Im honestly extremely suprised it's taken this challenge this long to show up at a games done quick. Its incredibly awesome that a new audience gets to have exposure to such a momentus project 9 years after it first went viral. Its been a pleasure watching this challenge progress over the years and for anyone wants to see more, i highly recommend watching Bismuth's several part documentary on the topic
My instinct is to make a joke, but I know you've heard them all a million times already lol. Crazy it's been 9 years, I remember forcing my friends to watch that video in college and back then that was considered to be a movie in length by RUclips standards. I still occasionally tell my gf that I'm gonna misalign her QPU as a joking threat lol.
that would be a great addition and probably not difficult to implement genuinely you should send them feedback via email/socials or if they have a form
It's interesting that some of the stars chosen for this showcase are more recent developments which are not in Bismuth's 5 hour video on ABC History: 1. Watch For Rolling Rocks: used to be infamous "12 hours of building speed to Parallel Universes with 0.5xA press", then cut down to ~2 hours if I remember correctly, until the 0xA strats with that DDR pad was found. 2. Elevator Tour in the Volcano: used to be ~25 hours (!!) strat, now just ONE MINUTE! I didn't know of this improvement until now because the one minute strats is not posted in Uncommentated Pannen's channel, it's in Marbler's channel instead lol 3. Treasure of the Ocean Cave: used to be 1xA, now 0.5xA. 4. Go to Town for Red Coins: In Bismuth's video it was explained that initially it took ~14 hours to bring it from (8xA to 0xA (the biggest improvement, ever)). Then the overflow strats to bring it down to ~2 hours. Then, apparently, this one shown here is not included in Bismuth's video (I suppose because this star already 0xA, and the Elevator Tour star is more important to explain).
Indeed, all the TASes showcased here are quite recent developments; - for LLL Elevator Tour, the idea to use Hyperspeed Lava Boosting to get to the star without PU movement was actually thought of by ds273 before even the 25hr strat (ruclips.net/video/hghunpG1wYc/видео.html). Tyler Kehne had the idea of using the crusher platform for squish cancel instead of the elevator, and it was eventually Marbler who put everything together into an impressively fast TAS, made possible too by his idea of using the pole for speed redirection. The devil is in the details, as the execution of the strat is incredibly precise in a way that is difficult to convey without going into deep detail, which is why it took so long to be done. - for WDW Red Coins, it wasn't any new big tricks but rather a combination of very clever strats & outside-the-box thinking by Iwer Sonsch that allowed a new 14-min route (ruclips.net/video/QHqgy6EwBCA/видео.html , that video description has more details), and I believe it was pannen who figured out skeeter manipulation for it. And the next iteration over that, with some more clever and tricky optimizations let them get it down to 5min (ruclips.net/video/25G6qXpXwHw/видео.html); which Marbler was eventually able to optimize to under 4min for this showcase.
A lot of comments are saying "What's TAS" or "Nobody's Playing" so let me just leave it in a comment here instead of a reply TAS stands for "Tool-Assisted Speedrun". It's generally used to create the hypothetical "best" run where everything is done perfectly. It's created by using a program to make a series of inputs that are created by someone ahead of time going frame by frame and using savestates. The A-Button Challenge (ABC) in particular is FULL of tricks that are just too difficult for a human to do, as a lot of them require an absurdly precise series of inputs as well as access to information you wouldn't normally be able to see while playing the game. TLDR: TAS is a premade series of inputs created to make a "perfect run"
To add to this, the category specifically is an individual level (IL) showcase. The run as a whole isn't a category that anyone cares about (it's just getting 8 random stars that aren't themselves very fast), but ILs in particular are very popular and contested. Also the castle movement isn't really a part of the showcase, and that's why the a button is used in between levels. I think what's interesting about tas runs at live events is that you're actually watching world record runs, which (usually) can't be said for most of the event.
Man i remember watching tasbot plays brain training and not knowing what a tas is at all really, and honestly not believing what i was watching at all. But the little robot guy did help to get across the idea of what was going on.
It's like those old pianos that play themselves. I know. Some of you still live in the 1800's, and the concept of a piano playing itself sounds like insane black magic.
This comment made me have a dream of me attempting amazing emergency exit 1xA at gdq and failing the speed reactivation so many times in a row that the run was just aborted before the first star was collected
minimum times pressing the A button. the A button is pressed several times throughout the castle sections, the purpose of the run is to showcase certain levels with 0 a presses
also clarification on the half A press is that you can enter the level with the A button held so if you absolutely need to jump somewhere else you can chain levels with A held. basically half A press means either pressing and being able to hold the button or needing the button held.
calling it a half-press is to denote that in single-star segments it requires an a-press, but in the full game run you continue holding A from a previous press, and therefore it does not require an additional press. single-star segments just exist to show off, what actually matters is the full-game run
that was just a dive recover, done with the B button and performed after pretty much every dive in this run; it’s also the most height Mario can get on his own with no outside help. it looks like it’s going backwards here because Mario was on a slope, which gave him negative speed, but the dive recover still functioned like normal despite the negative speed. edit: nevermind i lied, that wasn’t technically a dive recover because Mario wasn’t in the dive action, he was in the backwards sliding action which shares the same animation. the recovery from this functions almost exactly the same as from a standard dive recover, though, and also can be done with the B button and doesn’t require A.
omg that coat is so snazzy she is ROCKIN it! edit: i swear i know what clothing looks like why did i have to edit this 3 times before i remembered what a coat is
In this video i will be explaining exactly what i do to collect watch for rolling rocks in 0 a presses, BUT FIRST we need to clear something out because its not 0.5 anymore
well of course the fastest way to the basement is clipping into the Vanish Cap level and then clipping through the wall, why did I expect any different?
Fantastic showcase! Onscreen controls and A button counter would have been nice. It's hard to understand what's going because a lot of movement looks like a jump to the untrained eye.
I've seen some other runs from this TAS runner, but I don't know, watching the cracked gameplay, I'm starting to suspect TAS is cheating on runs somehow.
The very start of the run is just setting some specific variables, which doesn't require following the rules of the rest of the challenge. Edit: Also pretty sure it is possible to set those variables in 0 A presses, but it might take a long time
They weren't doing a full game minimum A press challenge. They're just showing off certain levels A button challenge. So whenever they weren't in a level I'm pretty sure they just used the A button freely.
Also, the first showcase is opening the moat door from inside without lowering the water level (aka, the beginning of one key). This is not an abc strat, but exists thanks to the people and tech of the abc, so it is related somehow
whoever does the sound at GDQ really needs to do something about wet mouth sounds coming thru the microphones, as someone with misophonia i've been finding these runs really hard to watch lately for this reason
Well, not at that moment, but dozens of people played it beforehand. It's kind of like those old skater vcr tapes. "Hey. Look at when I did that trick perfectly?!" Nobody was skateboarding in front of the TV while the video was showing. (Actually, scratch that, I'd bet money there were skaters practicing their balance on the board while watching.)
this is a demonstration of tech that has been in the works for literal decades. the majority of tricks performed here aren’t possible by a human. the A Button Challenge (ABC) is designed for TAS to push the limits of what is possible in SM64. sometimes accomplishments aren’t impressive in their execution, but rather the technical knowledge of the medium required to verify that these feats are even possible in the first place.
Y'all need to broaden your idea of what "playing" is. You think the computer just... did this? No. They are programmed in, yes. Do you think the programmer isn't playing because their interface is code instead of a controller or keyboard?

