The Clash was one of the biggest influences on the Punk rock era. They were intense, political & intelligent. Incredible pieces of music that will become part of your life. They are from London. They have a many other songs that you may want to listen to: London Calling, Know Your Rights, Rock the Casbah, etc. Lyrical geniuses, to boot! Thanks for sharing this one!

I always interpreted it as there’s trouble in the relationship. Some nights - if he stays over, they’re going to fight. But if he leaves to avoid the fight for the evening, she’ll be even madder. So he’s at a stalemate. And he’s wondering if the relationship is salvageable. So he wants her to tell let him know if he should stay or go.

    • @jambrunelda
      @jambrunelda 3 месяца назад +10

That is a good interpretation. I always picture the club scene and he arrives with a woman who then attaches herself to a different dude. If he leaves there will be trouble because any relationship is dead but if he stays, there might be a fight AND the relationship is still over. The great thing about songs is that they can mean different things to different people. 😄

@TheWiredpair it was crazy. 1st night, they moved me to the tunnel where the bands walk from dressing room to stage. The lead from the clash asked us if we would have a beer with him. Sadly, we weren't aloud. The bass play from the WHO knew my ex mother in law, his sister and her went to school together, she grew up in England, and he confirmed it. They told me i was filmed with some guy that was trying to pass me to get to the stage but a capt and officers took care of that, they tossed him out the back gate in a mud hole! 2nd night i was in the gated area where the smoke machines were right in the middle of the field. I never looked at the concert footage. It was a great time.

Joe Strummer's Spanish backing vocals reflect his global background. He was born John Graham Mellor on August 21, 1952, when his father, a diplomat, was stationed in Ankara, Turkey. After The Clash broke up Strummer had a couple acting roles and musical credits before forming the very experimental band the Mescaleros around the turn of the century.

The Clash were the second biggest punk band after the Sex Pistols. The Clash were much more interesting though. This one and "Rock The Casbah" were the most popular songs worldwide also thanks to MTV that aired the latter all the time. The Clash catalog is very heterogeneous and varied from punk to rock to reggae. They were very politically based, leaning to the extreme left, especially the singer Joe Strummer that often wore t-shirts glorifying European communist terrorist groups like german "RAF" or Italian "Brigate Rosse", both on stage and during photo sessions. Their most iconic songs, I think, are "London Calling" and "I fought the law", but I believe you should react to "Rock the Casbah" next.

Wikipedia-Rumours have arisen about the song's lyrical content, such as Jones' impending dismissal from the Clash or the tempestuous personal relationship between Jones and American singer Ellen Foley. "Should I Stay or Should I Go" was thought to be written by Jones about Foley, who sang the backing vocals on Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell. However, in 1991, Jones said: It wasn't about anybody specific and it wasn't pre-empting my leaving The Clash. It was just a good rockin' song, our attempt at writing a classic ... When we were just playing, that was the kind of thing we used to like to play

The Clash were a huge band in the late 70's and early 80's. They were much more than a Punk band. They incorporated Ska, Reggae, Rock, Rockabilly, Pop and put their own twist to it. They were very political, usually denouncing social inequality and greedy corporations. And yes, they had a few songs that had Spanish in them. They were unique and so many big bands of today such as U2, Green Day, Foo Fighters to name a few are all huge Clash fans. Their lead singer Joe Strummer passed away in 2002 unfortunately. He had a solid solo career after The Clash and one of his most successful project was Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros. A unique band well worth exploring.

The Clash were called: "punk" in the U.K., but in the U.S. they were, really, "an everyday, radio band." Effectively: "just a rock band."
(even with their deep Dub Reggae and other influences and world music styles-which they incorporated into their writing.)
    ...So: really: They crossed boundaries.
Punk Rock was not commercially accepted in the U.S. (and, thereby: worldwide, really), save for a very few artists (the Ramones, would be an example), until into the 1990s [and this because of: Nirvana's punk roots and love for it and the, later, co-opting of: Epitaph records bands and the rise of artists such as: Rancid
and Green Day (and many similar bands/hogglegaggers).]
This is one of THE CLASH's most popular songs
and this album, actually, deserves more credit than it gets.
Although it features the massive hits: "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"
    and "Rock The Casbah"
...it has truly excellent album tracks (such as the poignant: "Straight To Hell" -🔥🔥🔥🔥 PLEASE listen to that!!! You will be doing YOURSELF, and the REST of us A FAVOR!!
    🤘🤘 -A Solid!).
...but deapite that, it doesn't compare to their: "Ultra-Milestones":
    LONDON CALLING
or, even, their debut, self-titled album [The Clash (the "rawest" and "punkiest" of all their releases.)].
This song ("Should I Stay Or Should I Go") was. actually, covered by Living Colour (when they opened at the same stadium [Shea], for the Rolling Stones, nearly a decade later! -Living Colour often used the song in their stage set, actually. ...and that tour was when more people became aware of it!).
This album [Combat Rock] and the subsequent success of singles and the subsequent U.S. tour (opening for the (weak!) '80s reboot of The Who! - who: despite Keith Moon's early demise, weee6, still, a huge draw and developed a new commercial viability, in the early 1980s).
Those singles and that tour made worldwide rock stars out if The Clash.
... subsequently: the band crashed and burned, essentially.
    🤦😳
...the 2 "primaries": Vocalist/Guitarist: Joe Strummer
and: primary Guitarist/Vocalist: Mick Jones (NOT to be confused, unnecessarily, with the guitarist from: Foreigner!!🤦).
Jones took off and formed the first, commercially successful "sample incorporating," rock band (with a D.J. as a musician/stage member!) along with superb London D.J.: Don Letts.
Letts, also, became a filmmaker and made the excellent Clash documentary movie: Westway To The World (in later years)!
    - Sorry: "interrupting myself" 🙄🙄🙄🤦🤷:
Mick Jones and Don Letts formed the band:
    Big Audio Dynamite
(commonly referred to as: B.A.D. !🤘🤘)
B.A.D. re-formed in the 1990s (without Don Letts or any original members, excepting (co-founder): Mick Jones), as "B.A.D. II" ...and ended-up having a "club culture," '90s, pseudo-dance hit, with the song "Rush" (circa: 1992🤷).
The REAL Big Audio Dynamite gems are things like:
    "E=MC²";
"The Medicine Show" (using the term "Medicine," here as it is recognized to be used & is used in Native American spirituality and parlance.)
    and
    "The Bottom Line"
    (off of: Big Audio Dynamite)
    or
    "C'mon Every Beatbox"
    or "Sightsee M.C."
(off of: No. 10 Upping St.)
    ...or: "Tighten-Up, Vol. 88"
    , for example.
Joe Strummer (eventually) formed: Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros! [🔥🔥🔥🔥].
Strummer recorded 3 albums with The Mescaleros (before his untimely death in 2002 😭😭😭😭👎....) and toured RELENTLESSLY!! 🤘🤘🔥
    They produced
    some legendary cuts, such as:
    "Tony Adams"; "Yalla Yalla";
    "Global A-Go-Go"; "Bindi Baghee"
...&, just, SUPERBLY cool, bad-ass tracks overall!! 🤘🤘🔥
Their concerts were A CELEBRATION! 💙💙💙💙💜

