Oh yes......
This is why history is so important. This is why we must teach our children to pay attention to our collective past.
A tough job to accomplish, but something that has to be instilled into the young minds of the future.
We cannot continue this depleting of other human beings. Otherwise?...We're done as a peoples of the world. The dogs will feast on our flesh......And they too will perish for lack of food.
Not a doomsday person here.....But History has a nasty way of keeping us real.
The ones that heed such? May survive....Just.

American pilot who escaped with parachute and an Italian girl who was a partisan and helped him .
The USAF was only 5 years old when this movie was made....boy, we've come a long way baby...
I feel a lot better after seeing this movie....don't know why people nowadays need to watch a feel-good movie....just watch one of those old war movies and you'll end up feeling a lot better!

What a surprisingly good movie.
Well, thank goodness for fast-forward! My father loved war movies but knew it was going to be a stinker if there was a woman in it. Something to do with going through two wars and never seeing a woman in the field.
The part when George says something about the Combat Infantry Badge brought a smile to my face as I have a CIB.
Kenneth Tobey was a gunner on B-25's in the war. He usually played military officers (air force) in many, many movies. Wiki.
Quite an accomplishment
We were never issued Combat Tanker Badges . It was proposed after Desert Storm but went no where. Since my grandfather earned the German tanker badge in the Heer I would slip on a denazified 1957 version time to time till some butter bar would order me to remove it
So what. Cops get them weekly.

I'm torn between the razorbacks and bubble canopied models. Though when I drew airplanes and spaceships I always had framed greenhouses, LOL.

Also loved Sterling Haydens Flat Top. Fighter Squadron is also a superb air combat movie. Huge respects from India 🇮🇳 to Thunderbolt n P51 Mustang Fighter pilots during WWII. They were heroes.
I noticed some footage from Fighter Squadron. A bunch of P-47s from various National Guard units. They all have different squadron markings :)
You should look up "WitchCraft" the restored B-24 formerly a member of the Indian Air Force.
Great to see a movie that the actor who is one of my favorite of all and that he was able star in one of his actual reL life jobs in world War two Sterling Hayden was an American special intelligence office how help and organized partinzens in Yugoslavia to hit and disrupt Germans in real life and was decorated. It's great to see him get to act out what he did during the war.
Sterling Hayden is a true American patriot, but sad to know in his last years of his life he became hook on hash I guess thr war nightmares became to great for him but he did leave us with great movies and books on his hobby of sailing boats, thanks for posting this movie now it's complete to see him actually act out what he really did during the war for he entered after leaving Hollywood to serve our country America the beautiful then came back to Hollywood and pick up making movies. Sterling Hayden I salute you for fighting for American freedoms for all Americans.😊

First of all, thank you so much for posting this movie. I love Sterling Hayden! It would be his 105th birthday on March 26 and today, March 29, is my birthday, so I took this movie as a present. Thank you so much! Whenever I see a picture like this, I wonder what should have passed through his mind, all the memories he had from WWII in Europe, places and people. I wish I could have known Mr. Hayden - I admire the actor and even more the writer - his two books are amazing (and Lee Mandel´s "Sterling Hayden´s Wars" is great too!). Sailor, actor, writer... I think he was very ahead of his time. Greetings!

Sterling is the man came out of retirement to do Dr strange Love . He must have laughed his ass off during breaks making that movie . Stanley Kubrick wanted to make a serious movie at first but it overwhelmed him and he turned it into a comedy .

Sterling Hayden played in many movies and one in particular that I enjoyed was, "Dr. Strangelove." He was great

57FG, 65FS P-47's in the beginning.
HunHunter. A man I knew in 1990's in Santa Rosa, CA was a pilot in this squadron. One, if not the oldest.
Ed Ellington. They called him "Duke". He had been CO of the 65FS for a while towards latter part of the war in Europe. I flew with him once in his Cessna 150 airplane. Low and broken cloud ceiling, raining in parts. Up about 700' or so for quite a while. Being a pilot myself I knew it was nuts to be out flying VFR in that kind of weather. Ed wasn't fazed at all.
Awesome story. "Duke" was apparently one of those 'seat of the 'pants' flyers for whom the aircraft was an extension of himself. A rare breed who fly by instinct.