Definitely, maybe we'll have a full run a-press challenge on actual hardware sometime
The legend himself!
it's meen nine years??? fml
Thanks pannen for getting me to love the ABC
I wish there was an input viewer for this. :(
Yeah a TAS without an input visualization is a lot less engaging.
It would probably be incomprehensible at certain parts, but yeah it would be cool
yea, i guess i dont get some of this because there is A LOT of jumping when they say there isnt...
that would be a great addition and probably not difficult to implement
genuinely you should send them feedback via email/socials or if they have a form

I was heartbroken to discover rolling rocks was down to 0 A presses, but I cannot believe A button challenge is at GDQ at all.
I still new it at .5 A-presses.
I mean, it was foretold to us years ago. You can’t say it’s an half press.
A lot of comments are saying "What's TAS" or "Nobody's Playing" so let me just leave it in a comment here instead of a reply

Since there are a lot of comments about whats TAS, I wonder if it means the speed run scene is growing as new people join :)
Thanks for watching everyone! There was a lot to go over here, so I'm glad we were able to showcase so many stars :)
great job big ted!
it’s big ted
Another legendary run by the famous speedrunner "TAS"
time for a scuttlebug jamboree
Hello again
Really cool stuff y'all. Can't wait to see the SM64 RTABC run at GDQ 2033
oh god
If they are willing to host an 86 hour run I'm willing to watch it
@@duster_bunt
90% of that probably just building speed.
This comment made me have a dream of me attempting amazing emergency exit 1xA at gdq and failing the speed reactivation so many times in a row that the run was just aborted before the first star was collected

Chisato cosplay, that’s definitely a winner in my book.
funny enough, my hat at the couch is LycoReco cafe by coincidence

incredible run!! i love learning about the a button challenge!! also love her outfit lol
They never finished explaining what does A-button challenge means, but from the context I think it's just no jumping

OMG that Chisato uniform is AWESOME
Thank you for the showcase :)
AGH thank you!!! I just missed this one, always so excited to see TAS showcases!
The A Button Challenge finally appears on GDQ. Unfortunately I wasn't able to see it live, but I'm glad it has happened.
I was really expecting something new to be showcased here, and while nothing here was new, this was still a fun watch.
Insane that we are seeing this challenge live at an event. I never thought I'd see it happen

This was great
Can’t wait to watch Mario build up speed for 18 hours!
It's been a long time for me with this game, but isn't the backflip at 8:11 a A-press?
that was just a dive recover, done with the B button and performed after pretty much every dive in this run; it’s also the most height Mario can get on his own with no outside help. it looks like it’s going backwards here because Mario was on a slope, which gave him negative speed, but the dive recover still functioned like normal despite the negative speed.

classic meme, from a simpler time
How are they doing the long-jumps all the time without A ?
For this showcase, they're only not pressing A for individual levels. They are pressing A to get around the castle to the different levels faster.

Who's playing? I don't understand hahaha
It's a TAS, so it's a saved series of inputs being replayed in real time
This is a TAS. They use a script of frame perfect inputs to demonstrate what would happen if you played 100% optimally
