The biggest flaw is the stealth seemingly interrupting the skill queue. If you press the 5 and the skill you want to empower too fast, it just doesn't execute it. Instead you stand there in stealth doing absolutely nothing. Instead you have to use the 5, WAIT, and then use the skill. Sure, I can get used to that, but the number of times I've found myself just standing there in stealth doing nothing with the skill icon I wanted to use and pressed unused and flipped is infuriating.
As a thief-main who is used to my own auto-attack somehow interrupting my own stealth without using the ambush - I find that just mashing the key you want to cast works pretty well instead of waiting. 🤷♂
Was trying to learn spear deadeye as a thief noob, the whole stealth getting wonky with queue, autoattacks, and quickness is crazy to me. How have you all been dealing with this for years???
I have a similar issue with the ele spear etchings. Often times the skill flip to the empowered version interrupts itself and you end up wasting time waiting for the icon to "activate".
Reminds me of my Berserker's Signet of Precision into Berserk only to cast my F1 without getting into Berserk. Sometimes GW2 queues up so much for you and sometimes it doesn't. I hate it.
For me, this weapon is meant to be a power weapon with a lot of utility. You can be in stealth a good amount of time, and that is pretty amazing if your build has a good amount of toughness amd you're targeted most of the time because the mobs usually trade their target for a brief time and you have free opportunity to burst. So, I can see this weapon not as the strongest, but a more versatile approach to encounters, especially if the mobs are not stationary, as it gives us ranged/melee mix, stealth, stun etc. For me, maybe it's the most fun weapon atm.
I've been running it on quickness untamed with hammer for the most part of JW and then recently switching hammer to mace/mace. I've liked how it's felt. The controlled mobility of the 4 and the stealth combined with dual mace makes for a pretty resilient setup. Here are some numbers I've pulled from golem testing with snowcrow's power untamed build and all buffs and food, no utility First with only the auto attack + a single skill to see how much that skill actually brought. I only tested for the first 20%, so the fourth skill would be more worthwhile under 50% Spear Auto Attack - 19.0k dps Second skill/Empowered - 20.1k/21.7k Third/Empowered - 20.5k/19.0k (Probably a drop because in my situation, unempowered was 3000 damage + 20% where empowered was 4090. The stealthing animation wasn't enough to offset only 400 extra damage) Fourth/Empowered - 19.0k/19.6k With proper rotations Hammer/Spear - 38.6k@21 seconds, 34.8k@113 Hammer/Sword+Axe - 40.0k@20 seconds, 36.0k@110 Fun thing is the empowered wolf's onslaught makes up the largest percent of damage in the hammer/spear rotation @14.2%. The next highest was unleashed savage shockwave @9.1% which also gets the highest in the hammer/S+A rotation @9.1%
I've been testing it out too, although purely in pve. It's kinda fun but definitely feels a bit too weak and janky. I've noticed the awkward pauses in between skills because of stealth immediately stopping my attack chain. Hopefully it gets a bit more refinement and a damage increase otherwise I can't see it being a great pick amongst all the other weapon options. 😢 I really like its aesthetic tho, so here's hoping.
yea i think that might be a issue with how stealth works ion general, cause i think it does the same for theif so ya dont accdentally wiff ya stealth skill normally if u do any attack it takes u out of stealth and there fore portnally messing up ya stealth skill, so it stops u attacking so u can use the stealth skill when u need it to how ever with ranger, thats not a issue as they can still use their empowered attacks even if they get revealed due to the hunters prowless buff when they use their panthers prowl skill how ever if they get stealth from other means such as the panther, it does NOT give u hunters prowelss buff so if u do a atto attack after using it, it will depower ya other skills so they could make it so if ya have the hunters prowelss buff it doesnt stop u from auto attacking but down side is that if u want to use the stealth to disengage or to drop agrro. which is one of the main benifits of stealth, it would prevent that from happening so i think they need to buff the empowered skills more to make up the lack of auto attacking if ya use the stealth skill
I was really betting on there being a stealth relic, a replacement for rune of the trapper if you will, on launch. Still quite possible for a quarterly update, or as a trait with a balance patch (maybe in Wilderness survival, bringing camouflage back). I also imagine a gimmick duo build with blood moon, lingering light, and celestial shadow in Druid, and Quick draw in skirmishing that is just daze and stealth spear spam, but relies on there being an ally to heal to reduce cooldown on cele avater for stealth.