@@allegra0 Selkers played 3 characters in addition to Dr. Strangelove- the President, and CaptMandrake. Sellers wanted to play a 4th part- Slim Picken's Major T.J (King) Kong, but the director , Stanley Kubrick said 3 was enough.
J. Carrol Naish's last role was Sam the gangster on an episode of GET SMART. He played the part of a dying gangster, and in fact, he was in the throes of emphysema and died the next year.

Joy Page as Nina, a little bit older, was very good in this movie. I remember a young Joy Page as Anina in the film Casablanca. Sterling Hayden is one my favorite actors, he did well in "Suddenly" along with Frank Sinatra. They both performed wonderfully. That's a great way to entertain their audience. Thanks Rob W!

The two airplanes in the background at 12:45 are Vultee BT-13s. Being trainers, they would not have been painted olive drab. My father owned one of these gems in the late 50s / early 60s. First airplane I ever flew in. (about age 5)

Its ironic that when they made these movies there was tons of leftover planes, ships tanks and what not that it was probably pretty easy to put together. Today if it wasn't for CG they couldn't even begin to make them. Having a lot of actual combat footage makes them even better.

Its the complete opposite for German and Japanese vehicles. Since we won the war, its a simple conclusion that we destroyed most of them in combat, and the few that were left over were usually trashed to stop them getting used against us. From using allied cruisers as the Graf Spee, Yamato, and Bismarck, to the myriad of films featuring 'Tiger' tanks that actually used T34s and Pattons (only 2 films have every used real running Tiger tanks, the well known 'Fury' and a little known British film from a few years after the war), film makers have always had to improvise when it comes to Axis war machines.
I suppose that is a HUGE advantage of this film, since you never see any German planes, they never had to improvise because, as you say, *Allied* planes were plentiful at that time.....

Hayden's acting often left much to be appreciated, but in this film he seemed at ease. Why? He was OSS in the war.

My father in LAW was a maintence officer on Corsica with P-47s
I was set up selling at a huge flea market in Canton, Texas one weekend. I had three Time-Life war books. A middle aged, maybe lil older man picked one up and started looking at it. I was busy, so it was a little bit before I said anything. When I did, I asked if he was in the war. When he said yes, I saw tears in his eyes.
The book was about the Italian war. He was Italian. I didn't ask anymore questions. I gsve him the book.
My Dad fought in the push back of the Battle of the Bulge. They made him MP in Berlin. At times, I think we fought the wrong enemy.

Sterling Hayden was a real life bad ass during WW2. He was in the OSS (the precursor to the CIA) and was awarded the Silver Star among other medals. Look for him in the God Father & Dr. Strangelove.

So they used all footage parts from "Thunderbolt!" (filmed in Corsica and only released in 1947) by William Wyller...
And added some Corsairs along with the P-47s?

I was going to say all that. Thunderbolt was a very good film, very well done.
One of the P-47s in the still clip has been reproduced in the form of a restored one called “Hun Hunter”
The footage actually comes from a 1945 documentary called Thunderbolt which was made in part by mounting movie cameras in P-47`s based out of Corsica during 1944. Worth looking up if you can find it for the authentic combat sequences.

The FAB (Força Aérea Brasileira) Brazilian Air Force fight with a Squadron of Republic P-47 planes in Italy. The pilots, after training in U.S.A., went to Italy to fly missions against trains, amunnition depot, targets. This happen after the invasion of Sicily. I think this american mission are before the invasion, from Corsica island. Also 25.000 soldiers of the Brazilian Army fight beside under the command of Fifth 5th Army Corps from U.S.A in the central area of Italy. We lost 425 men.