The Clash are what I think of when the word PUNK rock is used. They were one of the originals, along with the Sex Pistols and some others. The band was part of the punk scene of the late 70's/early 80's. Their music did make it to mainstream while others didn't and some would call them out for selling out. But this band stayed true to their punk roots. Check out - "London Calling", "I'm So Bored with the U.S.A", "Career Opportunities", "Rock the Casbah". The Clash and punk rock in general were anti-establishment and sang a lot about politics. Great stuff!

Mos Def sampled The Clash’s “MAGNIFICENT SEVEN”, a MUST hear song. Straight NYC Dance Floor BANGER; the extended version is The Magnificent Dance. Another must hear: “ROCK THE CASBAH” it was 🔥 in the Ckubs AND on the rock stations. Quite relevant today, too!

The clash is one of my favourite bands and there's not many I can say is my all time favourites. My favourite songs are train in vain, clampdown, death or glory, magnificent seven, rock the casbah, remote control.... Unfortunately the band weren't together for a long time, so they never made many albums but their albums are masterpieces.

I was about 14 or so when this song popped, but looking back at these reactions, I was so clueless! I must’ve heard this song hundreds of times, I’ve seen the video, and I never realized that the backing was in Spanish! How did I miss this stuff?!?

lucky enough to have seen joe strummer just when I was discovering the CLash in late 90's at glastonbury. One of my fav bands still ... I was late 70s kid so never saw them in their prime. Strummer was jut gettting his groover on again and was looking forward to seeing them more, or him at least, but sadly life cur short early. one of my first musical heroes to pass away
LOST IN THE SUPERMARKET is one of absolute favourite forms of art, not just song or music!

You can’t go wrong with any song from their 1979 double album “London Calling”. I’m a big fan of the songs “Death or Glory”, “Brand New Cadillac”, “Clampdown” and “Wrong ‘Em Boyo”. Also the song “This is Radio Clash”

The Clash's 1982 song "Should I Stay or Should I Go" is about nothing specific, according to the song's writer, Mick Jones. Jones has said that the song is "just a good rockin' song, our attempt at writing a classic". The song was featured on the band's Combat Rock album and became their most popular single. In 1991, Levi's used the song in a commercial, which led to the band re-releasing it and reaching number one in England. Rolling Stone ranked the song 228 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

You should have a listen to the UK's first punk band from the 70's, The Damned. You could go for the very first UK Punk single, New Rose, the classic Smash It Up, or something totally different, the 80's hit Eloise 😉

Further down the rabbit hole is lead singer Mick Jones’ later band, Big Audio Dynamite. There’s been a few incarnations over the years with band members being replaced. Some songs you can try are “The Bottom Line”’ “Rush”, “The Globe”, “Innocent Child”, “C’mon Every Beatbox”, “Contact”. Enjoy your trip!

The Spanish background vocals were due to Joe trying to mess with Mick during the recording. The engineer was from Honduras, if i remember right, and Joe asked him to translate the vocals into Spanish. They then snuck up on Mick to surprise him, which is why he said "Split!"

More Clash please!! Might be worth looking at 'The Magnificient Seven' as it's considered by some to be the first Hip Hop influenced song to hit the mainstream. The Clash spent a lot of time in New York around that time and wanted to try and incorporate that style and culture into their music.

Next should be "Rock the Casbah" i think, but "Guns of Brixton", "London Calling", "Know Your Rights", "I Fought the Law", and "Magnificent Seven" also need to be on the shortlist for reactions.