Sooo I can't say this is particularly effective but I'll just explain the build I run and why I run it: Weapons - Hammer + dual maces (can maybe be replaces with spear now). Gear/stats - Carrion Skirmishing (2>3>1) - vigor on evasion + 33% bleed buff + faster skill recharge on weapon swap. Wilderness Survival (3>1>1) - +25% endurance recovery + vitality + expertise + protection + heal on dodge roll + condition damage + damage and healing on disables. Druid (3>3>3) - bleed on disables + damaging avatar abilities. The premise behind the build is to be hybrid damage and CC. By using alot of disables and embolizes you can apply alot of stacks of bleeding, and turn an otherwise non-condi weapon, into a decent/surprising hybrid weapon. with a good amount of survivability. With hammer and maces survivability comes from your disables and the built in defense that comes from those weapons. But with the spear you can keep your distance, and you still have a daze/leap, and a immobilize. It is worth noting though I play this mostly in PvP/WvW and open world. I have no idea if it's viable in PvE. But I imagine swapping the stats over to Vipers would make it atleast perform decently there too, again unsure if this works for spear really (likely not, but PvP it's been pretty good.
I've played quite a bit in WvW roaming, eventually settling on a power daze Druid build, since the stealth attacks have solid synergy with Celestial Shadow. It works....fine, I suppose? I wasn't really having a ton of trouble in 1v1s, and extra stealth does make disengaging easier, but I think I would still prefer maces or hammer. What I kept having problems with was how long the revealed is after using a stealth attack, and that you are revealed whether that attack lands or not. So for example, if I stealth and then try to use 4 to get away, I reveal myself for 3 seconds, which doesn't feel great.
Your PvP Build was good! Give yourself more credit lol 🤣 & it's good to have tradeoffs like the Block on Greatsword. -- I kind of whish you had tried PvE thief immediately before this. "You stealth yourself and stop your damage rotation briefly." - Welcome to Thief Life. ^^ | I'm just glad they seem to be reading feedback. I think the extended ambush-window buff is worth mentioning as well, & I do *really* hope they add the bonus ambush window that Ranger Spear got to Thief as well. (At least for PvE.) I'm unsure if they have the tech to do that split. But it makes invis/ambush rotations much more forgiving imo! 😄
I find it really strange that the flip skill also puts the regular version on cool down, yet every other flip skill for spears (and in general) does not do that. Hopefully they change that cause it feels clunky in it's current form
So I am an Untamed fan. Love untamed. To me, the spear was cool in pve. Loved the unleashed skill but it felt off. If you are full 900 range and you do the untamed burst, you miss the entire attack on the enemy. Wish they made it like the auto for if you are ranged the unleashed attack is ranged. Did most to all the content on that class for this expansion and enjoyed my time. I think you are right in it probably needs some number tweaking for the end game content but I did have fun.
It's good for roaming in wvw, and you can easily make it work for wvw zerging as well. You do melee clashes in wvw, the unblockable #3 is perfect for zergs, the net is good, the unleash for untamed is a 600 ranged wave which is good for zergs. The problem with damage ranger in wvw zergs is that you always have other classes with outliers in terms of damage. Currently those are holo, scrapper, core warrior with the new spear etc for pure damage roles. Ranger has never been at the top for damage in large wvw. I do have a good zerg build that could use spear as the second weapon, but it is not necessarily an upgrade from what we had. But at least it provide some sort of non-projectile ranged damage. Honestly, I would ditch the stealth attacks gimmick. Make 2, 3 and 4 have the stealth attack as the baseline skills and leave 5 as is. Ranger doesn't have any stealth attack interactions with traits like thief do. It is kinda pointless. The stealth itself is good because power rangers always used stealth to kite and survive in pvp and such.
in pvp i used it like an assassin soulbeast build, with the pet that gives stealth and/or evasion, I use it as a pop in an out annoyance with the staff to help enter / exit combat quickly, like a gnat
Obviously the key to spear is it's a melee weapon that can sustain damage at range, close again and control movement. Any success comes from leveraging that unique mix. If you can sustain into a burst off stealth into weapon swap burst maybe something there.
Open world player here. Spear is kinda ok with dealing trash mobs while roaming map for map completion, stealth helps to pass mobs without encounter. But for champs and meta events i will stick to mace/mace+hammer
I spent the week trying to figure something that would make the spear work in wvw roaming. Currently, my best attempt is a slight edit of the beast mastery/skirmish soulbeast, with spear/sword/WH. I use the spear to stall the cooldowns of the sword burst or to finish the job when it is not enough. I tried using it on a daze druid, but did not have enough damage to win most duels (it might be great in 5v5s or 10v10s, though)
I think it's a weapon that you use in addition to Greatsword or Longbow, not on its own. Easy to slot into a Greatsword/Spear or Mace/Spear rotation; if you're forced out of melee, you can camp Spear for a little while before you move back in. Easy to slot into Longbow/Spear rotation; if you're forced into close range, you camp spear so you're not stuck with relatively junky AAs because you don't meet the ranged requirement. Most of the damage is tied behind the Stealth charges which tells me "once you've used both those stealth charges, you should switch back to your other weapon". Of course, the execution here is up for debate; we'll see if they retune :)
i would say, power builds in pvp with spear and gs or sw/wh are actually quite decent. if you run staff, you are just lacking dps. in pve it's just not good enough and there was never even a need for another power weapon. especially one that feels clunky to use with slow animations and the stealth interaction
It felt anemic to me, too. The only real use I found for it is in small group roaming with Relic of the Unseen Invasion as a utility kit- with snares on both the auto and the web coupled with frequent stealth instances (and therefore AoE superspeed boosts) it can swing mobility in your favor pretty hard. Is it worth the reduced personal damage? M...ay...be? I'm not sure. If you've got a group that can really take advantage of it, probably, but that seems like kind of a thin edge case.
There's definitely room for improvement, but I do enjoy the versatility. I primarily play Power Untamed, and the spear does feel less potent than other options available; however, I think leaning into just using the spear and not worrying about weapon swapping should be what the goal of the weapon is. Right now, it's a little clunky and doesn't hit quite hard enough for that to work, but if they give it some PvE love, it could be a solid choice.
@@Pirokhwhat the heck? I'm actually kinda happy that the ranger didn't get an overpowered weapon this time. Playing with a weapon that's going to be nerfed is not fun at all.

@nilsscholze9651 because getting it to that point will take several patches and time to tune. Meanwhile it's obliterates pvp. From their POV it's better to nerf ot to dirt and save pvp and then gradually buff it back up to a healthy place after several patches.
Only running in PvE as Soulbeast, I swapped out my longbow for the spear. Kept my axe mace because it's the most damage. And I really tried spear since it came out, but honestly today I'm switching back to long bow. The spear is just not powerful enough.
I agree with this assessment, and I like the spear. I like the animations and the theme, but it doesn't "feel" great. The damage is not were it needs to be to be competitive with the other weapons, and the mechanics feel kinda akward. If the devs can get those things ironed out, it might become one of my favorite weapons.
Ranger Spear feels like the "Middle child". "Oh right, youre here too. Yeah here have one like your brothers and sisters" *gets old hand me down that kiiiinda still works*
I have been playing as power dps soulbeast for a while now, with a dual mace / dual axe build, and so far the damage has been consistent, but nothing too crazy (probably also because i partially use dragon stats instead of berserker. Yesterday i tested the same build, but swapping out dual axe for the spear, and to my surprise the damage was not that much lower. So i think i still have some work to do with my dual axe build, cause this can't be right. 😂
Roaming in wvw it feels pretty good, been having fun with it. Feels good dazing and immobilzing people, and having a "get the hell out of there" button with the stealth. Running relic of speed with it feels nice with the amount of swiftness you're giving yourself constantly. But thats about as far as this weapon goes in terms of usefulness for me, it just doesn't hold up against the other power weapons ranger has, in both pve and pvp. They'd have to buff it quite a lot to make it viable, OR give it a few damaging condis, and make it a hybrid weapon. 🤷🏽
Why use 5? So you can break agro or set up sneaking on enemies. Why use 3? To cripple running away enemies so you can catch up to them. That is if cripple actually worked on enemies, which they haven't since kryptis got in game. Spear Ranger PvE is for playing the fantasy of the profession I suppose.
Does it fit in somewhere with a condi Daze druid build? With the Daze on movement skill plus the net, pair it with shortbow for added dazes and then what like rock gazelle?
I really want to play Ranger because of the pet in OW. Maybe fractals and strikes. Is Greatsword and Bow still good for those modes? It would be my first character i go thru the story with.
Greatsword is good because it has an active block, engage ability with skill 3, a stun with five, that also resets your hardest hiting ability with 2. Also, it's pretty nice using this weapon with untamed because your unleashed ability is a spin with very nice damage. So, at least for me, is a nice weapon. Longbow has ok damage, with a nice burst windows, especially with soulbeast, but it's not very much versatile. Overall, ranger is one of the nicest professions when it comes to versatility and weapon design right now, as it has weapons for pretty much all roles, and the weapons are good.
When the spears were introduced so many ppl where crying about warrior spear, but this one here in my eyes is the biggest looser among all classes 😅 I‘d bet that this thing will get a complete re-design as other dead weapons got
Looked through all the spear skills on every profession. Feels kinda meh to me. Getting the whole "mesmer rifle feeling" all over again. Hope they work on the spears. Otherwise just a wasted option not being used >.
off-topic I hate how Ele spear 5 has no second/third tooltips for all three different attacks the spear 5 has on all four elements ... Either it is my settings or a bug. I just wanted to see all 12 tool tips without having to send them as messages. Send skill 5 send skill 234 send skill, next element...
Weak at everything, toolset only useful for lazy power soulbeast in pvp. Is it a revival tentative of the one burst combo Norn bear elite, but less efficient?
Hey muk great informative video as always pleasure to watch I think you where way to modest with ranger spear It’s pure crap and by far the worst weapon in this expac by far in any aspect from animation to execution
@@missk1697 Yet everything still not catered to your wants, SLB been lacking a PvP weapon since then, we have a massive array of weaponry for PvE but we are stucked with Swords in PvP for powerbuilds and SB for condi build.
How on earth can you say it was alright? It feels horible to play with. let along the invis skillcasting takes for kitting ages. +And then I have not even complained about dps.. simply bc you don't do any so nothing to complain about :'D The amount of condi's hitting is just insane, its almost as good a hammer or dual maces. Can you try ele spear next? I'm interested in your opinion about it.
Is spear guardian a good support?
Does it fit in somewhere with a condi Daze druid build? With the Daze on movement skill plus the net, pair it with shortbow for added dazes and then what like rock gazelle?
tbh it might be kinda cool for roaming in WvW on a celestial druid.
Seems my power Untamed will stick with Axes Or Lb for range and Hammer for melee.
1:30 Foam Pool Noodle, LOL
You do more spear vids you gotta use King from Seven Deadly Sins for a thumbnail, wielding his True Spirit Spear Chastiefol! 😜
When the spears were introduced so many ppl where crying about warrior spear, but this one here in my eyes is the biggest looser among all classes 😅
I‘d bet that this thing will get a complete re-design as other dead weapons got
Hey muk great informative video as always pleasure to watch
I think you where way to modest with ranger spear
It’s pure crap and by far the worst weapon in this expac by far in any aspect from animation to execution
In pve the weapon doesnt feels smoth at all. Thats my biggest issue with it.
Well, guess Im gonna wade through the pvp lobby again...
You happy now, Muk?
I dont really feel the need to use a spear and as someone who mainly plays ranger I am deeply saddened by this :(
Guardian Will Bender please :-)
So the weapon is pretty much useless in pve and wvw, and it's only really useful in the least popular game mode. Gz devs.
Still a game mode and a good amount of people still play it anyway, not everything is catered to your wants.
@@TheEightDomain "My wants" as in "wants of 90% of playerbase, if not more".
+And then I have not even complained about dps.. simply bc you don't do any so nothing to complain about :'D
The amount of condi's hitting is just insane, its almost as good a hammer or dual maces.
So yea again no condi weapon.
Comparing spear with any other power weapon... i would rather use singlehand dagger than use this abomination
Rangers should all equip a spear and then throw it as far away as possible and not touch it again.
